Hamas flags were raised at the 'rally to defend Bay Ridge and Palestine' that was held in front of the Islamic Society of By Ridge, Brooklyn on February 26, 2025, and some participants wore Hamas headbands. Abdullah Akl, and employee of MAS Staten Island Center, who spoke on behalf of Within Our Lifetime, said that 'Zionism is an enemy to people, here and across all the world.' Malik Hassan, the executive director of MAS Youth Center led a chant: 'The Zionist is the enemy of Allah!' Hassan has participated in the anti-Israel encampment in Columbia University in April 2024. Another chant leader was Mahmoud Kasem, owner of the local Al-Aqsa Bakery. Raja Abdulhaq, the co-founder of Quds News Network and a frequent speaker at MAS centers in New York, urged participants to follow the sacrifice and resistance of the people of Gaza. 'Um Obeida,' an activist dressed in military fatigues and a keffiyeh face covering - in the style of Izz Al-Din Al-Qassam Brigades' spokesman Abu Obeida - waved a Hamas flag. A female representative of CAIR NY also spoke at the rally. The rally broke up for prayer at the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge twice throughout the evening, and a man sporting an Abu Obeida hoody and Hamas headband was seen praying inside the mosque. The rally was organized by Within Our Lifetime, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) NY, PAL-Awda, Muslim American Society (MAS) New York, Palestinian Youth Movement, Mamas 4 a Free Palestine, and others.

Israel arrests Hamas suspects in Southwest Syria

Shafaq News/ Israeli troops arrested several Hamas operatives in southwestern Syria, the Israeli military announced on Thursday. Carried out overnight, the raid targeted the town of Beit Jinn, about 50 kilometers southwest of Damascus, where Hamas members were allegedly planning attacks on Israeli troops in Syria, according to the military. Firearms and ammunition were seized, and the suspects were transferred to Israel for interrogation. Hamas has yet to comment on the incident. Syria's Interior Ministry rejected Israel's claims, stating that those arrested were civilians from the area. A ministry spokesperson told Reuters that seven people were detained and one person was killed by Israeli fire. Tel Aviv has warned that Damascus could serve as a base for Hamas-style attacks, referring to the October 7 assault, since which Israel has killed more than 54,981 Palestinians—mostly women and children. Following the collapse of Bashar Al-Assad's regime on December 8, 2024, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes, destroying missile depots, radar systems, and chemical weapons facilities, citing concerns about alleged security threats emanating from Syria under its new government. Israeli forces have also launched ground incursions into southern Syria, seizing the demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan Heights, a move seen as a violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. Troops have also fortified positions on Mount Hermon, signaling a push for long-term control.

UN General Assembly to vote on Gaza ceasefire

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to vote on a draft resolution urging an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and the opening of Israeli crossings to enable the delivery of food and urgent humanitarian supplies. Drafted by Spain, the resolution includes a strong condemnation of starvation as a method of warfare, describing its use against civilians as a grave violation of international norms. The vote takes place amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where UN agencies estimate that 93% of the population is experiencing extreme food insecurity. Ongoing airstrikes have destroyed farmland, fisheries, and essential infrastructure, further deepening the emergency. Although Israel lifted an 11-week blockade last month, the flow of aid has remained minimal. For the more than two million residents of the territory, conditions remain critical. Diplomatic sources expect the 193-member assembly to adopt the resolution by a wide margin. Israel, however, has urged member states to reject the measure, calling it a 'politically motivated and futile spectacle.' While General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, they are widely seen as barometers of global opinion and carry symbolic political and moral weight. The vote also comes ahead of an UN-sponsored conference next week, aiming to reenergize global engagement with the two-state solution, as efforts toward resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continue to face significant obstacles. Meanwhile, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has maintained his refusal to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, calling for continued military operations targeting Hamas and opposing negotiations over any potential hostage agreement. Smotrich has also dismissed proposals to reinstate direct Israeli control over the enclave, calling them 'nonsense' and urging officials to block any initiative that could lead to renewed political dialogue.

New Mideast diplomacy: Netanyahu pushes for direct talks with Syria

Shafaq News/ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to initiate direct negotiations with Syria's new government under US mediation, Axios reported, citing two Israeli officials. Netanyahu presented the proposal to US Envoy Tom Barrack during a recent meeting in Jerusalem, aiming to explore normalization, which, if formalized, would mark the first direct engagement between Israel and Syria since 2011, before the outbreak of the Syrian civil war. Barrack, a senior advisor to President Donald Trump, had visited Damascus days earlier, where he met with transitional Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and reopened the US ambassador's residence—closed since 2012. He described the Israel-Syria conflict as 'a solvable problem' and urged starting with a non-aggression agreement to establish diplomatic momentum. Al-Sharaa, a former rebel commander, assumed power following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime in late 2024. His transitional government, formed under an interim constitution adopted in March, has aligned itself closely with Washington and Riyadh. Israeli officials now view al-Sharaa's orientation as a diplomatic opportunity. 'It is better for us that the Syrian government is close to the US and Saudi Arabia,' one senior official told Axios. Initial communications took place via intermediaries but have since progressed to direct meetings in third countries. Officials described al-Sharaa as more pragmatic than expected and emphasized his independence from Turkish influence —an important factor for Israel, which has long opposed Ankara's military presence and backing of Syrian opposition factions. During Barrack's visit, Israel outlined key requirements for any agreement: - Withdrawal of Iranian, Hezbollah, and Turkish military forces from Syria. - Full demilitarization of southern Syria. - Reactivation of the 1974 UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) with the inclusion of US troops. - Binding non-aggression guarantees along the border. UNDOF's monitoring role had eroded during the civil war, but Israeli officials now propose expanding its mandate under a new security framework. The future of the Golan Heights—a territory occupied by Israel since 1967 and formally recognized as Israeli by the Trump administration in 2019—will be central to any talks. While previous Syrian governments demanded full Israeli withdrawal, Israeli officials believe Damascus may adopt a more flexible approach under al-Sharaa's leadership, especially given his alignment with the US.
