How one Google Photos feature is saving my photo library from chaos

As a Google Photos user for over 10 years, with thousands of photos in my library, it's safe to say that things often get chaotic. I regularly delete unwanted photos and try to organize them into albums, but even then, managing a library this large can still be a massive undertaking.
One of the biggest issues I have is with my main Photos page often looking horribly messy. I'm someone who takes a lot of similar pictures, whether of my pets, partner, a sunset, etc. I like having multiple angles/shots to capture a moment, and while it's great for looking back on those memories, it also means my gallery of pictures is crowded with countless similar-looking photos.
Thankfully, Google has rolled out a new feature to make this a thing of the past. A new 'manual stack' feature recently appeared on my Google Photos app, and it's quickly made my photo library more organized than ever before.

Manual photo stacks are exactly what I needed

In November 2023, Google Photos got 'Photo stacks' for the first time. If Google detects that you have multiple similar photos taken around the same time, they're automatically grouped into a stack. You can tap on the stack to see all of the individual shots, and it means that instead of having five spots of your home page taken up by five similar-looking images, you see just one with a stack icon.
Since photo stacks rolled out almost two years ago, they've become one of my favorite features in Google Photos — but there's been just one problem. On multiple occasions, I've had a handful of similar pictures that weren't stacked together, forcing me to decide whether to let my library stay looking cluttered or to delete some 'unnecessary' pictures to keep things tidy.
Thankfully, Google's new manual stacking option solves this. While photo stacks are still automatically created in the background for you, you've now also got the option to create them yourself. If you select two or more images in Google Photos, you can tap a new 'Stack photos' button to bundle them in a new stack.
If you're someone who takes one picture of something and calls it a day, this probably doesn't matter all that much. But as a self-proclaimed over-taker of photos, manual stacks have been a godsend.

Take these two pictures of my dog, Damon, as an example. Both of them are adorable, and as similar as they may be, I don't want to get rid of either one. At the same time, I don't need to see both of them on the homepage. And now, I don't! Since I can manually stack the photos, I get to save each one while reducing library clutter.
Here's an even better example. I took a lot of photos during a recent show at a local brewery. Google Photos automatically stacked some shots, but it wasn't perfect. It left some photos entirely unstacked, while four photos taken in rapid succession were strangely split up into two stacks of two.

Previously, I would have had to make do with this. However, manually stacking allows me to clean things up significantly. Now, instead of seven photos taking up five spots in my library, the same number of shots is reduced to just two squares.
Saving one or two gallery spots here and there may not seem like much, but done multiple times over, it quickly adds up. I get to keep all of the pictures I want, my Photos app is more organized than ever before, and not seeing countless similar shots while scrolling through my library makes my brain happy.

My one and only issue with manual stacking is its limited availability. The feature has been live on the Photos app on my iPhone for at least a couple of weeks, but it's still nowhere to be found on the Google Photos desktop site or Android app. There's evidence that this will change (hopefully) sometime soon, but for now, it's an iOS-only feature.
Even with the iPhone exclusivity, though, manual stacking has still been a game changer. As small a feature as it may seem on paper, it's made my Google Photos library look better than ever, and I already can't imagine not having it.

