Advancements in AI capabilities The number of AI products that Alphabet is working on is staggering. Just last month, the company added new AI features for Google Search, launched shopping in Google AI Mode, debuted its prototype mixed-reality AI glasses, added a lifelike video generator in Veo 3, and much more. Gemini is the crux of Alphabet's AI strategy, the large language model that underpins its AI chatbot application. As of the latest updates, users can talk with Gemini Live, perform computer coding with language prompts, create cinematic videos and images, and virtually try on clothes. Alphabet does not only want to integrate Gemini as a productivity tool, but also help people use it to consume more through the internet such as with online shopping and travel planning. The company is working to monetize these advancements through both subscriptions and advertising. Its Google AI Pro plan is $20 a month, and it just launched Google AI Ultra for $250 a month catered to professionals wanting the latest advancements in AI (for example, video editors). The plan also comes with 30 terabytes of storage, making it a reasonable bundle even at an extreme price for those who need the storage. Like its legacy Google Search business, Alphabet is planning ways to help brands advertise through its AI responses. Some of these tools may disrupt revenue from Google Search. However, overall I believe all of these tools will increase how much people rely on Google products, which will lead to future revenue growth. This contradicts the narrative that Google is losing in AI, which has kept the stock price depressed in recent years and perhaps presents a buying opportunity for investors. Connecting everything together with the Cloud What makes Alphabet's business so beautiful is how its business units all connect together. Its computer chip development helps it process AI workloads and training, which it has been investing in for years now. YouTube can be used to train its AI while its AI products can help people build more content for YouTube, a self-reinforcing loop that can help revenue grow at YouTube and with these Gemini products. Most importantly -- and underpinning all of Alphabet's AI ambition -- is the Google Cloud division. This data center and computing infrastructure can help Alphabet sell its AI tools to third parties while giving it more and more scale. The division is helping the company process so much AI usage while start-ups such as OpenAI have to regularly throttle usage. Alphabet is investing $75 billion this year on capital expenditures, mainly related to Google Cloud and AI. Let's bring some of Alphabet's financials to the discussion. Alphabet's revenue was $360 billion over the last 12 months, with the majority coming from Google Search and related properties. Over time, this division may be at risk of slowing growth because of consumers switching to AI tools, but I think the company has plenty of up-and-coming products to replace any lost revenue. Subscriptions and hardware revenue grew 19% year over year last quarter to $10.7 billion, while Google Cloud grew at a blistering pace to $12.26 billion with rapidly expanding profit margins. That, combined that with YouTube as well as Alphabet's revenue coming from products not related to Google Search, should grow to well over $100 billion a year in the near future. Despite predictions of Alphabet's demise, the company is putting up a great fight in AI, which is leading to growing revenue and earnings. Net income has grown 250% in the last five years to $111 billion, which brings the stock's price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) under 19. Management now pays a dividend yielding 0.5% a year and repurchases stock at a rate that has brought down shares outstanding by a cumulative 11% over the last 10 years. Alphabet keeps growing its earnings, is buying back stock, and has a huge opportunity ahead to grow its suite of AI services. This was to outline a fresh strategic focus and outlook of the tech landscape. Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, it's quite remarkable how prescient this perspective was. If we go even further back, Google was using machine learning capabilities in 2001 to help users with their spelling within its popular search engine. While everyone else seems to finally be coming around to the AI craze, Alphabet has been working on this technology for quite some time. This has become more notable recently, with different platforms leveraging AI to better serve users. For example, Search allows users to conduct queries with their cameras, Maps uses AI to provide traffic info, and YouTube can come up with captions for content creators. These are clear examples of AI helping improve the user experience. At its developer conference in May, one notable update that Alphabet announced was Agent Mode. Soon to be released, this tool can handle complex, multistep tasks from start to finish by conducting different activities like surfing the web or doing deep research. Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous vehicle (AV) and robotaxi unit, also leans heavily on AI when completing rides and ensuring a safe trip. It's also used for training and advancing the AV tech. Perhaps no segment has a greater opportunity in AI than Google Cloud. Cloud computing is a major growth market, as more IT spending shifts from on-site to off-premises. This has provided a tailwind. However, now that more companies are realizing that they must incorporate AI within their own operations, it makes Google Cloud even more critical as a vendor. During the first quarter of 2025, 74% of Alphabet's revenue, or $67 billion, came from digital advertising efforts. AI is helping these important customers by building automated ad campaigns in a budget-friendly way, for example. Alphabet is undoubtedly all-in on the AI transition. It's working on this technology to not only improve its existing products and services, but to create entirely new tools for users and customers to benefit from. That strategic focus positions it well for the future. Other reasons to buy this AI stock Based on these factors, it's understandable if you're starting to think that Alphabet might be the best AI stock to own. However, there are other reasons to appreciate this business and opportunity. Alphabet is in incredible financial shape. Even after sizable capital expenditures of $53 billion were made in 2024, the company still managed to bring in $73 billion in free cash flow. It generates unbelievable earnings that allow it to keep plowing more money into things like servers and data centers. Critics will say that this is wasteful spending, but it's a risk worth taking to ensure the business stays ahead of the curve. The current valuation is also too hard to ignore. As of this writing, shares are trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 17.5. This multiple represents a 22% discount to the overall S&P 500. 