ESPN's Jay Bilas roasted for LeBron James ‘complainer' comment during Lakers game
ESPN analyst Jay Bilas made what turned into a controversial comment regarding LeBron James' interactions with referees during the Lakers' Game 1 loss to the Timberwolves on Saturday night.
As James expressed his frustration over a no-call on a jump shot, Bilas defended the superstar, stating, 'He's not a complainer.'

'LeBron James thought he got hit on that jump shot, and I think he did,' Bilas said.

Added ESPN play-by-play announcer Mark Jones, also on the call for the game, 'You can see the tangible frustration etched on the faces of both he and [Luka] Dončić tonight.'
Bilas added, infamously, 'And he's not a complainer.'
The statement immediately raised eyebrows, considering James' well-documented history of… well… complaining about not getting calls and to referees, in general, during games.

LeBron James is often seen arguing calls or voicing displeasure toward referees, frequently making headlines as a result.
Critics quickly took to social media, expressing their disbelief over the comment.

'Jay Bilas clearly only watches college basketball,' one Tweeter wrote. 'Nobody complains more than Lebron, other than maybe Luka.'
Another wrote, 'This guy lost all credibility. The most preposterous statement of all time.'
Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas humorously chimed in with a video mocking the idea that James is not a complainer, and posing a photo of the Lakers star on one knee 'begging' for a call from a referee.
All of this, of course, as the Lakers were obliterated by the Minnesota Timberwolves 117-95 in Game 1 of their Western Conference playoff run, and at home in Los Angeles.

James finished the night with 19 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals while shooting just 1-for-5 from three.

Fans React to Nuggets Star Russell Westbrook's Major Free Agency Decision
Fans React to Nuggets Star Russell Westbrook's Major Free Agency Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former nine-time All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook, most recently a reserve with the Denver Nuggets, has made a decision when it comes to his potential free agency this season. Advertisement The 6-foot-4 UCLA product remains shockingly athletic, even at the relatively advanced age of 36. He may no longer be in MVP conversations, but the now-well-traveled veteran guard proved to be a critical-if-erratic contributor to Denver during the banged-up club's run to a seven-game Western Conference semifinals playoff series loss against the 68-win Oklahoma City Thunder, Westbrook's first team, this spring. Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook (4) moves the ball up court against the A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Westbrook inked a two-year deal to leave his hometown L.A. Clippers and join the Nuggets during the 2024 offseason. He had a $3.5 million player option on his contract for 2025-26. By June 29, Westbrook needed to decide whether or not he would pick it up or decline and enter free agency. Now, sources inform Marc Stein of Substack that the 2017 MVP has decided how to proceed with regards to that option. Advertisement Per Stein, Westbrook will decline the option and enter unrestricted free agency yet again this summer. As he's aged out of his prime, the former superstar has often been criticized for his ball stopping and late-game decision making. Still, as a reserve eating up minutes on a good team (provided he's not playing at the ends of close contests), Westbrook could be a useful asset to a contender as an end-of-rotation bench guard. Is he angling for maximal money, say something in the range of a bi-annual exception (estimated to be worth around $5.1 million next year, per Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors)? Does Westbrook prefer long-term security, even if it's a multi-year veteran's minimum deal? Or is his priority trying to achieve his first championship? Advertisement Time will tell. Now, fans are reacting to Stein's report. X user @KevonLooneyMuse joked, "He should go to the Lakers. Would be a great fit," a seeming wink to Westbrook's unhappy year and a half with Los Angeles' other NBA franchise from 2021-23. "His world tour continues," observed @DatHandsomeJerk. Westbrook has played for six franchises across his past seven NBA seasons. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 13, 2025, where it first appeared.

Russell Westbrook won't exercise $3.5M option for next season with Nuggets
Russell Westbrook will not be exercising his $3.5 million player option with the Denver Nuggets for next season and will instead become a free agent, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Friday. The decision doesn't necessarily mean that Westbrook won't be back with the Nuggets, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because neither side revealed the decision publicly. NBA reporter Marc Stein first reported Westbrook's decision, which was later confirmed by ESPN and The Denver Post, among others. Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists for the Nuggets this season — his 17th in the NBA — and helped Denver reach the second round of the playoffs, falling in seven games to eventual Western Conference champion Oklahoma City. He underwent surgery after the season to repair multiple ligament tears in his right hand, an issue he played through during the season. At that time, Westbrook posted in his newsletter that he was "grateful for everyone's support all year and I can't wait to be back out there at 100 percent soon. The comeback is already in motion." That would indicate that he is planning to play somewhere next season. Westbrook is a nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA selection and won the MVP award after the 2016-17 season. He's also part of the NBA's 75th anniversary team and has averaged 21.2 points and eight assists per game over his career. Reporting by The Associated Press. Bill Simmons Insanely Predicted Bennedict Mathurin's Stats In NBA Finals: "27 Points In 22 Minutes"
Bill Simmons Insanely Predicted Bennedict Mathurin's Stats In NBA Finals: "27 Points In 22 Minutes" originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Bennedict Mathurin was the X-factor for the Pacers in their Game 3 win. He dropped 27 points in 22 minutes to lead all scorers in their 116-107 win over the Thunder in Indiana's Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Advertisement Coming off the bench for the Pacers, not many expected that Mathurin could do something like this. But NBA analyst Bill Simmons had a hunch that he was about to pull off something like this after the Pacers' Game 1 win. Well, not something like this, but eerily, he made the exact prediction of his performance in Game 3, days before it actually happened. 'I thought Mathurin seemed athletically comfortable in this game and I'm intrigued by what his upside is for them, because OKC is so fast and so athletic, and they're just at warp speed. And I just thought he looked comfortable in the chaos in a way that I'm wondering, are we gonna hear from him in this series? With one of those games, you know when Mathurin will have one of those games where like he scored 27 points in 22 minutes, I feel like he's going to have one of those', said Simmons after Game 1. Mathurin provides a unique edge to the Pacers from their bench. He is extremely confident in his abilities, so much so that he even challenged LeBron James when he came into the NBA as a rookie. He and T.J. McConnell provided the spark from the Pacers' bench that they needed to take them over the finish line in Game 3. In his 27 points, Mathurin went 9 of 12 from the field while making two of his three attempts from beyond the arc. Mathurin Joins Elite List With LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, And Kawhi Leonard Following this elite performance off the bench, Mathurin became one of only five players in this century to score 25+ points in an NBA Finals game below or at the age of 22. Other players who belong on this list are LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kawhi Leonard, and Tony Parker. From the onset of his NBA career, Mathurin had his eyes set on LeBron James. He challenged James right from his rookie season's first media day. Advertisement 'A lot of people say he's great,' Mathurin said. 'I want to see how great he is. I don't think anybody is better than me. He's going to have to show me he's better than me.' From challenging one of the greatest players of all time to matching his achievements in the nascent stages of his career, Mathurin has certainly come a long way. In his third season with the Pacers, Mathurin is now a consistent 15-point-per-game scorer playing over 25 minutes a night. He missed a few games in his second season due to surgery, but he bounced back even harder from it and is now a crucial part of this championship-contending Pacers team.
