Flipkart's SVP Ankit Jain likely to join Swiggy Instamart as COO

Time of India14-05-2025

Ankit Jain, senior vice president (SVP) at ecommerce platform
Flipkart
, is likely to join quick commerce firm Swiggy Instamart as chief operating officer (COO), replacing its current SVP and COO, Sairam Krishnamurthy, according to people in the know.
Jain was SVP and head of grocery and large supply chain at Flipkart till now. After working at Flipkart for over five years, Jain will now be working closely with
Swiggy Instamart CEO Amitesh Jha
, who also joined from the Walmart-owned company in August last year.
Prior to Flipkart, Jain worked with Unilever for over 14 years in managerial and leadership roles for its operations in India. According to Jain's LinkedIn profile, his stint at Flipkart ended this month.
Krishnamurthy had joined Swiggy Instamart in August 2024 and was the platform's first COO. He has close to 20 years of experience in leadership roles at FMCG, consumer tech and retail companies such as More Retail, Unilever and
Hindustan Unilever
Limited. It is not clear where Krishnamurthy will be heading next.
Email queries sent to Flipkart and Swiggy did not elicit a response.
The development was first reported by digital news publication Moneycontrol.
Several senior-level exits at Flipkart
Jain, who joined Flipkart in September 2019, is exiting the Walmart-owned e-commerce platform in the wake of many other senior-level exits.
The leadership churn at Flipkart comes at a time when it is attempting to focus on profitability ahead of a planned IPO in 2026.
Flipkart is looking to contain its cash burn and is limiting expansion of its quick commerce business, Minutes, to the top six to eight cities, as reported by ET on May 12.
In February last year, ET had reported on a leadership churn at Flipkart amid its push toward profitability. At the time, travel booking website Cleartrip's head Ayyappan R, marketplace and categories leader Jha, fintech and payments head Dheeraj A, and growth and retention head, Bharath Ram, had exited the company.
Following Jha's move from Flipkart to Swiggy, several other executives at the ecommerce firm jumped to the Bengaluru-based food and grocery delivery platform. These include Shalabh Shrivastava, who joined Swiggy as SVP of driver.org, Hari Kumar G, who joined as SVP and chief business officer for Instamart, and Kanika Tiwari, who joined as the quick commerce platform's head of monetisation after spending eight years at Flipkart.

BMC cancels tender for water rescue vehicles over link to Turkey company

THE BRIHANMUMBAI Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to scrap a tender for acquiring six remote-controlled life buoys or robotic water rescue vehicles after it discovered that the vendor that won the bid to supply it was ultimately sourcing it from a Turkey-based firm. The civic body's move comes amid the recent conflict between India and Pakistan where the latter used drones supplied by Turkey to target India. Confirming the development, a senior BMC official said, 'The tender was floated last year and the shortlisting of bidders took place between January and February. All the bidders had submitted details of their vendors in their quotation. Since India had good ties with Turkey back then, we went ahead to shortlist the vendor. However, owing to the recent tensions, we decided to take a relook at the tender and refloat it.' The official said that while the supplier of the boat-like floating devices was shortlisted, the BMC had not issued any Letter of Approval (LoA) and therefore it had the legal right to roll the tender back. 'We shall be floating a new tender for acquiring the boats and we will also be exploring whether it is possible to have the products manufactured by India-based firms to propagate the Make-in-India campaign. It will also be cost-effective,' said the official. In September last year, the BMC had floated the tender to acquire six rescue boats which were to be used by the Mumbai Fire Brigade for operations in the sea. The cost of each boat was pegged at Rs 9.62 lakh while the total size of the tender was pegged at Rs 64 lakh, inclusive of taxes. Civic officials said that after the bidders submitted their responses, quotations were shortlisted. They said the shortlisted supplier was an Indian vendor who would acquire the product from Turkey based firm Maren Robotics and supply it to the civic body. In the website of Maren Robotics, the boats are branded as 'Maren Fasty — remote controlled and self propelled water rescue vehicle'. Sources said that multiple civic bodies in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have acquired these buoys from the same firm. These boats were to be deployed at the Girgaon, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Gorai and Aksa beaches. Civic officials said that each of these boats would have a carrying capacity of 200 kg while the maximum operating speed would be 18 km per hour —nearly four times more than the manual lifeboats that the civic body uses.

Tesla not interested in manufacturing in India, says Kumaraswamy; government issues guidelines for domestic EV manufacturing

New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): Tesla, the Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle giant, is not interested in manufacturing in India and is keen on opening showrooms, Union Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy said on Monday. The remarks came amid government's push to promote domestic manufacture of passenger cars, with a special focus on electric vehicles (EVs). ' are only to start showrooms. They are not interested in manufacturing in India,' the minister said. Heavy Industry Secretary Kamran Rizvi, however, added 'the real intent we'll know when we open the application'. 'If the company still feels like investing. What the minister sir is telling is about what come and told informally,' he said. The minister added that many European companies like Hyundai, Mercedes Benz, Skoda and Kia have shown interest in manufacturing units in India under the new EV policy. Earlier, there were reports that Tesla was interested in importing Tesla car into India and subsequently sell it through their showrooms in India. Tesla boss Musk had in the past indicated that he was interested in investing in India, but 'high import duty' structures were a bone of contention. Tesla's intention to come into India had intensified after India announced its new EV policy, under which import duty was reduced to 15 per cent and many incentives were provided for setting up manufacturing plant in India. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's father Servotec's Errol Musk, who is in India, appeared keen on Tesla's presence in the country. 'That is something that I have to be careful not to say too much about. Tesla is a public company. It's not you look at India and the population, the kind of people you've got here, the energy and everything and when I hear that, with great respect, BYD and various others are coming in, and Tatas and Mahindra are making great cars, I'm very inclined to say, wait, why aren't we having Teslas here. But I can't say too much. That's just a personal point of view,' he said. He was answering a query about plans for Tesla's presence in India. The central government on Monday notified guidelines for the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India. The central government approved a forward-looking scheme to promote the domestic manufacture of passenger cars, with a special focus on electric vehicles (EVs). The initiative is aligned with India's national goals of achieving net zero by 2070, fostering sustainable mobility, driving economic growth, and reducing environmental impact. It is designed to firmly establish India as a premier global destination for automotive manufacturing and innovation. Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has issued a notification regarding detailed guidelines for the 'Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India' (SPMEPCI / the Scheme)MHI had issued the Scheme notification on March 15 2024. The Department of Revenue also issued the notification on March 15, 2024 for reduced import duties in line with the provisions of the Scheme. The Notice for inviting applications under the Scheme is proposed to be notified shortly, whereby the prospective applicants would be able to submit online applications. The scheme shall help to attract investments from global EV manufacturers and promote India as a manufacturing destination for e-vehicles. The Scheme will also help put India on the global map for manufacturing of EVs, generate employment and achieve the goal of 'Make in India'. To encourage the global manufacturers to invest under the Scheme, the approved applicants will be allowed to import Completely Built-in Units (CBUs) of e-4W with a minimum CIF value of USD 35,000 at reduced customs duty of 15% for a period of 5 years from the Application Approval Date. Approved applicants would be required to make minimum investment of Rs. 4,150 crore in line with the provisions of the scheme. (ANI)
