DA leader Helen Zille admitted she had no idea what a comedy roast was when she was first approached about becoming the next celebrity to be roasted on Showmax.
'When I told my sons, they said, 'Ma, do you even know what a Roast is?' And I had to admit, 'No, I don't. What is it?' They were like, 'Ma, are you crazy? You're putting yourself out there for a toasting! You're going to be chewed up.' I said, 'That's fine. I get chewed up every day,' said Zille, narrating how her two sons took the news of her being roasted.
The Showmax Roast of Helen Zille premieres this Friday on Showmax, and Zille spoke to the media about participating in the show, which is premised on a celebrity being made fun of by other celebrities.
In 2024, media personality Minnie Dlamini was roasted.
Zille's roast featured former Comics Choice Comic of the Year Loyiso Gola, media personalities Bongani Bingwa, JJ Tabane and Rian van Heerden, reality TV stars Londie London and Mel Viljoen.
Zille admits that when Showmax approached her about the roast, she thought she was invited for lunch. 'They said, 'Do you want to do a Roast?' and I thought, 'That's like a Sunday lunch – sure!'

Zille not taking herself too seriously
The controversial politician said she took part because she wanted to show her grandchildren that she could have fun and not take herself too seriously.
'I have this image of being such a fierce and terrible person — someone unable to take a joke – and of course, that's not true. I'd like them [grandkids] to know a bit more about the real me, all the different sides. Especially the fact that we need to be able to laugh at ourselves.'
Speaking about some of the celebrities who participated in the roast, Zille said she found them interesting and that they are 'good at what they do.'
However, she is honest about not knowing the reality TV personalities London and Viljoen.
'The only people I have no clue about are The Real Housewives – Mel Viljoen and Londie London. I don't know if they're from Desperate Housewives or The Real Housewives,' said Zille.
'I know nothing about that world, so that'll be new for me. But the rest I know, and I think they'll handle this kind of exchange well.'
The Showmax Roast of Helen Zille was part of the Laugh Africa Comedy Festival at the Sandton Convention Centre in early May.

African animated series 'Iyanu' set for Showmax debut this June

The groundbreaking Nigerian animated series Iyanu will premiere on Showmax across 44 African countries on Friday, 13 June. The release is perfectly timed for Father's Day and the school holidays. This thrilling series draws deeply from Nigerian culture, music, and mythology. THE STORY OF 'IYANU' It tells the story of a teenage orphan who discovers her divine powers and her destiny to save the ancient kingdom of Yorubaland. Iyanu follows its courageous heroine as she navigates a magical world steeped in Yoruba traditions. While yearning for a normal life, Iyanu's world turns upside down when a looming threat awakens powers. These powers have been unseen since the legendary Age of Wonders, according to Shomax Stories. Accompanied by her friends Biyi, Toye, and a magical leopard named Ekun, she embarks on an epic quest to uncover the source of evil and save her people. The series is adapted from Roye Okupe's acclaimed graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder , published by YouNeek Studios and Dark Horse Comics. This is the same powerhouse behind The Umbrella Academy and Hellboy . Roye Okupe, born and raised in Nigeria, serves as creator, executive producer, and showrunner. He said, 'One of the reasons I started YouNeek Studios and created Iyanu is because I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, watching superhero stories on DStv. To now see Iyanu launching on Showmax across 44 African countries is truly a full-circle moment. I'm beyond thrilled that kids, adults, and families across the continent will get to see a superhero who looks, sounds, and feels like them'. Produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, the Emmy-winning studio behind the Oscar®-winning Hair Love , Iyanu boasts an all-African voice cast. The voice cast is led by award-winning Serah Johnson as Iyanu. The cast also features African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) winner and Vogue US cover star Adesua Etomi-Wellington. Three-time AMAA nominee Stella Damasus, multi-award-winning Blossom Chukwujekwu, and Shaffy Bello, known for The Black Book, also join. Nigerian Grammy nominee Yemi Alade lends her voice to the theme song, expressing her pride. 'Iyanu showcases the resilience, the beauty and the strength of our culture. Growing up, I always hoped to watch cartoons with characters that looked and sounded like me. Right now, it's happening, and I'm really happy to be part of it'. Since its US debut in April 2025, Iyanu soared to become the #1 series on Cartoon Network. The show was ranked in the top 10 kids and family series on Max. It has already been greenlit for a second season and two linked feature films. Screenrant praised it as 'The Last Airbender and Black Panther hybrid you didn't know you needed,' highlighting its unique blend of fantasy and African heritage. Dr Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of General Entertainment at MultiChoice, remarked, ' Iyanu brings Nigerian culture and mythology to life excitingly and authentically. We are proud to be the home of its African premiere. I can't wait for audiences across the continent to experience this epic adventure on Showmax.' This launch marks a significant milestone for African animation. The show joins the ranks of other award-winning productions like Tabby McTat and The Smeds and The Smoos . These shows are also available on Showmax. Iyanu offers a fresh and vibrant superhero tale that resonates with African identity and pride. It's a chance to see a hero who looks like us, speaks to our cultures, and celebrates our stories. With its captivating animation, rich storytelling, and all-star African cast, Iyanu promises to be a must-watch hit this June on Showmax. Nonku Williams leaves 'The Real Housewives of Durban'

