Mazda Canada CEO David Klan to retire, COO Amy Fleming named successor

RICHMOND HILL — Mazda Canada Inc. says president and chief executive David Klan will retire later this year.
He will be succeeded by Amy Fleming, the company's chief operating officer, effective Oct. 1.
Klan, 33-year veteran of Mazda, held a broad range of executive positions with Japanese automaker globally before taking the top Canadian job in 2019.
Fleming joined Mazda Canada in 2006 and has been senior director and chief operating officer since 2023.
Based in Richmond Hill, Ont., Mazda Canada is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer service and parts support of Mazda vehicles in the country.
It has a network of 163 retail stores across Canada.

Appearing before a CRTC hearing today, company representatives compared regulating Spotify like a radio station to treating Uber like a horse and buggy. In its written submission, Spotify argued the CRTC doesn't have the jurisdiction to extend rules governing commercial negotiations and disputes in the broadcast sector to online players. The CRTC is holding a hearing on market dynamics as part of its work to implement the Online Streaming Act, which updated broadcasting laws to capture online platforms. During previous hearings, large cable and broadcasting companies like Bell and Rogers called on the CRTC to loosen existing rules for traditional players. They're taking aim at regulations governing how cable channels must be packaged and disputes about carriage of cable channels. VIA Rail and Unifor reach tentative agreement, avoiding a strike
Via Rail has reached a tentative deal with the union representing 2,400 of its workers across the country, the Crown corporation said on Friday. The deal averts a walkout involving members of Unifor, who had voted for a strike mandate to be exercised as early as Sunday. Unifor says the tentative agreement offers gains in wages, job security and working conditions. The union represents workers at VIA Rail stations, maintenance centres, the customer care centre, in administrative offices and on board trains. Unifor didn't release details of the deal, preferring to first inform its members at meetings scheduled over the coming weeks. VIA Rail has said it was committed to a fair and reasonable agreement while remaining competitive and providing quality service. The two parties had broken off contract talks earlier this month, setting the stage for a potential strike.

Canadian NBA star charged with reckless driving in Indiana
Having a bum ankle apparently didn't stop Zach Edey from putting his foot to the floor while driving earlier this week. Article content Edey reportedly told the officers that the only reason he was driving at that speed was because he was trying to pass another vehicle. He was named to the NBA's all-rookie first team after notching 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game over the 66 contests he appeared in and collecting 85 total blocks. Article content During his time with Purdue, Edey was a two-time NCAA player of the year and was selected ninth overall by Memphis in last year's draft. Article content However, his sophomore season likely will have a delayed start after Edey underwent surgery on his left ankle earlier this month. The big man required the procedure to repair and restabilize his ankle after spraining it again during off-season training.
