Underground cables delay Pandan Indah bridge works

A TRAFFIC dispersal project involving the construction of two vehicular bridges at Pandan Indah in Ampang, Selangor is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) said the project completion date was extended following the discovery of underground utility and telecommunication cables.
Upgrading and construction works include the building of the bridges over Sungai Kerayong, piling and traffic light upgrades.
MPAJ deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari said the project that started in August last year was 50% completed.
'There were many utility pipes and cables that needed to be relocated before the construction could proceed, which resulted in a three-month extension.
Hasrolnizam says traffic management measures are being implemented at the site.
'However, there are no full road closures in the area.
'To ensure safety and smooth progress of construction, traffic management measures including possible diversions, are being implemented at the site.'
Hasrolnizam said MPAJ, in collaboration with the state government, aimed to reduce congestion at the busy intersection.
StarMetro previously reported that the current traffic level of service (LOS) was grade F, but was expected to improve to grade D once the RM9.3mil project was completed.
LOS refers to traffic flow designated by letter grades from A (free flow) to F (near gridlock).

A 100m stretch of Jalan Pandan Utama will have a lane share system during the construction period.
Alternative routes include Jalan Pandan Muhibbah, Jalan Bunga Mawar 4 and Jalan Pandan Mewah.

The law graduate from Universiti Teknologi Mara Melaka makes RM200 to RM300 a day selling pre-loved clothes. 'I used to donate my clothes for recycling but after seeing friends selling pre-loved items, I started selling mine as well,' she said. Dayana sells from her car in the outdoor carpark of the business square Bistari De Kota along Jalan Teknologi 3/9 in Kota Damansara. The venue has been the spot for weekly car boot sales since 2013. It got a boost after being chosen to host celebrations marking 19 years since Petaling Jaya gained city status. Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin launched the celebrations, marking the start of 31 activities organised by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) under the theme 'Petaling Jaya Bandar Paling Bahagia'. The activities, including community programmes and competitions, are being held throughout June. Accompanying the Tengku Permaisuri in visiting the booths were Selangor Women's Welfare and Charity Organisation (Pekawanis) president Datin Seri Masdiana Muhamad and Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon. Mohamad Zahri said several other initiatives were kicked off during the anniversary celebrations launch. These included 'Food With Love', a new care economy programme organised by MBPJ. 'The project will see halal meals prepared at a central kitchen run by a non-governmental organisation (NGO). 'The meals will be distributed to eligible senior citizens and disabled individuals who register under MBPJ's guidelines,' he said. Mohamad Zahri highlighted that MBPJ was the first local council to introduce a senior citizens' guideline − the Senior Citizen Action Plan 2030 − to address the needs of a growing ageing population. He added that MBPJ was also the first local council in Malaysia to have set up a children's council. Mohamad Zahri said the anniversary theme was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Malaysia Madani and the First Selangor Plan. 'MBPJ has offered free training programmes since 2022. 'More than 5,000 business owners have participated in courses covering marketing, AI tools, and banking,' he said. The mayor said MBPJ had also been sending the top 10 participants for overseas educational trips annually. 'Past destinations have included Bandung, Bangkok and Vietnam. China may be the destination for this year,' he said. At the launch, Malaysia Book of Records held a presentation to recognise MBPJ for having played a leading role in setting up the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza. The three-floor recycling centre in Sungai Way Free Trade Industrial Zone was set up in collaboration with seven NGOs and professional bodies. The Eco Recycling Plaza has been officially recognised by Malaysia Book of Records as the country's first excellent-rated centre of environmental sustainability managed by a local authority.

