We've Been Misreading a Major Law of Physics For Nearly 300 Years
When Isaac Newton wrote down his now-famed laws of motion in 1687, he could have only hoped we'd be discussing them all these centuries later.
Writing in Latin, Newton outlined three universal principles describing how the motion of objects is governed in our Universe, which have since been translated, transcribed, discussed and debated at length.
But according to a philosopher of language and mathematics, we might have been interpreting Newton's precise wording of his first law of motion slightly wrong all along.

Virginia Tech philosopher Daniel Hoek wanted to "set the record straight" after discovering what he describes as a "clumsy mistranslation" in the original 1729 English translation of Newton's Latin Principia.
Based on this translation, countless academics and teachers have since interpreted Newton's first law of inertia to mean an object will continue moving in a straight line or remain at rest unless an outside force intervenes.
It's a description that works well until you appreciate external forces are constantly at work, something Newton would have surely considered in his wording.
Revisiting the archives, Hoek realized this common paraphrasing featured a misinterpretation that flew under the radar until 1999, when two scholars picked up on the translation of one Latin word that had been overlooked: quatenus, which means "insofar", not unless.
To Hoek, this makes all the difference. Rather than describing how an object maintains its momentum if no forces are impressed on it, Hoek says the new reading shows Newton meant that every change in a body's momentum – every jolt, dip, swerve, and spurt – is due to external forces.
"By putting that one forgotten word [insofar] back in place, [those scholars] restored one of the fundamental principles of physics to its original splendor," Hoek explained in a blog post describing his findings, published academically in a 2022 research paper.
However, that all-important correction never caught on. Even now it might struggle to gain traction against the weight of centuries of repetition.
"Some find my reading too wild and unconventional to take seriously," Hoek remarks. "Others think that it is so obviously correct that it is barely worth arguing for."
Ordinary folks might agree it sounds like semantics. And Hoek admits the reinterpretation hasn't and won't change physics. But carefully inspecting Newton's own writings clarifies what the pioneering mathematician was thinking at the time.
"A great deal of ink has been spilt on the question what the law of inertia is really for," explains Hoek, who was puzzled as a student by what Newton meant.
If we take the prevailing translation, of objects traveling in straight lines until a force compels them otherwise, then it raises the question: why would Newton write a law about bodies free of external forces when there is no such thing in our Universe; when gravity and friction are ever-present?
"The whole point of the first law is to infer the existence of the force," George Smith, a philosopher at Tufts University and an expert in Newton's writings, told journalist Stephanie Pappas for Scientific American.
In fact, Newton gave three concrete examples to illustrate his first law of motion: the most insightful, according to Hoek, being a spinning top – that as we know, slows in a tightening spiral due to the friction of air.
"By giving this example," Hoek writes, "Newton explicitly shows us how the First Law, as he understands it, applies to accelerating bodies which are subject to forces – that is, it applies to bodies in the real world."
Hoek says this revised interpretation brings home one of Newton's most fundamental ideas that was utterly revolutionary at the time. That is, the planets, stars, and other heavenly bodies are all governed by the same physical laws as objects on Earth.
"Every change in speed and every tilt in direction," Hoek mused – from swarms of atoms to swirling galaxies – "is governed by Newton's First Law."
Making us all feel once again connected to the farthest reaches of space.

