Milwaukee teenager killed was mother to seven-month-old: 'Zaniya was a beautiful soul'

Yahoo27-01-2025

At 17, Zaniya Booker had proudly taken on the role of parent to her own daughter and aspired to graduate high school in the next year. In the years that would follow, she was excited to possibly become a hairstylist and continue to raise her child.
But tragedy struck last week, when Booker was shot and killed on Wednesday on the 4400 block of North 28th Street in Milwaukee. Police said Monday they continued to seek a known suspect.
"Zaniya was a beautiful soul," her father Demetrius James said.
James described his daughter as a "people person" and "the biggest helper" he'd ever seen. Her aunt Dominque James, 40, said the teenager loved to spend time with family and friends, and enjoyed shopping and cooking as well.
She had a knack for content creation, especially on TikTok, and her other hobbies kept her out of trouble, he said.
Her main goal, however, was to finish high school in the next year, so she could focus on being a mother, Demetrius said. That's emblematic of the way she handled being a mother, as her aunt said she took the responsibility of being a mother seriously.
"That was her baby, that was her life," her aunt said. "She was an awesome mother to that baby."
The death comes at an already trying time for the family. Booker's mother suffered a stroke recently and has left James, 40, as her sole caretaker, leading to him leaving his job to do so.
Booker helped without complaint in caring for her mother, Demetrius said.
With his daughter's death, he's taken custody of his granddaughter and has a newborn child of his own as well.
"I'm trying to get through this the best I can," Demetrius said. "I just want to share my daughter's story."
Booker is among the seven reported homicides in Milwaukee so far in 2025, according to police data. The same day she was killed, a triple shooting killed a 22-year-old woman as well.
A GoFundMe for the Booker family can be found here.

Khaby Lame Was Detained by ICE, Agency Confirms

Let's cut to the chase. Yes, the world's top TikToker Khaby Lame was detained by ICE, the agency confirmed on June 7. 'U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Seringe Khabane Lame, 25, a citizen of Italy, June 6, at the Harry Reid International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada for immigration violations,' ICE confirmed to Men's Journal in an emailed statement after Men's Journal asked whether it was true that ICE had arrested the popular TIkToker. 'Lame entered the United States April 30 and overstayed the terms of his visa. Lame was granted voluntary departure June 6 and has since departed the U.S.,' ICE wrote. That news came after confusion erupted because Lame is not in the ICE arrest database. Furthermore, he's been posting on Instagram and on TikTok since the rumor went viral, including in a bookstore. Men's Journal asked ICE public relations about the viral and unverified rumor that Lame was arrested, which started on the X page of a social media influencer named Bo Louden. A spokeswoman for ICE, Alethea Smock, told Men's Journal on the evening of June 6 that she was looking into it, and the agency responded with the statement on June 7. On June 7, Lame posted several times to his Instagram story, including a post in a bookstore, holding a book. He also wished a top athlete a happy birthday. The moral of the story is to not instantly believe everything you read on the Internet. Furthermore, X's Grok was already warning on June 6 that the rumor was likely false. And Lame posted this video on TikTok on June 7: In a June 6, 2025, post, Louden alleged that Lame - who has more than 162 million followers on TikTok - was arrested by ICE in Nevada and is in custody, and he shared a supposed ICE database screenshot in the name of Serigne Khabane Lame of Senegal. The post then ricocheted around social media and was viewed hundreds of thousands of times. A community note was quickly attached to his post. "Khaby Lame is still living in Italy, and was granted citizenship there in 2022. ICE is a U.S.-based organization and cannot deport someone not living in the USA," it read. But here's the thing. When you try it yourself, you get zero results. No evidence of Khaby Lame, Khabane Lame, or Serigne Khabane Lame being in ICE custody (as the screenshot lists). Nothing. Zero results come up also when you put the supposed A-Number from the screenshot into the database. In other words, the screenshot is impossible to replicate. That's likely because Lame was allowed to voluntarily leave the country, though, per the new statement. On Louden's comment thread on X, other people wrote that they also got no results when they tried to replicate it in the official database, and they accused him of perpetrating a hoax. Lame is an Italian citizen. Furthermore, Italian citizens do not need a visa to be in the United States for up to 90 days. KRON4 confirmed that Khaby Lame was born in Senegal. He is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. "Lame moved to Italy from his native Senegal when he was an infant with his working class parents, but was only granted Italian citizenship when he was 20," that site reported. In 2024, he starred in a show about trying to find a new home in the U.S. In early May, Lame was photographed attending the Met Gala in New York. 22-Year-Old Woman Tragically Loses Legs Following Freak Accident In The Bahamas

A young woman celebrating her summa cum laude college graduation experienced a traumatic freak accident in The Bahamas that resulted in her legs being severed. When the boating incident occurred on May 12, Hannah Smith, 22, was allegedly on the first day of her trip. According to the Daily Mail, she and a friend, Brooklyn Pitre, were on a celebratory Carnival Sunrise cruise after graduating. The two were returning to the ship via a pontoon ferry after doing off-ship excursions. As the small boat docked around 3:55 p.m. at Nassau Cruise Port, Hannah found herself in the water. The ferry's propellers reportedly dragged the young woman under the water, then partially severed her legs and surrounded her in blood. Two of the boat's female passengers were able to pull Hannah out of the water, and she went to a local hospital. Two days later, the Memphis, Tennessee, native was transferred to a hospital back in the United States for emergency surgery. Updates provided by her family (shared on GoFundMe) note that Hannah has undergone over 10 surgeries in the two and a half weeks following the boating incident. Though she suffered some medical setbacks and doctors performed extensive procedures, the recent graduate has been pulling through. It remains unclear how exactly Hannah ended up in the water, as sources differ. The pontoon ferry's captain allegedly told local authorities that Hannah jumped into the water. Police claim that alcohol consumption possibly played a role in the tragic incident. However, the recent graduate's parents, Tracy and Marvin Smith, deny that their daughter was inebriated. The recent graduate and Delta Sigma Theta sorority member studied communications and graphic design at Miles College, a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) institution in Alabama. A family member has created a GoFundMe to aid Hannah with her medical costs and recovery. At the beginning of the fundraiser's description, it describes Hannah as a young woman who is 'love' and 'light.' 'This boating accident will not define your life,' declared Hannah's family member in the GoFundMe's description. 'We need you to have many more birthdays, more holidays, more life experiences… While on what was supposed to be a beautiful trip to the Bahamas, Hannah was involved in a tragic accident that nearly claimed her life. Through the grace of God, she's still with us, but the road ahead is long, filled with surgeries, recovery, and overwhelming medical costs.' As of this reporting, the fundraiser has received over 1,200 donations. It's currently at over $50,500 of its $250,000 goal. A May 29 update on Hannah's well-being said, 'This journey is taking a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual toll. Please keep her lifted in your thoughts and prayers. She is fighting!!!' In late March, the State Department updated its travel advisory for Americans traveling to The Bahamas. The alert included a notice regarding crime, swimming-related risks, and traveling with firearms and ammunition on the Caribbean post 22-Year-Old Woman Tragically Loses Legs Following Freak Accident In The Bahamas appeared first on Travel Noire.
