To win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, contenders must also master geography

Washington Post27-05-2025

OXON HILL, Md. — Rudveep Randhawa's three kids competed in eight consecutive Scripps National Spelling Bees from 2016 to 2024, with four appearances by daughter Aisha and two each by daughter Lara and son Avi. Yet when Avi's spelling journey concluded in last year's semifinals, Randhawa, a pediatric endocrinologist who goes by 'Dr. Happy,' was decidedly grumpy.

‘Big undertaking': First Presbyterian Church in Manitowoc seeking donations for fresh coat of paint

MANITOWOC, Wis. (WFRV) – First Presbyterian Church was built in Manitowoc in 1870 and has prominently carved its place in the lakeshore city's skyline ever since. But such a grand, 155-year-old building also needs a touchup every once in a while. 'Though it's brick, there's a lot of woodwork around the trim, doorways and things that haven't been done for quite a while,' Pastor Matthew Sauer, who leads the Manitowoc Cooperative Ministry, said. 'It's a big undertaking. It's milled woodwork and things, so it's got design to it and architectural shape to it.' Sauer says that the project is not just necessitated by appearance, but also safety. 'We need to get this wood paint, and one it's just a cosmetic thing, but there's also wood rot in some place where we've got to worry about replacement of wood in some places, and we can't do that until we're up there,' he said. 'It's a great facelift but it also allows the building to be a safe and secure place, it's more than cosmetic.' The brick building with original wooden highlights is both a place of worship and center of community service. 'We need to make sure that our facilities are safe and are able to meet the work that we do,' Sauer said. 'Every Wednesday night we feed 200 people free dinners, they're all prepped here and we serve right out the front doors. People walk up and drive their cars. In the winter we also host the warming shelter here. It's a safety issue, it's a preservation issue, it's a mission issue to the community.' Repainting and repairing century and a half old wood is not the average carpentry project, it comes at the expense of tens of thousands of dollars. 'It needs to be done right and take it's time and it's a little bit slow. It's probably between $17,000 and $20,000 but that could go up if they find they need to replace a lot of woodwork,' Sauer said. 'It's not just running sand paper over a two by four and throwing some paint on it with a paint sprayer. It's got to be detailed, can't have it spilling into the windows, we've got beautiful stained glass windows.' About half of the funding will come from public donations, with the rest coming from the church's pre-existing building fund. Donations can be made on the Manitowoc Cooperative Ministry website. 'There [is extra budget] built into our bid that contingency, that if we need to be replacing wood, that we have that built in already,' Sauer said. 'You can't just go to Lowe's and pick that all up. This is all hand done, so nothing is exactly the same.' Always a work in progress, left over funds will be put towards renovating bathrooms and repairing the organ. 'It's humbling. It makes us want to do it right. So that 20 years from now someone isn't complaining 'how come they took the cheap way out,'' Sauer said. 'I talk metaphorically about the ghosts that are in the building. And there are times when I sit in the building and listen to the building have healthy creaks.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Nashville non-profit provides a simple service with a meaningful impact

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Inside an old school bus, a basic necessity most of us take for granted. 'When I first heard about Shower The People, it just seemed obvious; a shower is what people need to reset. It kind of brings them hope, restores them — rejuvenates them,' said Tim Moses, a volunteer with the non-profit organization. Moses drives the bus-turned-mobile shower unit across Nashville to provide hot showers, laundry service and hygiene products to people experiencing homelessness. Renovations to Shelby Golf Course pay dividends for golfers 'We have a lot of people who are just amazed this is even here,' Moses said. 'Then we have a lot of people who come back each time because they rely on it.' Executive Director Meredith MacLeod Jaulin started Shower The People in 2017. 'I'm a clinical social worker, so social work is my background, and I really wanted to do something that would help people without having to ask a ton of questions — ask them to bring all their paperwork and prove their need to us,' MacLeod Jaulin said. 'I saw a Facebook video about a company called Lava Mae out in San Francisco, and I was like, 'This is exactly what Nashville needs.'' Shower The People notes there are only 15 showers in the city available on a walk-in basis. This organization has helped fill the gap. Over the past eight years, they've provided 8,000 showers and distributed 500,000 personal care items. 'We have first aid kits [and] hygiene kits, which are really basic hygiene supplies — toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, other miscellaneous stuff,' MacLeod Jaulin explained as she gave News 2 a tour of the bus. She said she gets a lot of hugs after clients take a shower. 'Because it's the first time a lot of them feel clean and feel human,' MacLeod Jaulin said. 'You can tell that they have been really struggling to relax and feel safe and unwind. They are given 20 minutes with a place that they can do that with a door locked, and they can be safe. Then when people come out, they are standing a little bit taller; they have a little bit of a smile on their face.' News 2 On Tour | Explore the communities that shape Middle Tennessee Shower The People also provides laundry services to low-income families and victims of disasters and emergencies, including survivors of recent tornadoes and the Covenant School shooting. The organization is solely funded through grants and donations. 'We are working on raising money for our next laundry or shower bus,' MacLeod Jaulin said. 'It will have four shower stalls on it, so we'll be able to get twice as many people in and really be able to double the impact that we're making.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
