Trump shuts down proposal to allow Iran's civilian nuclear enrichment

Time of India2 days ago

US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump on Monday seems to have rejected a proposal from his special envoy to Iran that would have allowed Tehran to retain low-level uranium enrichment for civilian purposes.
Trump insisted that any deal to ease US sanctions must require Iran to fully dismantle its nuclear enrichment program.
'Under our potential Agreement — WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY ENRICHMENT OF URANIUM!' Trump posted on social media but there is no clarification whether he was talking about the proposal or not.
Trump's stance appeared to contradict recent efforts by his envoy, Steve Witkoff, who had reportedly offered Iran the option to continue limited enrichment for uses like nuclear medicine and power, in exchange for shutting down its heavily fortified underground sites.
The proposal also included a regional consortium to oversee civilian uranium enrichment, a concept dating back to negotiations around the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
Tehran has denied it is seeking nuclear weapons but has refused to consider any deal that completely ends its enrichment activities. The US and Iran have recently held several rounds of direct nuclear talks, the first in years, as Trump has framed a deal as the best way to avoid military conflict.

The latest proposal reportedly included significant concessions that could provoke strong opposition from Israel and pro-Israel lawmakers in Washington. Trump had sharply criticized the 2015 nuclear agreement and withdrew the US from it in 2017 during his first term.

100 Democrats urge Trump officials to restore deportation relief for Afghans in the US

A group of 100 Democratic lawmakers has urged the Trump administration to reverse its decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans in the US, warning it would endanger thousands of lives by sending them back to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. In a letter addressed to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the lawmakers wrote, 'The grave conditions that forced Afghan nationals to flee and seek refuge in the US following the return of the Taliban to power remain.' They added, 'Forcing Afghan nationals in the US to return to Afghanistan would be reckless and inhumane, and would threaten the safety and well-being of thousands of individuals and families, especially women and girls.' Led by Senator Chris Van Hollen, Senator Amy Klobuchar, and Representative Glenn Ivey, the lawmakers urged the administration to reinstate TPS protections. TPS provides temporary deportation relief and work authorisation for immigrants from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions that prevent safe return. DHS announced in May that it would terminate TPS for Afghans by July 14, arguing that conditions had improved and continued presence was against national interests. Roughly 11,700 Afghans are currently enrolled in TPS, though about 3,600 have secured green cards. The Trump administration has already ended TPS protections for some 350,000 Venezuelans and moved to end the program for thousands of Cameroonians, raising broader concerns about the future of TPS protections for vulnerable immigrant groups.

Elon Musk's Tesla may face zoning violations after over 100 Cybertrucks found parked at closed shopping mall

Representative Image Elon Musk's Tesla may face zoning violations in Michigan after more than 100 unsold Cybertrucks were found parked at a closed shopping centre. The accumulation of these vehicles at Hunter's Square shopping centre in Farmington Hills has prompted concerns from local authorities regarding adherence to zoning regulations, a report claims. Over the past several weeks, residents and social media users have reportedly posted images and videos showing numerous rows of Cybertrucks at the site on Orchard Lake Road. The location is adjacent to a Tesla service centre in West Bloomfield. This proximity has led to speculation that the shopping centre lot is being used as an overflow site to manage unsold inventory, as over 100 Cybertrucks have reportedly gathered in the space. What Tesla and Michigan authorities said about the parked Cybertrucks In a statement to CBS Detroit, Tesla employees collecting the trucks said the property belongs to the same entity that operates the nearby service centre, and that the vehicles were intended for customer delivery. However, the City of Farmington Hills has raised concerns over this explanation. Charmaine Kettler-Schmult, the city's planning and community development director, told CBS Detroit: 'The City of Farmington Hills code enforcement office has been in communication with the Hunter's Square shopping centre management to resolve the issue. They have been notified that storage of vehicles is not a permitted use. The enforcement process is being followed and takes time.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mix 4 Kitchen Ingredients, Wake Up Thinner Every Morning insightcuriositycentral Learn More Undo As per the report, Tesla is struggling to sell its Cybertruck, with under 50,000 units delivered since launch, which is far below its 250,000-unit annual projection. In Q1 2025, only 6,000 units were sold. Inventory has built up to an estimated 10,000 unsold trucks, prompting Tesla to scale back production and shift workers to Model Y lines, the report adds. The vehicle has faced eight recalls, including one affecting nearly all units sold. Sales have also reportedly dipped amid backlash over Elon Musk's political involvement, though Tesla stock has recently rebounded after a sharp decline. Trump Says He Spoke To Putin About Ukraine Drone Attacks: 'Russia Will Respond Strongly'

Last Updated: 'It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace,' Donald Trump noted. US President Donald Trump said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin for over an hour following a Ukrainian drone attack on Russian bombers, as diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine remain stalled. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump said the call lasted approximately one hour and 15 minutes. The two leaders discussed the Ukrainian drone strike on Russian airfields 'and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides." 'It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace," Donald Trump wrote, adding that Vladimir Putin 'very strongly" indicated Russia would respond to the airfield attacks. Iran Features In Trump-Putin Call The discussion covered ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran. Donald Trump said that Vladimir Putin offered to participate in the talks and 'could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion." The US President wrote, 'We also discussed Iran, and the fact that time is running out on Iran's decision pertaining to nuclear weapons, which must be made quickly." Criticising Iran for delaying the deal, Donald Trump said, 'It is my opinion that Iran has been slowwalking their decision on this very important matter, and we will need a definitive answer in a very short period of time!" Wednesday's call was the second between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin since May 19, as the White House continues to advocate for a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Despite recent direct contacts between Russian and Ukrainian officials, a ceasefire remains elusive. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 after massing troops along the border, igniting a war that has now entered its third year.
