Goldrush Guru prepares for SA Derby, Watchme Win earns shot at The Goodwood for trainer Andrew Gluyas
Trainer Andrew Gluyas will push on to Saturday's $1 million South Australian Derby with Goldrush Guru after a 'fair run' in the Group 3 Chairman's Stakes.
Last year's Victoria Derby winner raced keenly in the early stages of the Derby lead-up before jockey Jason Holder was forced to release him to pilot the field.
The colt took up the lead at the 1400m, sticking on honestly for fifth, beaten two and a half lengths by Athanatos.
It wasn't a performance to wax lyrical about, but Gluyas was hopeful it placed the star colt in good shape for the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) on Saturday at Morphettville.
'He's good, he's come through it well, we'll accept and push on to Saturday,' Gluyas said.
'I thought he didn't go too badly, he just couldn't quite settle there and when they slackened the pace a bit he just got flushed out.
'Jason let him roll because he didn't want to have to have an argument with him, he'll be better for that, I think the profile for the back-up this year will really suit him. We are just really keen on an inside draw.'
Goldrush Guru is an $11 chance in Sportsbet's futures market for the SA Derby, in which he will again be ridden by Holder.
Day One of Adelaide's autumn carnival was a positive one for Gluyas: Air Assault and Seeking Stardom performed strongly, while promising sprinter Watchme Win continued his rise with a commanding win in the Group 3 John Hawkes Stakes.

The four-year-old son of Harry Angel will now be tested at Group 1 level in the $1 million The Goodwood (1200m) on May 10.
'We are really excited with the way he's taken a good step each run, he was excellent Saturday,' he said.
'I felt that it was on the back of an excellent run the start before as well, he's building form and racing really well.
'He's got an opportunity to run six furlongs at a high standard (in The Goodwood), I feel that will suit him now too with a few runs under his belt going to 1200m.
'Jason worked hard to get his weight down to ride Watchme Win – that was good.'
'It was almost a career-best performance,' Gluyas said of Seeking Stardom.

Waller eyes group 1 record at bumper Eagle Farm program
When he started training almost three decades ago, Chris Waller would have been 'pretty happy' with a career that included 18 group 1 wins. With that in mind, breaking his Australian record of 18 in one season, a mark he has already achieved twice, is not something the champion Sydney trainer is too worried about heading to Eagle Farm on Saturday, where he has good chances to do just that. Waller has multiple runners in the three group 1s, headlined by Kingsford-Smith Cup favourite Joliestar ($2.20 Sportsbet) and Queensland Derby equal top elect Belle Detelle ($6.50). And while he no doubt wants to win them all, Waller is already content with a campaign highlighted by Via Sistina's record-equalling seven group 1s in a season. 'It's a long season, and it's amazing when you look back at it and say, there's been 18 group 1 winners,' said Waller, who has Via Sistina back in pre-training for a spring assault aimed at defending her Cox Plate crown. 'At the start of my career, if you said I'd train 18, I'd be pretty happy. It is amazing, and they're not easy to win, so we're very proud of our team.' Joliestar is likely to have her winter grand final in the Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m), which was moved back a week, and not in next Saturday's Stradbroke Handicap. 'They've got to have a break, and she doesn't have to prove much more,' Waller said.

Lloyd relieved to survive close shave and reunite with Barber
Zac Lloyd believes Barber can help justify his decision to ride at Randwick instead of Eagle Farm when they reunite in the listed Bob Charley AO Stakes on Saturday. Relieved to escape serious injury from a midweek scare at Warwick Farm, Lloyd was back at the trials on Friday at Rosehill. His foot hit a metal rail while riding pre-race on Wednesday and he went for X-rays on Thursday. Although results had not come back, Lloyd's doctor believed it was only severe bone bruising. Lloyd came through the trials well and was looking to a promising book of rides at Randwick before turning his focus to Queensland next Saturday when he pilots Bosustow in the $3 million Stradbroke Handicap, a race he won with Stefi Magnetica last year to give him a first group 1. 'I didn't have anything stand out in Queensland this week,' Lloyd said. 'I could have had five or six 10- to 20-1 shots, but with the book I had in Sydney, I thought it was worthwhile staying.' The Richard Litt-trained Barber, a $6.50 Sportsbet hope in the feature, is among his best chances at Randwick. A former Godolphin galloper, Barber won his second start for Litt and new connections when edging out Brudenell in the listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford on May 10 for jockey Tyler Schiller. With Schiller sidelined with a back fracture from a pre-race fall at Canterbury last week, Lloyd has gained the job on Barber. Lloyd won two Sydney apprentices' titles while with Godolphin and knows the four-year-old gelding well. 'I'm very excited to ride him because I had a bit to do with him as a younger horse,' Lloyd said. 'He looks to still be racing well, Richard's horses are racing really well, so he should run well.