How our 3 largest local school districts did on the 2025 Spring STAAR tests
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Central Texas' three most populous districts scored better on the Spring 2025 STAAR test's algebra and biology sections compared to the Spring 2024 tests, but worse on the English sections, according to data released Tuesday by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Texas Education Agency releases Spring 2025 STAAR test results Due to the volume of data, KXAN looked at the STAAR EOC test group summaries for our three largest districts: Austin ISD, Leander ISD and Round Rock ISD. Compared to last year's results, AISD students did worse on the English II test but were roughly in line with last year's English I results. LISD and RRISD did better than AISD on those sections; however, both experienced slight drops in their English I and II scores compared to 2024 AISD students also did better on the U.S. History portion. LISD students did worse than last year, but still performed better than AISD on the section. RRISD students scored about the same on history as they did in 2024. Texas as a whole did better on biology than it did in 2024. AISD saw that improvement reflected in its scores. LISD and RRISD's scores in biology did not change significantly. The LISD-RRISD similarities didn't carry over to algebra — AISD and LISD both improved on the section but RRISD did not. Penn State environmental program receives state award
PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — A Penn State program is one of 19 projects that have been granted the 2025 Governor's Awards for Environmental Excellence. The projects were evaluated on their degree of environmental protection, innovation, partnership, economic impact, consideration of climate change, sustainability, and environmental justice, as well as outcomes achieved. The program is a K-5 educational program funded by a USDA NIFA K-14 grant. It works to teach students about pollination, pollinators and their impact on food security. The program's curriculum consists of 19 STEELS-aligned lessons provided in both English and Spanish. Last year, the program was implemented in 42 school districts and reached over 1,700 students. 'The Environmental Excellence honorees embody the innovative thinking needed to protect our environment and shape a more sustainable future here in Pennsylvania,' Department of Environmental Protection Acting Secretary Jessica Shirley said. 'Together, we will spur the next generation of environmental stewards. These projects showcase our ability to work collaboratively to preserve and protect Pennsylvania's natural resources.' New images reveal treasures aboard ‘holy grail' shipwreck

New research revealing details of gold coins found aboard a shipwreck off Colombia provides further evidence that the vessel was the San José galleon, a 300-year-old Spanish warship believed to contain artifacts worth billions of dollars. Scientists used an unmanned underwater vehicle to survey the wreck and captured images of some of its cargo, according to a study published in the journal Antiquity on Tuesday. They then used photogrammetry to make three-dimensional reconstructions of the coins, revealing a Jerusalem cross and heraldic symbols of the crowns of the Spanish monarchs of Castile and León. They also uncovered symbols showing that the coins were minted in Lima, Peru, in 1707, proving the shipwreck occurred after that date. Historical records show that the San José was part of a shipping fleet known as the Flota de Tierra Firme. It was one of a number of ships in the fleet that left Peru in 1707 carrying a large amount of royal cargo, but records show that it never reached Spain, instead sinking off Colombia following a battle with British forces in 1708. Researchers say the coins strengthen the case that this is indeed the San José, often called the 'holy grail of shipwrecks.' 'Hand-struck, irregularly shaped coins — known as cobs in English and macuquinas in Spanish — served as the primary currency in the Americas for more than two centuries,' lead researcher Daniela Vargas Ariza from Colombia's national history and anthropology institute (ICANH) said in a statement published Tuesday. 'The Tierra Firme Fleet, commanded by the San José Galleon, held the exclusive monopoly on transporting royal treasures between South America and the Iberian Peninsula,' she said. 'This find presents a rare opportunity to explore an underwater archaeological site and deepen our understanding of eighteenth-century maritime trade and routes,' said Vargas Ariza. Study author Jesús Alberto Aldana Mendoza, an archaeologist specializing in underwater cultural heritage, told CNN that it was 'very surprising to find them during our research and to be able to analyze them so closely.' The project 'has been able to study the artifacts from the site like never before, as it has managed to link archaeological material with historical documents,' he added. Since it sank, the ship has lain undisturbed off the coast of the Caribbean port city of Cartagena, despite the historical significance of the artifacts contained in it, which are worth an estimated $17 billion, due to an ongoing multi-billion-dollar legal battle. While the Colombian government maintains that it first discovered the San José in 2015 with help from international scientists, its claims have been disputed by a US-based marine salvage company named Sea Search-Armada (SSA), formerly known as Glocca Morra, which argues that it discovered the shipwreck in the early 1980s. SSA has launched a legal battle against the Colombian government in the international Permanent Court of Arbitration, claiming it is entitled to approximately $10 billion — half the estimated value of the shipwreck's treasure. The Colombian government disputes SSA's claims.
