Updates with Spaceport America: No more international student competition and still no Virgin Galactic flights
Feb. 16—New Mexico's Spaceport America touts itself as the gateway to space, but after losing out on hosting a major collegiate rocket engineering competition and no launches from Virgin Galactic since June, are operations up in the air?
Spaceport America Executive Director Scott McLaughlin says no. He's in talks with future tenants and doesn't anticipate any delays with Virgin Galactic's plan to resume commercial launches next year.
He admitted he is sad to see the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition, or IREC, leave Spaceport. The competition attracts student rocketry teams from around the world. Spaceport has hosted IREC since 2017 and even played a role in rebranding the competition as the Spaceport America Cup.
But this year, Spaceport won't be the venue for the competition; it'll be in Midland, Texas. The decision was spurred by the need for a larger competition venue and higher flights, McLaughlin said.
"We hate to lose the visibility and the introduction to New Mexico that the students got by being part of the IREC and coming to Spaceport America," McLaughlin said.
Federal operations played a part in IREC moving away from the Spaceport, as the launch pad uses the restricted airspace of the White Sands Missile Range, McLaughlin said. He explained that the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association, which operates IREC, was looking at flights up to 100 kilometers — meaning "a rocket could conceivably go downwind and land on White Sands Missile Range, as opposed to our property or nearby our property."
Spaceport has other forms of visibility, like through its anchor tenant Virgin Galactic and having the U.S. Thunderbirds practice there, McLaughlin said.
Not hosting IREC will also probably make Virgin Galactic's plans for flying twice a week smoother, McLaughlin said.
"That in of itself, might be somewhat incompatible with the IREC because we can't have rockets launching at the same time we have Virgin Galactic flying passengers to space," he said.
As for Virgin Galactic's presence at Spaceport, it's been pretty quiet — as expected.
The space tourism company in late 2023 announced it planned to scale back and eventually pause flights from Spaceport, after major net losses and layoffs that year.
Sierra County resident Dan Warren isn't very confident in Virgin Galactic's operations at Spaceport, especially when it comes to how much it supports the local economy. He told the Journal despite thousands of space tourists being promised, only a couple dozen have actually launched from Spaceport, "and now operations have been paused for at least another year and probably two years or more."
"As a long-time resident of Sierra County, I'm disappointed that the promised space tourism from 20 years ago has never come to fruition," he said.
Warren brought up a recent Motley Fool article questioning if it would be more financially promising for Virgin Galactic to fly cargo, like research projects, instead of passengers. The space company's stock has been on a downward spiral for years, sitting at a low of around $4.04 on Wednesday.
Virgin Galactic didn't respond to multiple requests for comment.
But McLaughlin said everything is on track for Virgin Galactic to come back to Spaceport sometime later this year. The company has said it'll resume commercial flights in 2026 with its new Delta class ships.
Plans are still in the works at Spaceport with tenants other than Virgin Galactic. McLaughlin said he's in talks with future tenants, though he couldn't name specific companies due to nondisclosure agreements.
Not having IREC could be a benefit to some potential tenants, like one company thinking about installations at the Vertical Launch Area that didn't want student rocket competition activity that close by, McLaughlin said.
Spaceport is also working on a 40-year lease with the State Land Office. McLaughlin said some tenants at Spaceport's horizontal launch area want to sign long-term agreements. The current base lease has another seven or eight years on it, he added.
He said Virgin Galactic is one of the tenants looking for a longer lease of at least 20 years.
"We're staying busy," McLaughlin said. "We have lots of customers, so we're staying busy trying to get ready for Virgin Galactic coming back sometime later this year."

Opinion - It's Kamala Harris's nomination to lose in 2028 — and she's already losing it
Maybe the Democratic insiders in Washington were right about Kamala Harris. Despite a wealth of advantages, Harris and her team don't seem to know what to do next. Her reappearance in the public has been rather unremarkable, rehashing Democratic tropes about Donald Trump along with the expected policy bromides. That's just not going to cut it. From the outside, it is astonishing how quickly the political cognoscenti have dismissed the former vice president. There should be no question about her being the leader of the Democratic Party, and she's an obvious front-runner for the 2028 nomination. Harris got more than 75 million votes in 2024 with 95 percent of Democrats voting for her, according to the exit polls. In a party still mired in identity politics, Harris checks more boxes than any other putative Democratic candidate. She remains popular as well, with the most recent YouGov poll showing Harris at 87 percent favorable against 9 percent unfavorable with Democrats. The McLaughlin poll has Harris at 88 percent favorable against 10 percent unfavorable. But the cracks start to show with her ballot tests versus other Democratic hopefuls. The most recent polling by McLaughlin has Harris with just 30 percent of Democratic primary voters, while Echelon Insights has her at 32 percent. She remains far ahead of any rivals, leading second-place Pete Buttigieg by 22 points in the Echelon poll and Gavin Newsom by 22 points in McLaughlin. As long as Harris is in the mix, she is likely to lead all Democrats just based on name recognition. If she does run in the next election, she will lead in all national polls until the first Democratic primary contest. But can she actually win the nomination once she has to get votes on her own? Her first run in 2020 ended rather ignominiously and the 2024 