WS Industries to invest Rs4,000cr for 600-acre industrial park at Sunguvarchatram
CHENNAI:
WS industries India Ltd plans to invest about $500 million (about Rs 4,000 crore) in developing an industrial park over 600 acres at Sunguvarchatram near Chennai, close to the electronics hub that houses Foxconn and Samsung.
The company has acquired 400 acres of land, including around 250 acres, through SARFAESI auction, that belonged to IVRCL which had originally planned an industrial township. It intends to acquire an additional 200 acres of private land from individuals for the park that will house logistics warehouse, data centres and industrial housing among others.
'The focus is to develop and manage Grade A industrial real estate, data centres and logistics and warehouse parks to cater to multinational companies and pan-India players that have industrial facilities in the region,' WSI chairman
Nagarajan Seyyadurai
told
TOI
.
It will join hands with international consultants to prepare a detailed project report to this effect. The IVRCL land included a defunct nine-hole golf course and WSI plans to regenerate it to become the hub of its industrial park.
'At 0.5 FSI, the company can easily develop 15 million sqft of industrial as well as logistics warehouse space. Given its proximity to the electronics hub, there is huge demand for developed industrial land, ' sources said.
The company is in the process of raising around Rs 440 crore fresh capital by placing its shares at Rs 100 a share with promoters and non-promoters including institutions, private entities and individuals.
The fresh capital will be deployed for land acquisition and working capital requirements, sources said.
The park is located close to the proposed new international airport near Parandur and the existing Oragadam industrial estate and Chennai-Bengaluru expressway.
The acquired land has been converted to facilitate multi-use development.
WS industries India is now engaged in the EPC business and has executed infrastructure projects worth Rs 650 crore in the past 24 months. It is also in the process of developing a one million sqft IT park on Mount Poonamallee road and the project is in the approval stage.

PSBs told to monetise investments in arms
New Delhi: The finance ministry has asked public sector banks (PSBs) to look at monetising their investment in subsidiaries by listing them at bourses after further scaling up operations so that they realise good return. There are about 15 subsidiaries or joint ventures of PSBs lined up for initial public offering or divestment in medium to long term, sources said. Wherever required banks should invest funds to scale up operations of their subsidiaries or joint ventures, sources said, adding, banks can look at unlocking value at an opportune time. As a precursor to monetisation, sources said, banks should improve governance, professional decision-making and bring in greater operational efficiency in their subsidiaries. For example, the country's biggest lender State Bank of India may look at listing SBI General Insurance and SBI Payment Services in the future after they scale up their operations. SBI General Insurance Company, incorporated on Feb 24, 2009, earned a profit of Rs 509 crore for the financial year ended March 2025. The general insurance arm of SBI has allotted 3,71,693 equity shares of Rs 10 each during the year ended March 2025. Consequently, the stake of SBI in SBI General Insurance Company has reduced from 69.1% to 68.9%. SBI Payment Services, which is in the merchant acquiring business, is 74% owned by SBI, and the rest with Hitachi Payment Services. SBI Payments is one of the largest acquirers in the country, with more than 33.1 lakh merchant payment acceptance touch points as of March 31, 2024, including 13.7 lakh POS (point of sales) machines, deployed across geographies. agencies Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . K'taka Bank MD & exec director quit
MUMBAI: Karnataka Bank on Saturday saw both its MD & CEO, Srikrishnan Hari Hara Sarma, and executive director, Sekhar Rao, resign, marking a major leadership shake-up for the century-old private lender. To maintain operational stability during the transition, the board appointed Raghavendra Srinivas Bhat as COO, effective July 2. The leadership exits come after a year of growing strain within the bank. Governance tensions came to a head in May when the bank's auditors flagged certain overlimit expenses. The board refused to ratify the expenditures and asked for the amounts to be recovered. The standoff between the board and management that followed was considered unprecedented for the institution. Adding to the pressure, Karnataka Bank in Feb had to reverse Rs 18.87 crore worth of suspicious cross-border UPI transactions due to reconciliation failures. A forensic audit was ordered in April at the direction of the board and the RBI. The bank has since stated that the audit observations have been amicably resolved and that it remains well-capitalised.