In April, the company posted first-quarter revenue of $90.23 billion, topping Wall Street expectations. Earnings per share came in at $2.81, far above the forecasted $2.01. Its "Search and other" segment rose almost 10% year over year, hitting $50.7 billion. Meanwhile, Google's own AI tools are starting to show traction. AI Overviews now has 1.5 billion users per month, up from 1 billion in October, the company said. So far, the numbers suggest that AI isn't cannibalizing Google's business yet. Bank of America remains bullish on Alphabet stock. The firm reiterated a buy rating and a price target of $200, which implies a potential 15% upside from current levels, according to a recent research report. The firm said in May, Google's global average daily web visits held steady at 2.7 billion, unchanged from the previous month and down 2% from a year earlier. ChatGPT, meanwhile, saw a 3% month-over-month increase to 182 million, marking a 105% jump year-over-year. Although Google has highlighted the growing reach of its AI Overviews, analysts are uncertain whether it's translating into more traffic. "So far, we are not seeing a lift in Google traffic from AI Overviews expansion, though we think the search experience is much improved," the analysts wrote. The competition is real. Google's global search share also edged down in May, falling 8 basis points month-over-month and 123 basis points year-over-year to 89.6%, according to Statcounter. Still, Bank of America analysts remain optimistic on Alphabet stock. "While ChatGPT's traffic continues to grow rapidly, we think Google remains well-positioned given its scale, multi-product reach, data assets, and robust monetization infrastructure," the analysts said. "AI can expand overall search monetization by better understanding the intent behind complex and long-tail queries that were previously hard to monetize," they added. Morningstar's Malik Ahmed Khan echoed that sentiment, saying Alphabet's diverse revenue streams and global exposure should cushion any hits, even as regulatory and AI risks mount, according to a May research report. Alphabet stock closed at $174.92 on June 6. The stock is down 8% year-to-date. If you're looking to get a good projector, but also want to optimize the value per dollar you spend on it, the Yaber T2 is my personal favorite option. In fact, this is the one I use. I spent my own money on it, too. I can tell you I am more than happy with the investment. You don't have to trust me alone, though. My co-worker Kaitlin also gave it a great review! One of its main advantages is that it is actually portable. Many competitors claim portability, referring only to the small design, but they need to be plugged in to work. The Yaber T2 has a built-in battery that can run the projector for about 2.5 hours. These speakers are a nice addition, because you can actually use the projector as a Bluetooth speaker, too. In audio-only mode, the battery life extends to 18 hours. If I had a request, it's that I wish it had a smart TV OS built in. But of course, the price of this projector is really low, so there had to be some sacrifices made. And if you want, Yaber also sells a Google TV dongle separately. Otherwise, you can resort to using mirroring or the HDMI port. XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro Portable Projector XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro See price at Amazon Save $90.00 Limited Time Deal! If you don't mind paying $120 more, here's a nice option from XGIMI. The XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro has a smaller cylindrical design that is easier to carry around. It measures just 204.9 x 95 x 95mm. This one also projects a 1,080p image and features a 450-lumen brightness. It can also project at up to 120 inches. It's a bit better, though. It can display 90% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, making it pretty color accurate. It's also really nice that it comes with Google TV built in! You'll get access to your favorite apps from the Google Play Store, and it supports casting. These speakers are powered by Harman Kardon, but the output is lower at 5W. The one downside with the XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro is that it has no battery, so it needs to be plugged in to work. That said, it can run off a power bank as long as it can output 65W. Anker Nebula Capsule 3 GTV Outdoor Projector Anker NEBULA Capsule 3 Projector Anker NEBULA Capsule 3 Projector See price at Amazon Save $150.00 Limited Time Deal! Anker is probably the more established brand in the world of portable projectors. The brand makes great little projectors, and the Anker Nebula Capsule 3 is an industry favorite. It's a bit pricier than the two options above, but $379.99 is still a great price for what you're getting. It's also really small at 3.15 x 3.15 x 6.30in. You can easily fit it in most bags, or even a larger pocket. And unlike the XGIMI option, this one actually has an integrated battery. It can run the projector for up to 2.5 hours. This one also has Google TV. You can install and run your favorite streaming apps, all available from the Google Play Store. It also has Google Cast support. You'll need a Wi-Fi connection, or you could just use your phone's hotspot feature. Specs are pretty good, as well. It can project at Full HD, as large as 120 inches. It has 200 lumens of brightness, which isn't as good as the other options, but it will offer a pleasant experience in a darker room. It also has a built-in 8W speaker. While we aren't happy to see some sacrifices, we understand that making a smaller, more portable unit with all the bells and whistles requires some sacrifices. XGIMI Horizon Pro 4K Projector Let's take things up a notch. We know many of you want a high-end experience, and if you want it to come from a projector, here's a fantastic deal for you. It is still pricey at $769.99, but this one's retail price is a whopping $1,699! This is a high-end model that will offer a premium experience. As its name implies, the XGIMI Horizon Pro 4K has a 4K resolution. It's also super bright, offering a brightness of 1,500 lumens. You can expand the image up to 150 inches, too, which is enormous. This one comes with Android TV, which gives users access to the Google Play Store and its immense portfolio of apps. It also still supports Google Cast. This projector, while not huge, isn't really portable. As such, it needs to be plugged in. It offers a way superior viewing experience, though. Regardless of which projector you pick, you might want to act quickly. Some of these are record-low prices, and these discounts can disappear at any point.