nominating contest involved not much more than a spate of phone calls and allowing the weight of being the incumbent vice president to crush any potential opposition. The last few months are showing why the D.C. establishment was extraordinarily unimpressed during her veep tryout. The return of Harris has been, at best, desultory. Her first major address was a ChatGPT-inspired cataloguing of Democratic complaints about President Trump and perfunctory praise for her grandstanding potential rivals. Her follow-up was a private address to Australian real estate agents. Who is scheduling this nonsense? This tentative, scattershot rollout shows the fundamental problem with Harris and her team: They lack any strategic vision, and Harris herself seems petrified of angering or even slightly annoying anyone in her fractious party. She lacks confidence, and what charisma she has is definitely low wattage. Her polling numbers, identity qualifications (as a non-white woman) and former vice presidential status should be intimidating to other Democrats, but nobody is afraid of Kamala. Her flirtation with running for California governor in 2026 is not helping, since that would end her presidential ambitions. She cannot run for governor in 2026 and president in 2028. Between the bad timing, the unfortunate Nixon comparisons and the immediately violation of the pledge not to run for president that she would have to make on the gubernatorial campaign trail, it's just not feasible. That puts Harris in the mix for 2032 at the earliest. If a Democrat wins in 2028, Harris will be staring at 2036 — 72 years old and likely needing to knock out an incumbent vice president and whoever else jumps in. To make matters more difficult, California is a mess policy-wise, fiscally and politically. It is hard to believe that Harris can make a dent in the state's myriad problems. Plus, the politics of the state are far to the left of the rest of the country, meaning her own politics will necessarily be drawn in that direction in order to get anything done. Harris should re-emerge aggressively — not just attacking Trump, but presenting at least a skeleton of ideas for the future. She should have a real theme. The term 'opportunity economy' that she used in 2024 wasn't great, but it is serviceable. She could be riding that. And she should absolutely ignore all other potential rivals, with the idea that they are politically beneath her. Harris is the leader — Buttigieg, Cory Booker, J.B. Pritzker and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez can be helpful to her. But the most important task for Harris is to escape culpability for Trump 2.0 by pinning the blame on Team Biden for losing. That doesn't mean attacking Joe — after all, he is a sick, confused old man, taken advantage of by his dissolute son and scheming inner circle. Given the revelations in the recent books 'Fight' and 'Original Sin,' this task should be easy. It is a challenging weave, but not too difficult for a decently competent politician. Given the reporting, the best line she can deliver is that Biden's inner circle only did two things well: hide former President Joe Biden's mental infirmity and get Trump elected. In a Democratic Party where the grassroots are as hostile to the establishment as the Republican grassroots, that line is a sure crowd-pleaser. Harris has to establish herself independently. She has to take some risks bashing the Democratic insider. They never were on her side when she was vice president, so she doesn't really have much to lose. The bottom line for Harris is that the 2028 nomination is not going to be handed to her. She is going to have to work for it and show she has the political chops to run for president on her own. That cannot be done trying to be all things to all people. Harris has all the advantages, but she is showing she doesn't know what to do with them. 'I take that personally': Scott McLaughlin unashamedly defends Roger Penske after scandal
INDIANAPOLIS — Vulnerability isn't a natural strong suit for most men. But on Thursday at Indianapolis 500 media day, driver Scott McLaughlin didn't stifle his emotions when discussing the recent firings of three critical Team Penske strategists following the team's violation for a modified attenuator prior to Fast 12 qualifying. 'It's frustrating that this has blown up as it has, and it's cost three people that I'm very close with their jobs,' McLaughlin said. Although McLaughlin called the firings 'sad,' the 2021 NTT IndyCar Series and Indy 500 Rookie of the Year said he respects team owner Roger Penske's decision to fire team president Tim Cindric, managing director Ron Ruzewski and general manager Kyle Moyer. After telling the media that he "won't speak too much more" about the Penske violations and firings following the first question, McLaughlin later addressed the issue again and defended Penske. 'I'm disappointed with how Roger's name is being thrown through the mud (and) his integrity,' McLaughlin said. 'Our team, the people on the floor, the people that spend hours away from their families trying to build these cars and basically being thrown to the mud. I take that personally.' McLaughlin believes the scandal is being 'taken out of proportion' and fears people may forget what Penske has done for the sport. Penske owns IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway along with his decorated team. Ben Bretzman will replace Moyer as McLaughlin's strategist on race day. McLaughlin called Bretzman his 'best friend' and said he's excited to work closer with him. Communication won't be difficult for the two as Bretzman manages the timing stand for McLaughlin on test days. If that wasn't enough experience, their time playing video games together has already built enough chemistry. 'We've got amazing people coming in from a substitute perspective and helping us out,' McLaughlin said. 'A real pity': Will Power recalls week of Team Penske violations, staff firings before Indy 500 After a week filled with turmoil and an unfortunate crash in practice Sunday, McLaughlin's focus faces in one direction. 'Overall, my view is just to focus forward and win Roger (Penske) his 21st (Indianapolis 500),' McLaughlin said. 'And I tell you what, there is that much motivation within the team (and) within my stand.'
