Arab-Islamic Committee welcomes statement of leaders of UK, France, and Canada on Gaza aggression

Saudi Gazette21-05-2025

RIYADH — The Ministerial Committee assigned by the Joint Arab-Islamic Extraordinary Summit on Gaza welcomed on Tuesday the joint statement from the leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Canada on the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and the demands to end the war on Gaza and immediately allow access of humanitarian aid to the strip.
The Ministerial Committee shared the opposition expressed by the three leaders to military operations and the continued full-fledged assault against the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza. The committee voiced its grave concern over Israel's continued blockade on humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and called for the immediate and sustainable surge of lifesaving humanitarian aid at scale for Palestinians in need throughout Gaza. The deliberate denial of essential life-saving supplies and the weaponization of humanitarian aid has pushed the population to the brink of famine, it pointed out.
The Ministerial Committee emphasized that Israel's blockade constitutes a violation of the UN Charter and resolutions, treaties, and international humanitarian law. "This exacerbates the man-made catastrophe in the Gaza Strip and poses a serious threat to the security and stability of the region.
Israel should allow and facilitate the entry of humanitarian assistance without impediment from all land routes and crossings along with utilizing air and sea aid delivery to address the catastrophic situation in Gaza," the committee said while emphasizing that no justification can be accepted for starving the Palestinian people in Gaza and depriving them of basic humanitarian aid and needs.
The committee expressed its concern over the Israeli intention to allow 'limited aid flow' to the Gaza Strip and its endorsement of a new aid delivery model which runs counter to humanitarian principles and international law, and is designed to reinforce control over lifesaving and sustaining items as part of a military strategy, as underlined by UN agencies and humanitarian partners. Humanitarian aid must never be politicized or militarized, the committee reiterated while rejecting and condemning Israel's plans to forcibly displace the Palestinian people and annex Palestinian land.
The Ministerial Committee noted that the UN and its humanitarian partners pursued the delivery of aid in line with humanitarian principles across the Strip since 2023, often at the peril of their lives, and supported the system-wide scale-up after the 2025 ceasefire. Despite extreme duress and constant Israeli obstruction, they upheld humanitarian principles and continued their work. It stressed that the United Nations and its humanitarian partners have the capacity and operational systems in place and are ready to act today without delay and in a way that ensures aid is delivered directly to the Palestinian people throughout Gaza and that the most vulnerable are not left behind.
The committee reiterated its demands to the international community to assume its moral and legal responsibilities and to immediately intervene to put pressure on Israel, the occupying power, to immediately lift the blockade, cease its aggression and violations, comply with UN resolutions, international law and international humanitarian law. In light of this, it demanded ensuring swift, sustained, and unimpeded access and provision of humanitarian assistance at scale into and throughout the entire Gaza Strip through the lifting of all restrictions, as well as the immediate restoration of all basic services in the Strip, including the supply of electricity and water desalination plants as well as medical services.
The committee called for ending the Israeli war on Gaza and for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in line with UN resolutions and the full implementation of the ceasefire - hostage/detainees release agreement that went into effect on January 19 and as brokered by Egypt, Qatar and the United States, thus paving the way for the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza, and the implementation of the Arab-Islamic Plan, including convening the Cairo Ministerial Conference on Reconstruction as soon as conditions allow.
The Ministerial Committee also expressed deep concern over the Israeli military incursions in the occupied West Bank, as well as illegal practices such as settlement activities, home demolitions, and settler violence, which undermines the rights of the Palestinian people, threaten the prospects for a just and lasting peace and further entrench the conflict. It recalled that Israel, as an occupying power, must protect civilians and comply with international humanitarian law. The committee firmly rejects any attempts at annexation and unilateral illegal measures that seek to alter the legal and historical status quo of the Holy Sites in Jerusalem.
The Ministerial Committee further reaffirmed full commitment to a political resolution to the conflict that ensures the fulfillment of the rights of the Palestinian people, including the independence of the State of Palestine, and the implementation of the two-state solution with Palestine and Israel, living side by side in peace and security, on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions, the Madrid terms of reference, including the principle of land for peace, and the Arab Peace Initiative, paving the way for lasting peace and coexistence between all the peoples of the region.
The committee reaffirms its commitment in this regard to the convening of a UN High Level International Conference in June in New York, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France to advance these goals.

