ATP roundup: Novak Djokovic gets milestone 100th win with Geneva victory

Novak Djokovic became the third man in the Open Era to reach 100 career wins, surviving a three-set thriller against Poland's Hubert Hurkacz at the Gonet Geneva Open in Switzerland in Saturday.
The Serbian great, seeded second, needed three hours and five minutes to turn back the sixth-seeded Hurkacz 5-7, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) and win at the clay-court ATP 250 event. Djokovic was down 2-4 in the final set but a break of Hurkacz in the eighth game got the match back on serve.
Djokovic prevailed despite 52 winners by Hurkacz, which included 19 aces.
He now joins the elite group of Jimmy Connors (109 wins) and Roger Federer (103) to hit the century mark. It has been almost 20 years since the 38-year-old won his first tournament, a 2006 victory at Amersfoort in the Netherlands.
This was Djokovic's first title since winning the Paris Olympics in 2024, and he now has a victory in a record 20 different seasons. He will be going for his 25th Grand Slam title at the French Open, which begins Sunday in Paris. His first-round opponent is American Mackenzie Mcdonald.
Bitpanda Hamburg Open
Flavio Cobolli of Italy won his second career title, defeating third-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia 6-2, 6-4 in Hamburg, Germany.
In the 90-minute match, Cobolli breezed through the first set in 29 minutes. In the second set, serving for the win at 5-4, Cobolli fended off two match points on the way to the win. He saved six of seven break points on the day, while converting all four of his break chances on Rublev's serve.
Rublev, a former Hamburg champion, hit just 10 winners against 23 unforced errors. Cobolli had 25 and 24, respectively.
Cobolli won his first title in April in Bucharest, another tournament on clay.

Cricket-Stead stands down as New Zealand coach after seven years

The 53-year-old stood down as coach of the country's white ball teams in April and his desire to spend less time on tour ultimately did not marry with NZC's aspiration to have one coach across all formats. "There's been some amazing memories over the past seven years based around a group of fantastic and talented people who have gone out to give their best for their country," he said in a NZC statement. "It's been nice to be competitive across all three formats and I'd like to think that regardless of results, the opposition know the Black Caps are a team that won't fold." Stead said the World Test Championship triumph in 2021 and New Zealand's 3-0 sweep of India on the sub-continent last year were the highlights of his time in charge. New Zealand also finished as runners-up on boundary countback at the 2019 50-overs World Cup, runners-up at the 2021 Twenty20 World Cup as well as at the Champions Trophy earlier this year. The Black Caps topped the test and ODI rankings and reached the semi-finals at two other white-ball World Cups during his time in charge. "For a country with five million people and limited resources, we comparatively perform outstandingly well against the other powerhouses of the game," Stead consistent performances over such a lengthy period rested in some part on Stead's ability to refresh the squad with young players as generational talents retired or spent lengthy periods on the sidelines with injury. Former Black Caps captain Kane Williamson said Stead is likely to be remembered as one of New Zealand's most successful cricket coaches. "There was no one more hardworking and passionate about seeing the Black Caps grow and succeed," he said. "He was always thorough in his planning and preparation and will go down as one of our best coaches, but an even better bloke." NZC have already started the search for the successor to the former top-order test batsman and Stead said he would take some time to recharge before seeking out another challenge. "I still have the coaching bug and will look to explore opportunities at home and abroad where I can look to share what I've learned from my 30 years of professional sport as a player and coach," he said. "After being in the England team since the age of 21, it's time to close that chapter of my life. I never wanted this day to come, but I cannot tell you how proud I am that it happened," Kirby said in a statement on social media. Kirby joined the national team at the age of 21 and her last appearance came as a second-half substitute in last week's 6-0 win over Portugal.
