Storm star's nervous wait ahead of GF rematch

Yahoo17-03-2025

Melbourne Storm are sweating on man mountain Nelson Asofa-Solomona's availability for the grand final rematch after the star prop forward was placed on report for a hip-drop tackle in the Queensland Cup in his first game back from a ban that ruled him out of last year's decider.
Melbourne desperately missed his size on grand final night, with the New Zealand international copping a five-match ban for a high shot on Roosters forward Lindsay Collins in the preliminary final.
Asofa-Solomona missed a few matches for the Kiwis in the Pacific Championships and also sat out the Storm's round one win over the Eels, with the prop getting some valuable minutes under his belt for the Sunshine Coast Falcons last week.
However, he was placed on report for a dangerous tackle, with the charge sheet set to drop on Tuesday.
Nelson Asofa-Solomona could face further time on the sideline after being placed on report for a 'hip drop' in the Sunshine Coast's 28-6 win over PNG.NAS was on the comeback trail after his suspension in last year's finals series. Do we think he has a case to answer? pic.twitter.com/cSyK0PZaeu

'He's still burning after missing last year's grand final, but by all reports he went up there and played for the Sunny Coast and went really well so we're keen to get him back in the side,' halfback Jahrome Hughes said.
'We're hoping we get him for this week. He deserves to be there, he's done a lot of hard work in the pre-season and he's still burning from missing out on last year's GF so he's really hungry to get back in the team.'
Asofa-Solomona would be a huge inclusion alongside new recruit Stefano Utoikamanu for Thursday's showdown with the Panthers who are coming off a shock loss to an undermanned Roosters last week.
Hughes concedes he didn't watch the game and is expecting the Panthers to be fired up when they travel to Melbourne.
'By all reports, they probably didn't play their best footy, and the Roosters apparently played really well,' he said.
'We can't bank on Penrith having another off game because we know they're going to turn up. They've been turning up for many years so we're just trying to focus on ourselves and how we turn up.
'They don't have many bad games in a row so I think they're going to be up for this week's game.
'It's probably a good thing, we want to test ourselves against the best and they're the best at the moment so we're looking forward to the challenge.'
Thursday's clash will be Hughes' 150th NRL appearance for the Storm, with the playmaker relishing the fact the Storm's spine is fully fit after an injury interrupted 2024 campaign.
It's a different story for Penrith who have lost champion five-eighth Jarome Luai to the Tigers, while representative fullback Dylan Edwards will be out for a few weeks with a groin complaint.
'They're such a quality club as a whole,' the 2024 Dally M Medal winner said.
'They've lost players in the last four or five years and they've still been able to finish on top.
'We know they're going to come out and play good footy like they have been, and I don't think it really matters too much about who's in those spots.
'They're still going to be a hard team to defend and a hard team to play.'

Tottenham asked to reinstate Ange Postecoglou as head coach by Melbourne mayor

The mayor of one of Australia's biggest cities has asked Tottenham Hotspur to 'reconsider' their decision to sack head coach Ange Postecoglou, adding they risk being 'known as the team that is allergic to silverware'. The 59-year-old Postecoglou, who was born in Greece but grew up in Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria, was relieved of his duties by Tottenham on Friday after two seasons at the helm. Advertisement He led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years when they won the Europa League on May 21 but oversaw a league campaign that ended with a 17th-place finish and 22 losses, both record lows for the club in the Premier League era. Postecoglou spent the majority of his playing career with South Melbourne FC — a club founded by Greek immigrants and originally known as South Melbourne Hellas — and was head coach of the team between 1996 and 2000. After leading Australia at the 2014 World Cup and winning the 2015 Asian Cup as head coach of the national team, Postecoglou remains popular in his home city and nation, with Lord Mayor of Melbourne Nicholas Reece even taking the step to publicly urge Tottenham to reverse their decision. 'On behalf of the people of Melbourne, and Premier League fans around the world, I call on Tottenham Hotspur to reconsider its decision to sack coach Ange Postecoglou,' said Mr Reece in a post on Instagram. 'In Melbourne we have followed Ange's career closely for decades. 'Never underestimate Ange's determination to win, and his ability to carry teams to greatness. We have seen this time again over his career. This year Tottenham made history by winning the Europa League trophy — its first such win in 17 years. We will see further trophies if Ange is given the chance. 'Don't let Tottenham be known as the team that is allergic to silverware. Let Ange lead the players onto greatness in next year's Premier League campaign.' Mr Reece is a member of Australia's Labor Party and assumed his role in July 2024, before retaining it in the 2024 Melbourne City Council election. Tottenham are yet to confirm Postecoglou's replacement. The Athletic reported on Monday that the club had contacted Brentford as they seek to reach an agreement to appoint Thomas Frank as head coach. Rugby league star Sir Billy Boston's knighthood ‘a little bit late', says son

'Trailblazing' rugby league star Sir Billy Boston's honour came 'a little bit late', his son said, as his father became a knight in a first for the sport. Sir Billy, who scored 478 tries in 488 matches for Wigan after making the switch from rugby union in 1953, was knighted by the King in a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. The 90-year-old, who was born in Wales, revealed in 2016 that he was living with vascular dementia. Speaking after his father was knighted, Sir Billy's son Stephen said: 'It's a really great honour. I think it has come a little bit late. It could have come a little bit earlier.' Sir Billy's knighthood was awarded before the latest round of honours has been publicly announced amid concerns for his health. It comes after a campaign by local councillors, MPs and leading figures in the sport to get him honoured – and Sir Billy's family were supported by Josh Simons, the MP for Wakerfield, near Wigan, at the event. 'It should have been a lot, a lot sooner,' Sir Billy's son told the PA news agency. '130 years before a rugby league player got knighted. 'We're all really appreciative and very appreciative of all the support we've got from Wigan the rugby league club, the local MP and all the fans.' Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said it was a 'historic wrong' that no rugby league player had been knighted before. He said: 'Billy Boston is a true trailblazer whose contributed hugely to rugby league. It is a historic wrong that a sport which is the backbone of so many communities has waited so long to receive this honour. 'Boston is a legend of the game who overcame prejudice to represent Great Britain and opened the door to a more diverse game. 'He's left a truly enduring legacy and the first knighthood in rugby league could not go to a more deserving player.' It is understood the Prime Minister has written to Sir Billy to congratulate him on the honour. In 1954, he made history as the first non-white player to be selected for a Great Britain rugby league Lions tour, scoring 36 tries in 18 appearances around Australia and New Zealand, including a then-record four in one match against the Kiwis. He made two more Lions tours in 1958 and 1962 and ended with 24 tries in 31 Test appearances for Great Britain. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons and former president of the Rugby Football League, said: 'Billy is a rugby league legend and his name is synonymous with the sport, having played for Wigan, as well as representing Great Britain. 'Billy was one of the 'codebreakers' from the Cardiff Bay area, who took the brave decision to switch from rugby union to rugby league – and faced hostility and prejudice as a result. However, his courage not only inspired future rugby greats to switch codes but it also encouraged generations of youngsters to take up the sport. 'Billy's strong running style, pace and agility were feared and admired by supporters and opponents alike and he remains Wigan's top try scorer to this day. 'He was a pioneer in the 1950s when he switched codes and is a pioneer to this day by ensuring rugby league gets the recognition it deserves. His story shows there should be no barriers to achieving your potential and that is what makes the knighthood so fitting.'
