IPhone Supplier TDK Readies Batteries Geared for Thin AI Gadgets
TDK Corp. is readying a new generation of batteries to power smartphones through AI tasks at a time that major client Apple Inc. is also preparing to launch a slimmer handset.
The Tokyo-based component maker will begin shipping its third iteration of silicon-anode batteries by the end of June, Chief Executive Officer Noboru Saito said. That's ahead of TDK's original schedule for shipments in the September quarter and may give smartphone makers enough time to use these cells in thinner models launching this year, he said.

Apple Lessons ad Apple Apple MacBooks are arguably one of the best options for students, and the Cupertino giant is highlighting this in its new ad for India. Released on June 4, the new Lessons ad focuses on how students can use a Mac to 'level up' and make the most of their studies. This comes at a time when M4 Mac sales have seen double-digit growth in a quarter. The new Lessons ad encourages students to try different approaches to learning instead of mugging up answers. It showcases a few Apple Intelligence features like Summary in Writing Tools to turn a lengthy note into short bullet points, and how the MacBook Air M4 allows students to run multiple engineering applications, including AutoCAD, MATLAB, and more simultaneously. According to a report from Counterpoint, Apple saw 17% YoY growth in the global PC market shipments in Q1 2025. It was driven by M4 series Macs. In India, Apple had a 6% PC market share with 29% growth in 2024. The Cupertino tech giant has seen very strong momentum for its MacBook sales in the country—and there are various reasons for it. 'Education as a segment is increasing. Young professionals and even young students are opting for Macs, especially after the launch of their M series chipsets, because a lot of people believe and correlate that to performance and efficiency gains, which they offer,' says Tarun Pathik, Research Director at Counterpoint. The consumer financing and discounts on Apple products are also playing a major part in MacBook adoption in India. 'That [consumer financing and discounts] is one of the reasons why iPhone sales are growing in India at one of the fastest rates in the world,' he added. 'And this has led to an increase in Mac sales. We have always seen a very healthy step-by-step entry into the Apple ecosystem.' The first point of entry into the Apple ecosystem is the iPhone, which is followed by the AirPods, Apple Watch, iPad, and eventually a Mac. 'We are seeing that transition of such users who entered through iPhone a couple of years back and now they are reaching the level three or four to buy a Mac,' explains Pathik. While Apple is focusing on the education segment with its new ad, the Cupertino giant is also forming corporate partnerships that have contributed to its Mac growth. 'Indian companies like Zoho and Wipro have integrated Macs into their operations, which has increased Apple's enterprise adoption,' he said. With education and enterprise both driving momentum, Apple's Mac strategy in India seems to be working. The new Lessons ad is a timely push to deepen that growth.

Apple iOS 26: 4 iPhone Apps To Gain Important Updates In Days, Report Claims
Apple's World Wide Developers Conference starts soon (on Monday, June 9) and it's widely expected to include significant updates to the design of apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac and more. A new report says that four of the most popular built-in apps are to gain new features. Notes and other apps are about to be updated, it seems. The apps in question are Messages, Music, Notes and CarPlay, according to a new report at 9to5Mac. Your mileage will vary, but I use the first three of these multiple times a day, and CarPlay, well, when I'm in the car, obviously. The Apple Messages app already offers great security and lots of neat features, but it seems that live translation of incoming and outgoing messages is on the horizon. This is handy if someone sends you a message in another language, perhaps because they're passing on something they didn't understand, and you'll see it in your language instantly. Additionally, it's claimed Apple is working on putting polls into Messages, something already available in WhatsApp, for instance. If Apple Intelligence is worked in here, it could suggest a poll based on your messages. Separately, it's also thought that Apple could introduce end-to-end encryption for Messages going to or from Android phones as part of Apple's embrace of RCS. Details of that here. The Music app, this and other reports say, could show animated album art on the lock screen, not just in the app itself. That could be neat. I probably use Notes more than any other app. It's so versatile. In iOS 26, the app may introduce export for the Markdown format. This means you can easily put text in bold by typing **bold**, for instance, and when the note is exported, such formatting will remain. Finally the new design language (codenamed Solarium, it is thought) which will be front-and-center for the WWDC announcements for iOS, iPadOS, macOS and watchOS, will also be coming to CarPlay. This is not a surprise but it shows Apple hasn't just been focusing on CarPlay Ultra recently.

American iPhones Maybe Targeted In Spyware Attacks
Were iPhones really attacked? A new report from the team at iVerify warns that a 'previously unknown' vulnerability in iOS maybe enabled a highly targeted attack on iPhones in the U.S. as well as Europe. This flaw was not in the core messaging architecture itself, but in its nickname feature. 'Any increase in the size of a codebase is going to introduce attack opportunities,' iVerify told me. And that's the case here. When a user updates their profile, 'nickname, photo, or wallpaper,' this triggers "a 'Nickname Update' on a recipient's device." Trivial though it might seem, that nickname update process is a data transmission from one device to another, it's implicitly trusted data and it's within the secure enclave. 'This vulnerability was present in iOS versions up to 18.1.1 and fixed in iOS 18.3.1.' While there's no doubting the flaw and the fix, there is no concrete proof it was exploited in the wild. 'We analyzed crash data from nearly 50,000 devices," iVerify says, "and found that the imagent crashes related to Nickname Updates are exceedingly rare, comprising less than 0.001% of all crash logs collected.' But those rare instances appeared only on 'devices belonging to individuals likely to be targeted by sophisticated threat actors.' Sometimes, Occam's Razor really does apply. Those high-risk individuals were affiliated with 'political campaigns, media organizations, tech companies, and governments in the EU and U.S.' Delete All Texts On Your Phone That Look Like This These are exactly the type of individuals Apple says should use its Lockdown Mode, which restricts a raft of iPhone features and is intended to shutdown attacks that might otherwise get through. It's unclear whether that would have mitigated this risk — and irrelevant now as it's patched. But it certainly makes an iPhone more secure. 'iOS remains a robust and secure operating system,' iVerify told me. 'iMessage is likely targeted not because it's insecure but instead because it's popular." That said, it's toeing a tricky line between feature-rich messenger and secure comms tool. Signal is better, iVerify says, if you want to really secure your comms with a COTS platform. That said, as we've seen before, iMessage is on all iPhones and is almost never disabled, and so if there is a working zero-click attack, it will likely get through. On that note, 'Signal is open source,' iVerify says, "which does have security advantages in the sense that it's transparent and therefore easier for researchers to examine. And it's a simple code base, which does reduce the potential attack surface.' Google Confirms Most Gmail Users Must Upgrade Accounts iVerify reports that forensic examination of one affected device "provided evidence suggesting exploitation: several directories related to SMS attachments and message metadata were modified and then emptied just 20 seconds after the imagent crash occurred. This pattern of deleting potential evidence mirrors techniques observed in confirmed spyware attacks where attackers 'clean up' after themselves." But again, this is speculation ands there's no confirmation or attribution, as Apple will be keen to emphasize. While there's 'no smoking gun,' iVerify says, 'definitively proving exploitation exists, when taken together, this body of evidence gives us moderate confidence these crashes indicate targeted exploitation attempts.' I have reached out to Apple for any comments on this report. iMessage has been exploited before and whether or not that's what has happened here, it will remain a target — as will WhatsApp and all other apps and platforms that run on most devices. Exploiting such a vulnerability is the easiest way to compromise an endpoint, as is especially relevant at the moment when it comes to encrypted data. For most users though, your biggest iMessage risks remains texts with malicious lures and crafty links that trick you into clicking.
