CM Majhi to lead Odisha delegation at India Steel 2025 in Mumbai
BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday left for Mumbai to take part in the three-day India Steel-2025 conference at the Bombay Exhibition Centre there.
He will lead the state delegation at the high-profile event being organised by the Ministry of Steel in collaboration with FICCI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the conference in the presence of global dignitaries and industry stalwarts.
The state will host the 'Roundtable: Odisha - Focusing on Expanding Steel Production and Raw Material Supply'. Chaired by the chief minister, the session will bring together top players of India's steel industry, including Tata Steel, JSPL, JSW, SAIL, AM/NS, among others.
The roundtable aims to underline Odisha's position as the steel capital of India and will highlight the state's strengths in raw material availability, robust infrastructure, progressive policies, and downstream potential.
Senior officials from the state will make detailed presentations during the session, while industry leaders are expected to share insights and experiences. A specially curated film showcasing Odisha's thriving metal sector ecosystem will also be screened.
Majhi will have exclusive one-on-one business-to-government (B2G) meetings with leading industrialists from the steel and allied sectors. He will also hold discussions with key industry associations, including the Indian Chemical Council (ICC) and Indian Drug Manufacturers Association (IDMA), to promote Odisha's sectoral advantages.

MSRTC to shun pvt contractors, buy own buses: Sarnaik
Pune: State transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Wednesday said henceforth, MSRTC will not procure buses under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model but will own the vehicles. The GCC model involves public transport bodies partnering with private agencies to procure, operate and maintain buses. The minister, while speaking on the sidelines of Commercial Vehicles Forum-2025 in Pune, said, "We want to own our buses. MSRTC aims to procure 5,000 self-owned buses annually, of which 1,000 will be electric smart buses, while the remaining will be diesel-run. We plan to procure 25,000 buses in the next five years." Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) pays a fixed price per km to private agencies for the service. The private players bear the cost of the upkeep of the vehicles. "The state govt will provide funds to procure the buses. The number of buses in MSRTC's fleet has drastically reduced, so the decision was made to procure our own buses," Sarnaik said. The state transport body's move comes after it received only 216 e-buses out of the planned 5,150 e-buses from Olectra Greentech and Evey Trans Pvt Ltd. The contract, worth Rs 10,000 crore, was signed in 2023, under which the buses were to be delivered this year. However, after only 216 of the buses were delivered to the state transport body, Sarnaik ordered the termination of the contract last month. The minister, however, reversed the decision and told the consortium to deliver the buses adhering to a fresh timeline. As per the revised timeline, 625 buses would be delivered to MSRTC in 2025; 2,100 buses in 2026, and the remaining buses in 2027. The new e-buses will include AI-enabled CCTV cameras that will monitor driver behaviour. If the driver yawns or uses a cellphone while driving, the system will alert passengers and trigger a danger alarm. Taking into consideration the safety of women passengers, the cameras will also monitor passengers' movements and activities. "The buses will be equipped with foam-based fire extinguishers and will have systems to prevent unauthorised entry when the buses are parked or locked. Any such attempt will trigger an alarm," Sarnaik said. At present, MSRTC has around 15,000 buses in its fleet. As many as 2,600 regular buses will be added to the current fleet by the end of the year, and a few existing buses will be scrapped. Regular commuters, however, said the transport body has been overpromising and underdelivering. "Some or the other plan is being announced each week, but there are no changes on the ground," Girish Sahne, a regular MSRTC commuter, told TOI. Meanwhile, the minister said the authorities concerned are working on resolving the issue of the Shivajinagar bus stand. "Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar held a meeting recently. The issue will be resolved soon. Also, the plan to redevelop 72 bus stations is in progress. We are focusing on the cleanliness and security of bus depots and stations. After the alleged Swargate rape case, we are focusing on the safety of women. So, we are looking at smart buses with facilities powered by AI," the minister said.

The Union government and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state governments on Wednesday continued to highlight the achievements of the 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) dispensation, with the Prime Minister posting on social media details of the 'infrastructure revolution' during this period. "It's been 11 years of infrastructure revolution with outstanding infrastructure being added that has enhanced India's growth trajectory," Modi said on X. From railways to highways, ports to airports, India's rapidly expanding infrastructure network is boosting 'Ease of Living' and enhancing prosperity, he said. In another post, Modi said: 'India's push for next-gen infrastructure is powered by sustainability and long-term vision.' It is laying the foundations of a self-reliant India, he said. In a document prepared by the newly launched Press Information Bureau (PIB) Research, the government also pointed to the efficacy of the Pragati (pro-active governance and timely implementation) platform, which was put in place 10 years ago, in fast-tracking of infrastructure projects. It said the most recent meeting of Pragati, which the PM chairs, took place on May 29. This was its 47th meeting since its inception in March 2015. The government said since its launch, over 363 projects have been reviewed under the Pragati initiative, which enables the PM to directly engage with the secretaries of the government and chief secretaries of states via videoconferencing. The government also highlighted the external challenges that it has faced — whether in its response to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism with the Uri surgical strike in 2016, the Balakot air strike of 2019, and Operation Sindoor in 2025 — and how it has dealt with challenges of internal security, such as the threat of Naxalism. In Raipur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the PM's target of uprooting Naxalism by March next year is being fulfilled. In Chhattisgarh, 425 Maoists have been neutralised, 1,443 arrested, 1,388 others have surrendered in the last one-and-a-half years, Sai said. The delimitation of seats and women's reservation will have to be based on the Census-2027 data, and a delimitation commission will have to be set up for the purpose. The Centre, on June 4, announced that the Census will be completed by March 1, 2027, and include enumeration of castes. However, there has been skepticism whether the data would be available in time for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. The provisional data for the 2011 Census was released on March 31, 2011, 25 days after its population enumeration phase ended, while the final data was released two years later on April 30, 2013. However, the government is hopeful of completing the process of delimitation by the 2029 polls since the Census-2027 will be the first digital Census, where enumerators will enter data into apps that it can process in real-time, facilitating quicker publication of datasets.
