Power star, Bombers defender return to AFL action

The Advertiser15-05-2025

Port Adelaide star Willie Rioli will make an immediate return from his one-match AFL ban and Essendon defender Jayden Laverde is back for his first senior appearance of the season.
In other round-10 selection news, Fremantle have lost ruckman Sean Darcy to a knee injury and Jacob van Rooyen is among the trio of players axed by Melbourne.
Rioli initially withdrew from last week's South Australian Showdown in the wake of the furore surrounding his threatening text message to Western Bulldogs defender Bailey Dale.
The Power forward was then banned by the AFL for one game when it emerged he had previously threatened rivals from Essendon and Geelong on the field.
All eyes will be on Rioli when he returns to the spotlight against the Cats at Adelaide Oval on Saturday as Port seek to snap a two-match losing skid.
Logan Evans replaces injured Power defender Kane Farrell (knee), but there is still no room for veteran Travis Boak.
Geelong have regained Jack Henry (hamstring) and Lawson Humphries (concussion), but five-time All-Australian defender Tom Stewart (knee) remains sidelined.
Essendon's Laverde has not been seen at AFL level this year owing to a hip flexor injury and a VFL suspension for headbutting.
The 29-year-old backman returns to bolster the Bombers' defence in their clash with the Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
Taylor Duryea has been rewarded for his strong VFL form and will return for the Dogs at senior level for the first time since round two.
GWS will welcome back key duo Toby Bedford and Darcy Jones against Fremantle at Engie Stadium on Saturday, while co-captain Toby Greene has proved his fitness after an ankle complaint.
Stephen Coniglio (glute) remains sidelined, while Fremantle's Darcy has been put out of action by another knee injury which they hope is only minor.
Collingwood have regained Brayden Maynard and Scott Pendlebury after they sat out last week's win over the Dockers, and Brody Mihocek (abdominal) is back from injury.
But Magpies captain Darcy Moore (shoulder) and Lachie Schultz (concussion) are out of the team to face an unchanged Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday.
In Sunday's games, West Coast co-captain Oscar Allen (knee) is poised to return against St Kilda and premiership star Jayden Short (calf) is in Richmond's extended squad for the clash with North Melbourne.
Melbourne have dropped tall forward van Rooyen, Koltyn Tholstrup and Matthew Jefferson for their tough assignment against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.

Text message reveal after fiery teammate clash at the MCG

Melbourne captain Max Gawn has further moved to defuse any speculation of a relationship breakdown with defender Steven May, declaring his own reaction was 'poor' after a post-siren exchange at the MCG on Monday. Gawn revealed the pair were 'still talking' via text and said it was important to 'defend' May after the clash. After a Gawn miskick in the final seconds sealed a one-point loss to Collingwood, the premiership-winning teammates clashed, with cameras catching the Demons captain looking angry after what appeared to be a serve from May. In the aftermath, both Gawn and his coach Simon Goodwin declared the incident was just two passionate and competitive teammates, and on Monday morning the seven-time All Australian cleared the air once and for all. While he couldn't remember what May 'actually said', Gawn said he should have known his teammate's words were coming from a place of 'care'. 'I think it says (a bit about) both of us; we were both extremely disappointed in that last 30 seconds. I thought my reaction was really poor,' Gawn said. 'I had a teammate showing care, his version of care from a long history with Steven May. I know that. I'm really agreeable with how strong his feedback and terminology and body language is on-ground because he gets the best out of his team. 'I can't confidently say what was said. It was definitely around my decision (to centre the ball). I agree with him in hindsight that my decision was poor. It was a killer of a kick.' Gawn said he reacted badly because he was 'sick of losing to Collingwood' and other close losses and wanted to stick up for May. 'It was all going on in my head. I was extremely disappointed. We had a chance to win the game, and that played out in the goalsquare,' he told Triple M's Mick in the Morning. 'I'm here to defend Steven. He's copped it a little bit in the media over the last 24 hours. If he had his time again, he might not do it on the final siren with a camera there. 'That's both of us throughout the whole game, and unfortunately, that's been caught on camera. I make it a bigger thing by pushing him away, and I'm slightly disappointed in how it's played out.' Gawn said the duo were 'all good'. 'I've got a lot of respect for him, and he has respect for me. We're currently still talking through it via text,' he said.

Afridi, Shamar Joseph headline list of BBL nominees

Pakistan superstar Shaheen Afridi is poised to play in the Big Bash League for the first time, after headlining a list of first nominees for next week's draft. Afridi was one of several Paksitan stars to be unveiled on Tuesday, along with Mohammad Rizwan, Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan. The quartet are expected to be available for the entire season, with Pakistan having a sizeable gap in their schedule across the Australian summer. Brisbane Heat will become immediate favourites for Shaheen's signature, after winning the first spot in the June 19 overseas player draft. West Indies phenomenon Shamar Joseph has also nominated again after going unsold last season, when he could not play the full tournament. This year, he should be available for the entire campaign. England duo Alex Hales and Sam Curran are also available, and will be cleared to play the majority of the season plus finals if they are picked. A similar scenario applies for New Zealand pacemen Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson, while Sri Lanka entertainer Kusal Perera is another nominee. English pair Heather Knight and Sophie Ecclestone are the biggest names to nominate for the WBBL, with Lauren Bell, Shabnim Ismail and Deandra Dotton also available.
