Zhao Xintong becomes first player from China to win snooker world championship as he beats Mark Williams
Zhao Xintong has become the first player from China to win the snooker world championship after beating Mark Williams 18-12.
The 28-year-old is also only the third winner of the tournament to have come through qualifying since it moved to Sheffield in 1977.
Sunday night's session began 17-8, meaning Zhao only needed one frame to clinch the title.
Three-time world champion Williams gave his fans faint hope of the most dramatic of comebacks when he won the opening four frames, including a break of 101.
However, it was only a matter of time and Zhao, nicknamed 'The Cyclone', finally got the frame he needed.
He wins £500,000 and the prestige of being the first Chinese and Asian champion at the Crucible.
Fifty-year-old Welshman Williams paid tribute to his opponent, saying there's "a new superstar of the game and he's over there".
Despite his huge lead, Zhao admitted he was "so nervous" ahead of the final frames and that his historic win seemed like a dream.
He thanked his family and coaches and said he would probably "have a good drink tonight".
The player was joined by his mother and girlfriend as the ticker tape fell, and he collected the trophy.
Zhao - who now lives in the UK - was banned for 20 months in 2023 for his part in a match-fixing scandal.
Despite not throwing a match himself, he lost his professional status and was barred from the snooker world tour, though he's due back next season.
Zhao also thrashed his hero Ronnie O'Sullivan 17-7 in the semi-final
"The Rocket" posted a picture of the pair together when his opponent was a child alongside the caption: "How it started vs how it's going."
A record 10 Chinese players made it to the Crucible this year, and Zhao's victory could make him a huge star back home and propel the sport to new heights.
When Ding Junhui made it to the final in 2016, more than 200 million people in China are estimated to have watched on TV.

The new anthem, which was co-written with Karl Brazil, Owen Parker and Erik Jan Grob, features the Italian singer Laura Pausini. The track will be accompanied by a new video which will be shown for the first time at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. Williams added: 'I've grown up watching the walk-outs, the anthems, the drama – so writing and recording the official Fifa anthem is a real privilege. 'I wanted to create something that captures all of it — the passion, the nerves, the pride and the majesty of that feeling just before kick-off. 'Football and music have always meant the world to me, and bringing them together on this kind of stage gives me goosebumps. 'I know I'll get to perform this song at some of my favourite tournaments in the coming years, which fills me with excitement. It's a real honour that Laura Pausini accepted my invitation to feature on the song – she's an incredible artist with the perfect voice.' Pausini, 51, rose to fame after winning the 1993 newcomer artists' section of the Sanremo Music Festival, one of the biggest and longest running song contests in Italy, with her song, La Solitudine. The singer, who has released Italian and Spanish albums, won a Grammy in 2006 for Best Latin Pop Album and was also nominated for an Oscar in 2020 for best original song with Io si/Seen. Sesko has starred for RB Leipzig since joining the club from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023, netting 39 goals in 87 games across all competitions. Arsenal have a longstanding interest in the 22-year-old, having attempted to sign him last summer before he agreed a new deal with Leipzig, and the Gunners have held initial talks over a move this summer. However, Bayern could hijack the deal after Bild reported that the Bundesliga champions are also interested in Sesko. The report states that Bayern also tried sign Sesko last summer and a move is 'not completely off the table' this summer. It is claimed that Bayern are huge fans of the striker and would play him up front ahead of Kane, who would drop back into the No.10 role. The report adds that Leipzig want more than €100million (£85m) for Sesko, but are 'willing to talk' for a figure of around €70m (£60m). The news comes after it emerged that Bayern are also interested in another Arsenal target. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, but Sky Germany are reporting that the winger is open to joining Bayern. Leroy Sane recently joined Galatasaray on a free transfer, with his Bayern contract expiring at the end of the summer, and it is claimed that Williams could replace him at the Allianz Arena. The report adds that the deal is 'still at an early stage', with Williams having a release clause in his contract of around €60m (£51m). Bilbao president Jon Uriarte recently spoke out about the forward's future and suggested he could remain at the club. "I believe we have a winning and interesting project for everyone, and Nico is part of that project, just like many other players," Uriarte told Spanish outlet El Correo. "The project becomes easier if we keep our players - and I believe Nico and the rest of the squad have a very exciting year ahead." Williams, meanwhile, said last summer: "Many teams want you, I've had many offers to do things that another player would have done, but I'm happy here, Bilbao is my home. My heart is red and white. "I had a talk with my parents and my brother, and we decided it was best to stay for another year." Barcelona, though, are also interested in Williams and reports from Spain claim that they have opened talks with the player's agent.