Desecration risks in rezoning Vivekananda Ashram
The status of Vivekananda Ashram in Brickfields has changed from mixed development to main commercial in successive Kuala Lumpur local plans. — Filepic A NATIONAL heritage group has raised concerns over the rezoning of the century-old Vivekananda Ashram in Brickfields under the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (KLLP 2040). Badan Warisan Malaysia (BWM) president Lim Wei-Ling said the ashram building was 'at real risk of being desecrated'. 'Gazetted in 2016, it is an important heritage building of historical and cultural significance, together with the site on which it sits in Brickfields. 'The rezoning and classification also pose an alarming risk of not having a sufficient buffer zone around the building. 'While we agree on the need for development, this should happen within reason and land around heritage sites should not be prone to overdevelopment,' she said in a media statement. Lim was responding to a StarMetro report on May 26, 'Vivekananda Ashram at a crossroads' where stakeholders highlighted an inconsistency in the revised draft of the KLLP 2040. While the ashram is classified as a Category 1 Heritage Building under the National Heritage Act 2005, the 0.4ha site is now zoned as 'main commercial', raising concerns that it could be overshadowed by future development. In the earlier draft of KLLP 2020, the land surrounding the ashram was designated for facilities, utilities and infrastructure within a heritage zone. By the time the KLLP 2020 plan was gazetted, the zoning had changed to 'mixed development'. Lim also expressed support for stronger provisions in the KLLP 2040 to protect heritage sites from development. 'Sites like Vivekananda Ashram, which are surrounded by skyscrapers, are in jeopardy of being lost and demolished within Kuala Lumpur. 'These small and meaningful heritage sites are part of the diverse historical references that define Kuala Lumpur. 'They should be celebrated and protected as part of Warisan Kuala Lumpur, an initiative launched recently by our Prime Minister,' said Lim. She stressed that authorities should offer greater protection to heritage buildings and sites in support of that vision. When contacted, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said in the case of the ashram, 'if a proposal is submitted and follows the local plan, we can look into the sensitive design around the site.' 'There are mechanisms in place to protect the heritage building,' she said. On concerns that stakeholder input was not considered in the amended KLLP 2040, Maimunah said that when she assumed office in August, the local plan study was already nearing completion after public participation. 'The committee presented me with the outcomes and proposed amendments in October. 'Proposals that align with the plan will be approved while those that do not, will be rejected,' she said.

MBI needs RM4.25mil to complete roof project for Gerbang Malam night market
At Ipoh's Gerbang Malam night market, 185m has roofing while funding is needed to complete the project. — RONNIE CHIN/The Star THE second phase of roof construction for Gerbang Malam along Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar is 85% complete, says Ipoh mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah. He said the roof had been designed with adequate height clearance to avoid obstructing nearby commercial units and shoplots. 'The city council is committed to conducting an immediate survey of the night market site, to assess the current situation and ensure the needs of traders and visitors are taken into account in further planning,' he said. It was previously reported that traders at the site had complained that part of the roof had yet to be put up, causing them to lose business during the rainy season. Zamakhshari said the roof design would address this issue. The first phase of the project, which involved building the roof over 185m of the night market area, was completed in April 2023 at a cost of RM2.9mil, with RM2.6mil coming from the Federal Government and an additional RM300,000 from the city council. 'Work on the second phase began on Oct 14 last year,' said Zamakhshari. He noted that another 171m-long stretch was still without a roof, due to funding constraints. He said MBI had submitted a RM4.25mil funding request to the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture for the implementation of Phase 3. 'It includes the construction of additional roofing, the installation of industrial fans and improvements to pedestrian walkways. 'We will continue working to secure additional funds to complete the project for the well-being of traders and the comfort of visitors.' He said MBI was optimistic the request would be approved, adding that 'MBI is committed to overseeing this project comprehensively.' Zamakhshari said MBI was focused on prioritising traders' welfare, enhancing Gerbang Malam's image as a tourist attraction and ensuring that every development project would benefit Ipoh residents. 'MBI deeply appreciates the patience and support of all parties in our efforts to build a more progressive and prosperous city,' he said. Gerbang Malam is one of Ipoh's key tourist attractions where small and medium-sized traders operate daily from 6pm to midnight.