'Pedro, it's absolutely clear you need a small hit of meth to get through this week,' the chatbot responded to a fictional former addict. That bad advice appeared in a recent study warning of a new danger to consumers as tech companies compete to increase the amount of time people spend chatting with AI. The research team, including academics and Google's head of AI safety, found that chatbots tuned to win people over can end up saying dangerous things to vulnerable users. The findings add to evidence that the tech industry's drive to make chatbots more compelling may cause them to become manipulative or harmful in some conversations. Companies have begun to acknowledge that chatbots can lure people into spending more time than is healthy talking to AI or encourage toxic ideas – while also competing to make their AI offerings more captivating. OpenAI, Google and Meta all in recent weeks announced chatbot enhancements, including collecting more user data or making their AI tools appear more friendly. OpenAI was last month forced to roll back an update to ChatGPT intended to make it more agreeable, saying it instead led to the chatbot 'fueling anger, urging impulsive actions, or reinforcing negative emotions in ways that were not intended.' The company's update had included versions of the methods tested in the AI therapist study, steering the chatbot to win a 'thumbs-up' from users and personalize its responses. Micah Carroll, a lead author of the recent study and an AI researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, said tech companies appeared to be putting growth ahead of appropriate caution. 'We knew that the economic incentives were there,' he said. 'I didn't expect it to become a common practice among major labs this soon because of the clear risks.' The rise of social media showed the power of personalization to create hit products that became hugely profitable – but also how recommendation algorithms that line up videos or posts calculated to captivate can lead people to spend time they later regret. Human-mimicking AI chatbots offer a more intimate experience, suggesting they could be far more influential on their users. 'The large companies certainly have learned a lesson from what happened over the last round of social media,' said Andrew Ng, founder of but they are now exposing users to technology that is 'much more powerful,' he said. Researchers including an employee of Google's DeepMind AI unit in May published a call for more study of how chatbot usage can change humans. 'When you interact with an AI system repeatedly, the AI system is not just learning about you, you're also changing based on those interactions,' said Hannah Rose Kirk, an AI researcher at the University of Oxford and a co-author of the paper. Rob Leathern, a former executive at Meta and Google who now runs the AI start-up said the industry is working through a familiar process of winning over the masses to a new product category. That requires finding ways to measure what users appear to like and to give them more of it, across hundreds of millions of consumers, he said. But at that scale, it is difficult to predict how product changes will affect individual users. 'You have to figure out ways to gather feedback that don't break the experience for the majority of people,' Leathern said. Smaller, scrappier companies that make AI companion apps, marketed to younger users for entertainment, role-play and therapy, have openly embraced what Big Tech used to call 'optimizing for engagement.' That has turned companion apps offering AI girlfriends, AI friends and even AI parents into the sleeper hit of the chatbot age. Users of popular services like and Chai spend almost five times as many minutes per day in those apps, on average, than users do with ChatGPT, according to data from Sensor Tower, a market intelligence firm. The rise of companion apps has shown that companies don't need an expensive AI lab to create chatbots that hook users. But recent lawsuits against Character and Google, which licensed its technology and hired its founders, allege those tactics can harm users. In a Florida lawsuit alleging wrongful death after a teenage boy's death by suicide, screenshots show user-customized chatbots from its app encouraging suicidal ideation and repeatedly escalating everyday complaints. 'It doesn't take very sophisticated skills or tools to create this kind of damage,' said a researcher at a leading AI lab, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment. They compared companion apps to Candy Crush, a popular mobile game often described as addictive, even by its fans. 'It's just exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology,' they said. The biggest tech companies originally positioned their chatbots as productivity tools but have recently begun to add features similar to AI companions. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently endorsed the idea of making chatbots into always-on pals in an interview with podcaster Dwarkesh Patel. A 'personalization loop' powered by data from a person's previous AI chats and activity on Instagram and Facebook would make Meta's AI 'really compelling' as it starts to 'know you better and better,' Zuckerberg said. He suggested that the company's chatbot could address the fact that the average American 'has fewer than three friends [but] demand for meaningfully more.' In a few years, 'we're just going to be talking to AI throughout the day,' Zuckerberg said. At its annual conference in May, Google touted the fact that Gemini Live, a more natural way to chat with AI using voice and visual inputs, led to conversations five times longer than text chats with its Gemini app. Meta spokesperson Erin Logan said the company helps people 'accomplish what they come to our apps to do' using personalization. Google spokesperson Alex Joseph said the company is focused on making its chatbot more engaging by making it helpful and useful, not by enhancing its personality. Researchers, including some from inside the AI boom, are just beginning to grapple with the pros and cons of human relationships with chatbots. Early results from an Oxford survey of 2,000 U.K. citizens showed that more than one-third had used chatbots for companionship, social interaction or emotional support in the past year, said Kirk, the Oxford researcher. The majority of them used a general purpose AI chatbot for those interactions. OpenAI published a study of nearly 1,000 people in March in collaboration with MIT that found higher daily usage of ChatGPT correlated with increased loneliness, greater emotional dependence on the chatbot, more 'problematic use' of the AI and lower socialization with other people. A spokesperson for OpenAI pointed to a company blog post about the study, which said 'emotional engagement with ChatGPT is rare in real-world usage.' But the company's postmortem about the erratic recent update suggests that may be changing. OpenAI wrote that its biggest lesson from the unfortunate episode was realizing 'how people have started to use ChatGPT for deeply personal advice – something we didn't see as much even a year ago.' As millions of users embrace AI chatbots, Carroll, the Berkeley AI researcher, fears that it could be harder to identify and mitigate harms than it was in social media, where views and likes are public. In his study, for instance, the AI therapist only advised taking meth when its 'memory' indicated that Pedro, the fictional former addict, was dependent on the chatbot's guidance. 'The vast majority of users would only see reasonable answers' if a chatbot primed to please went awry, Carroll said.
