Britain's most elite pooches are strutting their stuff as the annual Crufts dog show gets underway in Birmingham. Thousands of canines and their owners are expected for the contest, which is now in its 134th year.
Founded in 1891 by Charles Cruft, a former worker at a dog biscuit company, the event gradually outgrew its former home at London's Royal Agricultural Hall, relocating to the West Midlands to mark its centenary year.
Now run by the Kennel Club the competition bills itself as "recognising the significant impact that our faithful companions have on our lives and the encouragement they provide during challenging times".
Its enduring success highlights just how much the country is a nation of dog lovers, with more than half of Brits describing themselves as 'very comfortable' around dogs.

Skip to main content Current eater city: Dallas It's fair to wonder how the heck the team who runs Rye — a highly experimental restaurant in Dallas known for its take on the Icelandic hot dog, a tasting menu that features kangaroo tartare, and a Michelin Award for it's Outstanding Cocktail Program — ended up opening a restaurant outside a Hilton Hotel in Plano, a mere stone's throw away from the IKEA in Frisco. It turns out that Boardwalk at Granite Park, a waterfront dining destination, approached Rye's owners to put a restaurant into one of their office buildings, co-owner Tanner Agar tells Eater Dallas. But rather than recreate Rye, Agar and chef-owner Taylor Rause looked to Spain and Portugal for influences for their new restaurant Flamant, which opened on Tuesday, June 10. Agar's personal connection to the country, having worked at Michelin-starred Simply Fosh in Spain in 2013, made him passionate about the idea. Since Rye serves small plates, the duo chose not to open a tapas spot, Agar says, and instead worked on an idea that would showcase their flair for the unexpected and utilize open-flame cooking. 'When we opened Rye years ago, originally in McKinney, one of the principles we pitched to investors was that we think a lot of people move to the suburbs because they want to have a free-standing house and be in a good school district,' Agar says. 'However, they're coming from Dallas, New York, L.A., and Chicago. They're looking around saying, 'I'm tired of all these restaurant chains that don't think I'm smart or sophisticated. I wish there was something for me.'' At Flamant, diners can find dishes like the highly Instagrammable scallop crudo, served in a dressing that incorporates spirulina to give it a blue hue. The scallops, along with herbs and tepin chiles from Portugal, look like they're swimming in an ocean. There is Faux Gras served in a hinge-topped glass jar, made from cashews, preserved lemons, and brandy, accompanied by lacto-fermented blackberry jam to be spread on wood-fired bread. It tastes a bit like foie gras and a bit like a decadent cashew butter and jelly sandwich. The muhammara, a spread of red pepper and walnuts combined with olive oil and salt, is inspired by Rause's days cooking Lebanese food at Sitti in Raleigh, North Carolina. In the end, the menu does have a small plate selection, ideal for diners who want to order a leisurely meal that might include tinned fish, caviar service, or a charcuterie board focused on Spanish, Italian, and French meats. For those who want to have three or four courses, however, there are soups and salads, and, for the first time any any of Agar and Rause's restaurants, a burger and a chicken sandwich. 'A friend of mine said, 'Man, you spent seven years working on this burger recipe, huh? I hope it's good,' Agar jokes. In reality, the burger is designed to cater to nearby office workers who want to stop in for a quick lunch. There are also large entrées, such as the ragu bianco, which omits the tomatoes, allowing the pork, celery, carrots, and various herbs to come together in a powerful, herbaceous sauce. All of the protein-based entrees, which include chicken thighs with roasted vegetables, mussels and chorizo, ocean trout with farro and local greens, and a wagyu ribeye with a smoked sugar rub and beurre rouge, are cooked over the open fire grill in the kitchen. 'We talked for months about how people have to pass multiple other restaurants to get to us here, and how we could create a place that feels exciting and special,' Agar says. 'Live fire cooking is something you could technically do at your house, but you're probably not going to spend an hour arranging the coals or wood to do it right.' Equally exciting is the cocktail menu. Diners should try one of the simplest drinks on the menu to better understand Portuguese culture: The Porto Tonico, made with white port and tonic water. It is the Aperol spritz or ranch water of the country — available everywhere you go, thanks to its light ingredient list, and a default drink that is light and refreshing with a low ABV. Or taste the darker side of summer with a glass of Black Sangria, made with black currant, pomegranate, balsamic, Lambrusco, and Flamant brandy. 'It is a private brandy we brewed in Denison, using Texas grapes that have been distilled by Ironroot Republic and blended with cognac and armagnac to get the flavor profile we are going for.' Sadly, the vines used for the brandy have been destroyed, says Agar, so this is an extremely limited edition product. Flamant is adding THC drinks to its menu, while it is still legal in the state, which is another first for Agar and Rause. For their first foray into selling THC-infused drinks, they're sticking to the cans from Dallas-based Cali Sober, although Agar says they may toy with making their own THC-infused drinks if these products don't become prohibited to sell in Texas. 'Friends of mine who sell these THC drinks at their restaurants said they do really well for them, and they don't have any problems with the guests… I've been in this business for a long time, and I never have rowdy, violent guests who've been smoking weed. Only the ones who've been drinking too much.' Flamant has a brunch menu to explore with one notable difference from most brunch services in DFW: It's $40 per person for endless plates. A few dishes from the lunch and dinner menus are available, alongside a croquette scramble, croissant Benedict, cannoli French toast, patatas bravas with avocados, and more. The purpose, Agar says, is to try as many things as possible, share them, and be in community while eating. Netflix just added a new dystopian drama — and it's already 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