Israel confirms it is arming Hamas rivals in operation opposition calls ‘complete madness'

TEL AVIV — Israel is arming local militias in Gaza in an effort to counter Hamas in the besieged enclave, officials say, as opposition politicians warned that the move endangers national security. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the covert enterprise on Thursday, calling it 'a good thing.' In a video posted on social media, Netanyahu said Israel had 'activated clans in Gaza which oppose Hamas,' and that it was done 'under the advice of security elements.' Former defense minister and Netanyahu rival Avigdor Liberman divulged the move on Israel's Ch. 12 News on Wednesday, saying that Israel was distributing rifles to extremist groups in Gaza and describing the operation as 'complete madness.' 'We're talking about the equivalent of ISIS in Gaza,' Liberman said one day later on Israel's Army Radio, adding that Israel is providing weapons to 'crime families in Gaza on Netanyahu's orders.' 'No one can guarantee that these weapons will not be directed towards Israel,' he said, a warning echoed by one of the officials who spoke with CNN. After Liberman's revelation, the Prime Minister's Office issued a statement saying, 'Israel is acting to defeat Hamas in various ways upon the recommendation of the heads of the security establishment.' The ongoing operation was authorized by Netanyahu without security cabinet approval, two officials told CNN, which is the normal forum for making major policy decisions. Netanyahu's far-right coalition partners would likely have vetoed such a Hamas said the plan revealed 'a grave and undeniable truth.' In a statement, the militant group said: 'The Israeli occupation army is arming criminal gangs in the Gaza Strip with the aim of creating a state of insecurity and social chaos.'One group that has received weapons from Israel is the militia led by Yasser Abu Shabab, officials said. Abu Shabab heads an armed group that controls some territory in eastern Rafah and he has posted photos of himself holding an AK-47 rifle with UN vehicles behind him. Though Abu Shabab has denied receiving weapons from Israel, Hamas has accused him of being a 'traitor.''We pledge before God to continue confronting the dens of that criminal and his gang, no matter the cost of the sacrifices we make,' Hamas said on politicians ripped Netanyahu for the plan to arm militias and the secrecy around it, lambasting it as a continuation of the Israeli leader's decision to allow millions of dollars in cash to travel from Qatar to Gaza beginning in late 2018. They accused him of strengthening Hamas in the past as an alternative to the rival Palestinian Fatah faction, and now arming gangs as an alternative to Hamas.'After Netanyahu finished handing over millions of dollars to Hamas, he moved on to supplying weapons to groups in Gaza affiliated with ISIS – all improvised, with no strategic planning, and all leading to more disasters,' opposition leader Yair Lapid said on social has not laid out a plan for who will govern Gaza in the future and has hardly made clear any of his post-war intentions for the coastal enclave. Part of Israel's war goals include the complete disarmament of Hamas and the end of its ability to govern in the arming of militias in Gaza appears to be the closest that Netanyahu has come to empowering any form of alternate nearly 20 months of war, Israel has not been able to dislodge Hamas completely from large swaths of Gaza, and the militant group – classified as a terrorist organization in Israel, the United States, and the European Union – has clung to Golan, head of the left-wing Democrats party, said in a post on social media: 'Instead of bringing about a deal, making arrangements with the moderate Sunni axis, and returning the hostages and security to Israeli citizens, he is creating a new ticking bomb in Gaza.' — CNN

Brazilian President Describes Israel War on Gaza as ‘Premeditated Genocide'