In a shocking and unexpected announcement, Nonku Williams, the longest-serving housewife in Africa, has exited ' The Real Housewives of Durban (RHOD) .' The reality star rose to fame through the show after joining its first season, quickly becoming a household name with a loyal fan base. After entertaining fans for five seasons on the Showmax hit The Real Housewives of Durban, Nonku Williams has officially left the show. She announced her exit in an emotional and detailed post on her Instagram account. The reality star shared that she is stepping away from the franchise to prioritise her mental health, well-being, and personal growth. She also revealed that she won't be attending the reunion, disappointing many viewers who were expecting her to show up. They wanted her to take accountability for her actions this season and address questions about her character. Nonku has stirred controversy this season, with many viewers expressing disappointment in her behaviour. While some still believe she's reality TV gold, bringing the sass and drama that helped make the show a success, it seems she didn't win many hearts this time. The mother of two revealed that after watching herself on TV, she has realised that the woman she sees is not someone she recognises or respects. 'After much reflection, I've made the difficult decision not to return to the show and to distance myself from the reunion. It's not an easy choice, but it's one I must make. Watching myself on screen, I'm confronted with a reality that's hard to accept. The woman I see isn't someone I recognise or respect.' Reflecting on her journey with the show, she shared that the toxic cycle of women being pitted against each other, constant negativity, conflict, and drama no longer aligns with who she wants to be. She said it's time to choose peace and personal growth. 'I've played a role in shaping this narrative, but I'm also a product of the show's dynamics. The relentless pursuit of drama, the pitting of women against each other, the gossip, and the put-downs – it's a toxic cycle that wears me down,' she wrote. Nonku further opened up about her decision to walk away from the show, sharing: 'As I look to the future, I'm reminded of my responsibilities – to myself, my children, my faith, and the community. I want to make a difference, to leave a positive mark on the world. But this show, with its destructive tendencies, isn't the platform for that. I've come to realise that I have a responsibility to myself to prioritise my well-being, to protect my mental health, and to surround myself with positivity.' She further said that she chooses this to be a better role model for her kids and to positively impact her community. 'To those who've supported me throughout this journey, I'm grateful. I acknowledge my part in the chaos, but I also recognise the show's role in shaping our narratives. I'm choosing to break free from this cycle, to seek a path that uplifts and inspires. She further said, 'I'm choosing to use my platform to spread love, kindness, and positivity. I'm choosing to be a role model for my children and for others who may be watching. I'm choosing to prioritise my well-being and to take care of myself,' she said. ARE YOU GOING TO MISS NONKU ON RHODURBAN? Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 .
