'The Asian Tour is my foundation' – Shubhankar Sharma reflects on his journey
Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma, 28, known for his frequent visits to Dubai and the UAE, has returned home to India, compete in the $2 million International Series India, presented by DLF, starting Thursday, 30th January 2025, at DLF Golf & Country Club.
Having played recently in the HERO Dubai Desert Classic and the Ras Al Khaimah Championship on the DP World Tour, Sharma is fully aware of the challenges he faces but is excited to play in front of his home crowd.
While much of the spotlight this week is on LIV Golf stars like Bryson DeChambeau, the reigning US Open champion, and Chile's Joaquin Niemann, last year's International Series Rankings winner, Sharma is confident the competition will be fierce thanks to the growing strength of the Asian Tour and The International Series.
A two-time winner on the Asian Tour, Sharma first made his mark by winning the 2018 Asian Tour Order of Merit. "Indian golf has made tremendous progress over the last decade, and it's been a proud journey for me," he said. "The Asian Tour has been my foundation. It's where I started, and it holds a special place in my heart."
Sharma is joined by an impressive roster of Indian golfers this week, including Dubai-based Anirban Lahiri, who plays alongside DeChambeau and England's Paul Casey for Crushers GC. Also in the field are 11-time Asian Tour winner Gaganjeet Bhullar, the most successful Indian golfer on the tour, as well as legends like Jeev Milkha Singh and Shiv Kapur, who resides in Dubai.
"For me, the Asian Tour has always been a place to hone my skills and compete with the best. It was where I got my first real taste of international golf," said Sharma.
"The International Series is a testament to how much the Tour has grown. The fields are deeper, the competition tougher, and the opportunities for players have expanded significantly."
Sharma played in the season-ending PIF Saudi International last season, where he witnessed firsthand the increased level of competition in The International Series.
"I played in Riyadh, and it was incredible to see the low scoring and high-level play. The competition is fierce, but that's what makes it so exciting," he added.
Returning to India and the Asian Tour feels like a homecoming for Sharma. "There's a certain comfort here. It's more relaxed, and I know everyone. It creates a great atmosphere, and I couldn't be happier to be back," he said.
This week's $2 million event is the second tournament of the season on the Asian Tour and the first of the year on The International Series.

Crushers GC go back-to-back as Niemann clinches fourth title of LIV Golf season
Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann continued his dominant run in the 2025 LIV Golf season with a sensational bogey-free final round of 8-under 63 to win LIV Golf Virginia at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Gainesville. It marked his fourth victory in eight events, bringing his total to 15-under for the 54-hole tournament - one shot ahead of Graeme McDowell and Dubai-based Anirban Lahiri. 'Pretty cool to be in this place, in this position right now,' said the 26-year-old Niemann, the current individual points leader. But Niemann wasn't the only one making headlines. Bryson DeChambeau's Crushers GC claimed their second straight team title, edging out 4Aces GC by two strokes. The win marked the eighth in team history, making the Crushers LIV Golf's most successful team to date. 'I didn't know we'd won eight times - that's pretty cool,' said DeChambeau, who fired a 65, joined by Lahiri, Paul Casey, and Charles Howell III, all carding 68s. 'It's a testament to these guys. The roster hasn't changed.' Dramatic Final Round Sunday's final round was packed with drama, including two rain delays, and a host of major champions including Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer, and McDowell, all chasing their first LIV Golf titles. Lahiri, the 36-hole leader, was also eyeing his first global victory in a decade. Adding to the excitement, Lee Westwood and Ben Campbell both shot 9-under 62s. After a sluggish start - 1-over through four - he rebounded with three birdies in the next four holes to stay in contention. 'Didn't get the start I wanted, and lost some momentum in the middle,' said Lahiri. 'I tried my best, but it's disappointing to come up short. I could've played a lot better today.' Despite the result, Lahiri remained upbeat: 'What I'm really happy about is how I handled myself. I was calmer, more focused, and believed I was going to win right until the final putt. That's something I'll carry with me into future events.' Though they didn't manage a clean sweep of the individual and team trophies, DeChambeau's elite form with top-five finishes in each of his last six starts, including two majors combined with the consistency of his veteran teammates, positions Crushers GC well for the top playoff seed for the second year in a row. MP Priya reflects on three-year wait before engagement to Rinku, says it was worth every second
Samajwadi Party MP Priya Saroj took to social media to post a heartwarming message after getting engaged to Indian cricketer Rinku Singh and reflected on the long road they had to take to get here. The engagement took place on Sunday in Lucknow with their wedding date locked in for November 18 at the Taj Hotel in Varanasi. "This day has been in our hearts for so long — almost three years — and the wait was worth every second. Engaged — with full hearts and a forever to go," posted Priya Saroj on her 'X' account. Hailing from Karkhiyaon village in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, she has continued her father's legacy with her career in politics. Her father, Tufani Saroj, is a three-time MP and current MLA from UP's Kerakat.