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday condemned Israeli war on Gaza and called it a 'premeditated genocide,' during his visit to Paris, according to Al-Jazeera. Premeditated Genocide Lula noted that the Israeli military campaign had killed at least 52 people in its latest attack on Gaza. 'This is not a war. It is genocide. A genocide being carried out by a highly trained army, against women and children' Lula said at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 54,500 Palestinians and wounded more than 119,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. '[It is] a premeditated genocide from a far-right government that is waging a war, including against the interests of its own people,' he said. This was not the first time for Lulu to use the term 'genocide' to describe Israel's actions in Gaza. However, Macron has reserved his opinion, stating in May that it was not for a 'political leader to use the term, but up to historians to do so when the time comes'. France and Saudi Arabia are set to co-chair an international conference this month at the UN in order to deeply consider a two-state solution. Meanwhile, Paris has unveiled that it could formally recognize a Palestinian state this year. Harsh Attack on Macron In May, Israel accused French President Emmanuel Macron of undertaking a 'crusade against the Jewish state.' The Israeli statement came after Macron's call for European countries to toughen up their stance on Israel if the humanitarian situation in Gaza did not improve. New Settlements Israel recently announced the creation of 22 new settlements in the West Bank. Consequently, Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Israel planned to build a 'Jewish Israeli state' in the occupied West Bank. 'This is a decisive response to the terrorist organizations that are trying to harm and weaken our hold on this land,' Katz said. Katz also noted that the new settlements would be a clear message to French President Emmanuel Macron and his associates: they will recognize a Palestinian state on paper – but Israel will build the Jewish Israeli state here on the ground. New Suggestion Last week, the US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has attacked France's call for recognizing the Palestinian state, stating that if it adopted such an outcome, it could 'carve out a piece of the French Riviera' and create one, according to Al-Arabiya. 'If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I've got a suggestion for them — carve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state. They are welcome to do that, but they are not welcome to impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation,' Huckabee said. Pakistan condemns Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon on eve of Eid Al-Adha

ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan on Friday 'unequivocally' condemned airstrikes by Israeli forces on Beirut's suburbs and parts of southern Lebanon on the eve of the Eid Al-Adha religious holiday, the foreign office said. Israeli air strikes pummelled the southern suburbs of Lebanon's capital late on Thursday, sending thousands of people fleeing on the eve of the Muslim feast day and prompting accusations by top Lebanese officials that Israel was violating a ceasefire deal. At least 10 strikes hit Beirut's southern suburbs — a sprawling area known as Dahiyeh — in a wave of bombing that began about 90 minutes after the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings for four sites in the area. It was the fourth time that Dahiyeh has been bombed since a US-brokered truce in November ended a year-long war between Israel and Iran-backed Lebanese armed movement Hezbollah. 'These attacks, launched on the eve of Eid Al-Adha, constitute a blatant violation of international law, sovereignty of Lebanon, and the ceasefire agreement of November 2024,' the Pakistani foreign office said. 'The reckless use of force threatens civilian lives, fuels regional instability, and undermines efforts for lasting peace.' Pakistan urged the international community, particularly the United Nations and ceasefire mediators, to take 'immediate action to hold Israeli occupying forces accountable and prevent further escalation.' The Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire says Hezbollah must pull all military equipment and fighters out of southern Lebanon and says all non-state militant groups must be disarmed across the country. The Israeli military said on Thursday it was planning to strike 'underground UAV production infrastructure sites that were deliberately established in the heart of the civilian population' in Dahiyeh. It said Hezbollah was producing thousands of drones there, 'with the direction and funding of Iranian terrorists.' There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah, which in the past has denied placing military infrastructure in civilian areas. Israeli strikes also hit the southern Lebanese village of Ain Qana, according to Lebanese state media, shortly after evacuation warnings were issued for the area. The attacks occurred as the Muslim holiday Eid Al-Adha was due to begin on Thursday. The strikes 'generated renewed panic and fear on the eve of Eid Al-Adha,' the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon said on X. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam both condemned the attacks as a 'blatant violation' of international agreements. With inputs from Reuters
