De Beers pushes for zero-tariff entry of cut and polished Indian diamonds into US
De Beers
Group is working with the Indian government to create a
zero-tariff policy
for diamonds entering the United States after being cut and polished in India. The group has already met with commerce and industry minister
Piyush Goyal
and urged him to speak with his US counterpart to enable the 'free flow of diamonds'.
Al Cook, CEO of De Beers Group, told ToI that 90% of diamonds are exported from India, and it is vital for the country to finalise a deal before 9 July. 'Britain and India seem to be doing very good jobs on working with tariff deals with the US. I am very confident that India will reach a deal ahead of July 9. We have already seen a deal in the UK,' he said.
Cook mentioned that apart from India and the US, most of the world allows the 'free flow of natural diamonds', as these are produced only in a few places globally, mostly in Africa. Since diamonds are mined in the US and then cut and polished in India, a zero-duty entry into the American market would not lead to any job losses, he said. 'We don't think there should be a tax on love,' the De Beers CEO said.
Cook also spoke of changing trends in the diamond trade. He said that earlier, the focus used to be on diamonds 'from India' and 'by India', but now it is shifting to 'for India' and 'to India', referring to the growing demand within the country. India is now the second-largest market for
natural diamonds
in the world.
The British-born CEO said that the Indian natural diamond market is set to double to $20 billion by 2030, up from $10 billion at present. He said this growth is driven by rising aspirations among Indian buyers. According to him, India's natural diamond consumption rose by 12% year-on-year in 2024.

Natural diamond still India's crown jewel: De Beers Group CEO
Commenting on the growing division between natural and
lab-grown diamonds
(LGDs), Cook said that with LGD wholesale value falling below $60 per carat, the importance of diamond testing technology has gone up. He said that India, which has overtaken China as the world's second-largest natural diamond market, is becoming more valuable to De Beers.
Cook said Indian consumers, unlike their US counterparts, are not shifting in large numbers towards LGDs. 'One can buy 20 LGDs for the price of 1 carat of natural diamond,' he told ET. He added that LGDs will continue to be 'mass-produced, low-cost, pretty and fun jewellery to wear.' He said Indian buyers prefer natural diamonds because they value uniqueness. 'Indian consumers are more sophisticated, and they like natural things. They believe in the uniqueness of natural diamonds and therefore the demand is growing,' he said.
De Beers recently closed its LGD jewellery brand Lightbox, which was launched in 2018. This move reflects the group's renewed focus on natural diamonds. Meanwhile, prices of some grades of rough diamonds are going up due to tight supply in the market.

IndiGo Places Order For Another 30 Wide-Body A350 Aircraft With Airbus
New Delhi: Low-cost airline IndiGo on Sunday announced an MoU with Airbus to enlarge its wide-body aircraft order by converting 30 aircraft of its purchase rights for 70 aircraft into a firm order. This is yet another step in defining the airline's long-term plans for international expansion. "We are placing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s," said Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo. At a briefing in the national capital, Elbers said that out of the option for 70 planes, it is now placing a firm order of 30 aircraft. Last year, IndiGo took the strategic decision to induct widebody aircraft in its fleet by placing a firm order for 30 A350-900 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 70 aircraft. The original order's deliveries are expected to start in 2027. "We will continue to add one aircraft a week to double by the end of the decade," said the IndiGo CEO. This strategic move will enable IndiGo to spread its wings further and expand its long-haul international network, connecting Indian metros to different parts of the world. 'With this, it will create more travel options for its customers to new international destinations and also enable more flights to the hubs of its partner airlines,' the airline said in a statement. IndiGo's Airbus A350-900 aircraft will be powered by Rolls Royce's Trent XWB engine. In March 2025, IndiGo began preparing for its long-haul operations with the introduction of six temporarily leased wide-body aircraft, deliveries of which will be concluded by 2026. With its fleet of more than 400 aircraft, the airline operates around more than 2,200 daily flights.

"It helps us": IndiGo CEO on Turkish Airlines aircraft lease agreement extension
New Delhi [India], June 1 (ANI): IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers on Sunday said that the one-time, last and final three-month extension, granted till August 2025, for the 'damp-leased' aircraft from Turkish Airlines will help the airline manage ongoing operations and customer commitments. '...we have the coming month to find a solution for the customers which were booked. The extension helps us, of course, to have more time to get that addressed, and we'll look, we'll look at how to address it and how to incorporate it. So we still have time for the next few months to do that,' the CEO said during a press conference in the national capital. 'There's been a government decision, and we will, of course, be compliant with the government decision,' he added. On May 30, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted Indigo the one-time, last and final extension for the 'damp-leased' aircraft from Turkish Airlines. The lease was initially valid till May 31, 2025. 'However, in order to avoid passenger inconvenience due to immediate flight disruption, Indigo has been granted a one-time last and final extension of three months,' the DGCA said. 'This extension is based on the undertaking from the airline that they will terminate the damp lease with Turkish Airlines within this extension period, and shall not seek any further extension for these operations,' the DGCA had added. Earlier in the day, IndiGo announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus to enlarge its wide-body aircraft order by converting 30 aircraft of its purchase rights for 70 aircraft into a firm order. 'This is yet another step in defining the airline's long-term plans of international expansion,' IndiGo said. In April 2024, IndiGo decided to induct widebody aircraft into its fleet by placing a firm order for 30 A350-900 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 70 aircraft. The original order's deliveries are expected to start in 2027. 'This strategic move will enable IndiGo to spread its wings further and expand its long-haul international network, connecting Indian metros to different parts of the world. With this, it will create more travel options for its customers to new international destinations and also enable more flights to the hubs of its partner airlines,' said an IndiGo statement. IndiGo's Airbus A350-900 aircraft will be powered by Rolls Royce's Trent XWB engine. In March 2025, IndiGo began preparing for its long-haul operations by introducing six temporarily leased wide-body aircraft, the deliveries of which will be concluded by 2026. 'India is the world's third largest aviation market today. With the Government's commitment to ensure India comes into her own on the world stage of aviation leadership by building cutting-edge infrastructure and developing the country into a global aviation hub, the opportunity is one of enormous growth,' IndiGo added. With its fleet of 400+ aircraft, the airline is operating around 2200+ daily flights, connecting 90+ domestic and 40+ international destinations, inducted 58 aircraft in 2024 and welcomed over 118 million customers in 2024-25.
