Thanks to a scientific phenomenon, distance reduces the noise of the news
Distance is said to lend enchantment to the view, blurring the sight of warts and other eyesores. Distance also lends detachment from the news.
On a visit to London I stay tuned to what's happening back home in India by following the news. There is a familiarity about the news, born out of repetition that makes the word 'news' into an oxymoron, a contradiction in terms.
Perhaps the people in charge of compiling dictionaries should, by deed poll if necessary, officially change the name of news to olds, because much, if not most of it, is the same old, same old.
Opposition is going at govt hammer and tongs. And to return the compliment, govt is going at Opposition tongs and hammer.
Operation Sindoor was/was not an unqualified success. The White House did/did not play the honest – or dishonest – broker in effecting a ceasefire between New Delhi and Islamabad.
Govt, after having opposed a caste-based census all this while, is now in favour of it because it wants to consolidate the so-called Hindu vote/it wants to fragment the Dalit/OBC vote. Ding-dong, dong-ding.
But there's not just a familiarity in the news, there's also a reduction in its noise level, making it sound less frenetic and frenzied the farther off it is. The scientific reason for this is called the Doppler Effect, after the Austrian physicist, Christian Doppler.
The scientist described this phenomenon in 1842, whereby the frequency of sound waves changes as the source of the sound approaches or recedes from the hearer.
The whistle of a train approaching a station sounds increasingly sharper and more shrill, the sound waves getting scrunched together like a squeezed accordion, and gets muted as the train passes and the wavelength becomes longer and flatter, like the wrinkles being ironed out of a shirt.
Distance and flattening wavelengths take much sound out of the fury of the news, and some of the fury out of its sound
For this relief much thanks, Herr Doppler.

UP will generate 20,000 MW of renewable energy by 2027: CM Adityanath

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said that Uttar Pradesh will generate 20 ,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2027. He said this after laying the foundation stone, along with Union minister Jitendra Singh, for a greenfield data centre at Sahibabad. According to an official statement, Adityanath expressed his pleasure at the new data centre being developed by Central Electronics Limited (CEL). "This is a strong step towards the Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's resolution of net zero emissions by 2070," he said. "By 2027, Uttar Pradesh will generate 20,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy, in which CEL's role will be prominent," he added. Adityanath hailed CEL's journey as a symbol of India's industrial resurgence and self-reliance, calling it a "major pillar of Prime Minister Modi's 2047 developed India vision". He emphasised, "Through institutions like CEL, new India is moving forward with its strength, technology, and confidence." The chief minister participated in a ceremonial puja and inaugurated an exhibition at the golden jubilee celebrations of CEL, the statement said. He also planted a sapling as part of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. Referring to Operation Sindoor, Adityanath said, "BrahMos and Akash missiles were recently used against Pakistan. We can say that the capabilities of both these missiles have been tested in Pakistan and trusted in the world." The chief minister linked CEL's growth to the changing landscape of Uttar Pradesh. He said that in the last eight years, Uttar Pradesh's economy has grown two-and-a-half times, six crore people have been lifted out of poverty, and investors are now enthusiastic about investing in the state. He noted, "In 2017, the state was struggling with the image of a 'BIMARU' state, but today it has moved towards becoming the growth engine of the country." He said that out of Rs 50 lakh crore investment proposals, Rs 15 lakh crore worth of investments have been linked to production through ground-breaking ceremonies. During the event, CEL presented a dividend check of approximately Rs 21 crore to the Central government, and an MoU was signed between CEL and Multi Infra for 200 megawatts of solar modules, the statement said. Adityanath described CEL's 50-year journey as a "success story", noting that the institution has now entered 'Amrit Kaal' and is playing a decisive role in realizing Prime Minister Modi's vision of a developed India. The chief minister said, "There was a time when CEL was put on the disinvestment list. But today, it has become a profit-making 'Mini Ratna' company. This transformation is an inspiration for Atmanirbhar Bharat ."
