As the Strike at Villa Columbo Approaches One Month, Community Groups Rally in Support of CUPE 5525

Business Wire5 days ago

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As workers at the Villa Columbo Supportive Housing Unit in North York are approaching one month on the picket lines, community organizations and their union are showing up to support them. Management at Villa Columbo, a subsidiary of Villa Charities, walked away from the bargaining table one month ago, after tabling a proposal full of concessions and a payment package well below the poverty line. Villa Columbo has since hired strike breakers, also known as scabs, and is refusing to return to good-faith negotiations with the Union. These 25 personal care workers have been marching ever since, filling the neighbourhood with chants and bullhorns.
On Tuesday, June 24 th, the members of CUPE 5525 will be joined by CUPE National President, Mark Hancock, and National Secretary Treasurer, Candace Rennick, as well as members of Anakbayan, a Filipino youth organization that supports social and economic justice causes in North York and Migrante, Ontario.
'Scab labour is a despicable, immoral tactic used by unscrupulous employers to try to break unions,' said Mark Hancock, National President of CUPE. 'Villa Columbo thinks it can bully these 25 women into accepting poor pay and bad working conditions. We're here to tell them that these workers aren't alone – they have the support of over 755,000 CUPE members across the country.'
'These women deserve the basic respect to have a living wage,' added Candace Renick, National Secretary Treasurer for CUPE. 'This community, and all of CUPE will keep standing beside them until Villa Columbo and Villa Charities gets back to the table.'

Tordillos declares victory in San Jose District 3 special election to fill disgraced former councilman's seat

(KRON) — San Jose Planning Commission Chair Anthony Tordillos has declared victory in the special election to fill the seat vacated by disgraced former San Jose City Councilman Omar Torres. Tordillos, who is also a software engineer, declared a 'landslide victory' in the San Jose City Council District 3 special election. As of Thursday, Tordillos is leading his opponent with nearly 65% of the vote. Tordillos will be the first ever Filipino member of the San Jose City Council and only the third LGBTQ+ member of the council. The San Jose Mercury News said that 'the current results reflect a meteoric rise for Tordillos, who entered the race as a dark horse candidate against a crowded field with significantly more political experience and connections.' Musk reportedly fires Tesla head of operations Omead Afshar 'District 3 voters showed they won't settle for status quo San Jose politics. They're tired of the same old fights between 'business' and 'labor' — they want a councilmember they can count on to deliver results on housing affordability, homelessness, and public safety,' Tordillos said. 'We were never supposed to make it this far, but thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who knocked on over 30,000 doors, we're here.' Tordillos' opponent, Gabby Chavez-Lopez, conceded the race with a message to supporters in which she bizarrely referred to him as 'Anthony Trujillo.' While Chavez-Lopez admitted the results weren't what she hoped for, she said she was 'incredibly proud of the campaign we ran.' Chavez-Lopez, a nonprofit executive, also highlighted what she called 'unprecedented levels of misinformation and negative attacks from outside special interest groups,' naming the California Association of Realtors and conservatize news outlet, BizPAC. Tordillos, who was endorsed by the Santa Clara County Democratic Party, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, and former Assemblymember Evan Low, among others, will assume the San Jose District 3 seat, representing much of downtown San Jose. The seat was last held by Omar Torres, who resigned in disgrace last year and was convicted earlier this year for sexually molesting a minor in 1999. The San Jose Registrar of Voters has not officially called the election in Tordillos' favor. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. CUPE Ontario Leaders Pledge Solidarity With York Region Paramedic Fired for Her Support for Anti-War Rally

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Leaders of Ontario's largest union have unanimously condemned the firing of one of their fellow executive board members, vowing to support the dedicated frontline paramedic who spoke out on social media in favour of an anti-war rally in Toronto. Board members have also called for her full reinstatement by York Region. A Facebook comment by CUPE Local 4900 member Katherine Grzejszczak included criticisms of Israel's genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. On June 20 she was fired by York Region Paramedic Services management, after being questioned about the comment. 'Katherine is a strong, brave and principled CUPE member who was elected democratically by fellow CUPE Ontario members to be a leader in our union. She is also someone whose life's work is saving others from harm, and yet she's being punished for using her voice to oppose the mass harm of others,' said CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn. CUPE Ontario's executive board was unequivocal that this discriminatory treatment of a CUPE member is an affront to every worker who believes in the right to speak out for peace and justice, or on any matter of conscience. Executive members also pledged their support for efforts to overturn the termination. 'To dedicate your professional life to emergency response and preserving life, and then to be fired for giving voice to opposition to an ongoing genocide, exposes chilling contradictions,' said CUPE Ontario Secretary-Treasurer Yolanda McClean. 'It's the inconsistent position of York Region Paramedic Services that makes no sense.' 'As outraged as we are about Katherine's unjust termination, this dangerous situation has broader impacts,' said Hahn. 'No employer should be able to silence any worker for challenging injustice.' 'This is about the Charter right of workers, as persons of conscience, to speak out against genocide and war. Katherine's comment on Facebook aligns completely with CUPE Ontario's longstanding, democratically decided anti-war principles.' MU:cj/cope491

CUPE National President Mark Hancock to Join WSIB Picket Line in Ottawa

OTTAWA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mark Hancock, National President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will join striking Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) workers on the picket line outside 1580 Merivale Road, Unit 500 in Ottawa on Thursday, June 26, between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. ET. Hancock's visit comes as more than 3,600 WSIB frontline staff continue a province-wide strike that has now stretched beyond two months — the first strike in the organization's 110-year history. The picket will take place in front of the constituency office of Ottawa West–Nepean MPP Chandra Pasma, as part of a broader effort to raise public and political awareness of the urgent need for leadership from WSIB decision-makers. Where: 1580 Merivale Road, Unit 500 (MPP Chandra Pasma's constituency office) Time Between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. 'We're grateful to have CUPE National President Mark Hancock join us in Ottawa,' said Harry Goslin, President of the Ontario Compensation Employees Union (OCEU/CUPE 1750). 'His support sends a powerful message — this deal should have been done weeks ago, and the delay lies squarely with WSIB leadership. What's missing is the mandate from the CEO and Board to bring this strike to a fair conclusion.' Despite good-faith efforts and ongoing mediated talks, WSIB has refused to table a final offer. The union's bargaining team remains ready to reach a fair settlement — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 'We're calling on the WSIB to pull out all the stops and get this done before Canada Day,' said Goslin. 'It's time to finish the deal — and restore stability for injured workers across Ontario.' mb/cope491
