Athlone Town release five members of playing squad
Athlone Town's season goes from bad to worse with five high-profile players released by the club.
The Midlands club has been without a manager since the departure of Dario Costello last month, reliant on an interim management team plucked from its underage set-up.
And now the club has confirmed that Adam Wixted, Declan McDaid, Kyle O'Connor, JR Wilson and Bastien Héry have been released. Danny Byrne, one of the interim coaches, has also had to step aside.
The club did not disclose the reasoning behind their decision.
Town have been linked with a takeover this year without coming to pass and talk has cooled in recent weeks.
None of the players will be available to move elsewhere until the transfer window reopens on 1 July.
Town have been seeking new investors for some time. The arrangement with US-based Valeo Futbol Partnership ended towards the end of last year.
Athlone host Cobh Ramblers on Friday evening in Lisywollen. Whilst propping up the table, they remain only five points off the playoff places.

Ireland sign off season with low-key draw in Luxembourg
The Republic of Ireland ended their season with a largely underwhelming 0-0 draw away to Luxembourg. Following the 1-1 draw with Senegal last Friday, manager Heimir Hallgrimsson made five personnel changes, including a debut for goalkeeper Max O'Leary. The 'end-of-term' vibes were evident at Stade de Luxembourg as Ireland struggled to find any real rhythm against a side ranked 91st in the world, hitting the woodwork in both halves without looking like cutting the hosts apart. The opening period saw Luxembourg create more chances, yet it was the Boys in Green that went closest to breaking the deadlock. In a scrappy affair, it was just short of the half-hour mark before a meaningful goalscoring opportunity was created. Evan Ferguson coughed up possession in midfield and Luxembourg's most industrious player, Danel Sinani, struck a crisp effort that required debutant O'Leary to go at full-stretch to keep out. The hosts looked the more likely to score but three minutes before the interval it was the woodwork that denied Hallgrimmson's side the lead. Dara O'Shea was there to meet the free-kick and guided it toward goal where his defensive partner Nathan Collins got his head to it, the captain's effort bouncing back off the bar. 42 mins: 🇱🇺 LUX 0-0 🇮🇪 IRL Nathan Collins hits the woodwork from a rebounded free kick just before half-time. 📺 @rte2 & @rteplayer from 7:30pm 📱 Follow a live blog 👇 — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) June 10, 2025 Kasey McAteer – from close range – and substitute Jack Taylor from outside the area both saw efforts fizz wide, while Parrott couldn't sort his feet out in the area shortly after the resumption to threaten the Luxembourg goal. The only thing of note in the concluding stages was the international debut handed to John Joe Patrick Finn, the French-based, Spanish-born midfielder from French Ligue 2 club Reims who replaced Jason Knight in the engine room in the final minute. The Republic's next outing is a crunch home game with Hungary on 6 September where Hungary will be the visitors for the opening game in World Cup qualification.

Councillor calls for League of Ireland team to be set up in Clare
The possibility of Clare becoming home to a League of Ireland soccer team is to be raised in the chamber of Clare County Council. At last night's June meeting of the local authority Sinn Féin councillor Tommy Guilfoyle had a motion on the agenda calling for "the appropriate personnel in Clare County Council to come together and set up a discussion to explore the possible setup of a League of Ireland soccer team in the Banner County with all the relevant stakeholders". While the meeting over ran and the motion was deferred to the July monthly meeting, Councillor Guilfoyle is adamant that there is sufficient demand for a League of Ireland team in the county. "For years I've lived in this community, and I've seen the wealth of young people who play soccer," the Clarecastle-based councillor said. "So, we have all these kids playing soccer in county Clare but the majority of them if they want to play League of Ireland are going to Treaty United in Limerick or Galway United," he added. As to who would finance the early stages of this potential project, Councillor Guilfoyle said that it would not be the local authority. "I wouldn't be putting that to the council at all," he said. "My view of the council getting involved is to bring parties together. "We have an economic development department, we have a tourism department and we have a sporting department. "Three people from those departments could come together, call in others, sit down and have a conversation about this." "That conversation would itch the ear off an investor. I know it would," Councillor Guilfoyle predicted. "And what happens then is investors ears cock," he added. In 2023 Newmarket Celtic became the first Clare club to win the FAI Junior Cup while Avenue United reached the final of that competition in 1990. Alan O'Callaghan who is Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council is supportive of the concept of a League of Ireland team being based in the county. "We're sowing a seed into people's heads at a higher level like the FAI," he said. "There are going to be huge challenges with funding but hopefully something might come out of it, you'd never know." "There might be someone that would be willing to say, 'this is not a bad idea,'" he suggested. Funding from county council ruled out However, Councillor O'Callaghan ruled out any source of funding from the county council. "We don't have that kind of money but there are different programmes that do pop-up for funding through Sports Capital Grants. "Maybe the council can put one forward and maybe identify a site." In Lees Road municipal sports ground in Ennis a number of people were supportive of a Clare bid to hosting League of Ireland soccer. "I travel up to Sligo, to Treaty [Limerick] and to Galway to watch League of Ireland. I would much prefer to watch a team in Clare. I'd have more of an emotional attachment to that," one person said. "I think it would be a great idea. There's lots of interest in soccer in Clare. It would be worth giving it a try and see what happens," another added. "The more soccer we have here the better. Anyone interested in soccer in Clare is going to Limerick or Galway to see League of Ireland matches," a third person pointed out.