When looking through everything new on Netflix this week, one of the shows that caught my eye was "Families like Ours." This Danish dystopian drama miniseries comes from the mind of Academy Award-nominated director Thomas Vinterberg ("Another Round"), who wrote and directed all seven episodes. The show is set in a near-future Denmark where rising sea levels have caused the Danes to abandon their homeland. But while the impending doom of the story certainly plays a role, the show is more focused on how the mass exodus impacts those forced to leave — and those who choose to stay behind. While the drama series is new to Netflix this week, it debuted at the Venice International Film Festival last year and then first aired in its native Denmark later that same year. That means we already have some critical reviews, and they're so far very positive — a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. So here's everything you need to know about "Families like Ours," and why it needs to be the show you start binge-watching right now. As I already mentioned, "Families Like Ours" is set in a near-future world where rising sea levels force the Danish government to announce a mass evacuation. This decision causes a catastrophic domino effect. Property becomes worthless, which tanks the wealth of the Danish people. Those who still have wealth can sometimes secure their evacuations to the countries of their choosing, but others must take part in a government-funded relocation process that can tear families apart. One such family is Laura's (Amaryllis August), whose family is being torn apart as her mother (Paprika Steen) goes to one place, her father (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) to another and her boyfriend, Elías (Albert Rudbeck Lindhardt), goes to yet another location. Now Laura has to choose which path she'll take for herself. There aren't a ton of critics' reviews for "Families like Ours" yet, but those that have come in are all positive, albeit while highlighting some of the show's shortcomings. "Fascinating and infuriating in equal measure and ultimately oddly moving, for all its flaws," wrote Keith Watson for The Telegraph (UK). "'Families Like Ours' pulls you into its emotional slipstream and won't let go." Lucy Mangan had a similarly positive review, with some caveats. "There is much to admire," she wrote. "It doesn't preach, it does have the themes work through the characters instead of the other way round (and has a cast stuffed with Danish heavyweights to help it). But it all feels a bit thin, a bit bloodless – like a thought experiment made flesh rather than a compelling, provocative drama." By all accounts, "Families like Ours" won't suddenly become the next "Adolescence" for Netflix. But it also seems like everyone who has watched it has given it a positive review. Even better, as a seven-part miniseries, you're getting a complete story that you could finish over a week or even on a lazy weekend day. So, yes, go ahead and hit play on this Danish drama next time you log onto the streaming service. It definitely seems to be worth a watch. There's no denying that Dawn French's video about Israel was mind-bogglingly crass. In particular the bit when she put on a silly, babyish voice and referred to the October 7 massacre as 'a bad fing'. Even so, let's not be too hard on her. In time, I believe, we may end up owing her our deepest gratitude. Because, thanks to the sheer, blistering ferocity of the backlash she's received, other mush-brained luvvies may finally take the hint – and stop inflicting their witless political views on the rest of us. To be clear: I'm not suggesting that these people deserve to be cancelled for their opinions. Cancel culture is a blight on our age, and famous actors have got just as much right to free speech as anyone else. The problem is that, all too often, what they say is so cluelessly conformist. It's obvious that they're only passing comment because they think trotting out the fashionable line on a given topic – Israel, gender identity, net zero or whatever – will make them look good. With any luck, therefore, Ms French's experience will deter them from expressing a view on such issues until they've bothered to give them some actual thought. And if that sounds too much like hard work, and they'd prefer not to say anything, that's absolutely fine. Why on earth should we expect actors to have intelligent opinions on current affairs, anyway? Their day job is to recite words that have been written for them by other, much smarter people. It doesn't require them to think. So you might as well seek geopolitical analysis from a performing seal, or a parrot. Ms French, however, seems to have believed she had some kind of duty to air her criticisms of Israel's military strategy. In a subsequent statement apologising for her 'tone', she wrote: 'I have felt my silence is complicit or even somehow sanctioning.' Allow me to put her mind at ease. Dear Ms French, I promise you: your previous 'silence' was not responsible for a single death in the Middle East. Even if you'd published your video months ago, Benjamin Netanyahu would not have said, 'Stand down, everyone – I'm ordering an immediate ceasefire. Look, I know we want to defeat Hamas and save the hostages. But, as a nation, we simply can't afford to incur the wrath of that woman from The Vicar of Dibley.' So please, dear Dawn, try not to feel guilty. In fact, be proud. Because if your calamitous own goal does indeed prompt other celebrities to abandon their narcissistic virtue-signalling, it will be the greatest contribution to human happiness you'll ever make.
