Two tourists died in Sri Lanka after hostel fumigated for bedbugs, police say
Two tourists have died from suspected pesticide poisoning after their hostel in Sri Lanka was fumigated for bedbugs, Britain's PA Media news agency has reported.
Ebony McIntosh, a 24-year-old digital marketing and social media manager from the English city of Derby, and 26-year-old Nadine Raguse from Germany were both staying in the Miracle Colombo City hostel in the Sri Lankan capital, PA reported Sri Lanka Police as saying on Thursday.
They both fell ill after a room at the hostel was fumigated to treat bedbugs, Sri Lanka Police spokesman Buddhika Manatunga told PA, and McIntosh was hospitalized on Saturday.
Officers are investigating whether the two women were poisoned by pesticides, the Manatunga said.

He added that an autopsy to determine McIntosh's cause of death will take place after her family arrives in Sri Lanka on Monday.
Manatunga said the hostel, which is currently closed, will remain shut until then, according to PA.
A spokesperson for the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) told PA: 'We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Sri Lanka, and are in contact with the local authorities.'
CNN has reached out to the FCDO for further comment.
McIntosh's family have launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for their travel to Sri Lanka.
'We are absolutely heartbroken to share that our beautiful baby girl and big sister Ebony has passed away unexpectedly on the Saturday 1st February 2025, thousands of miles away from home,' McIntosh's family wrote on the page.
'Words cannot begin to express how broken we are, it's been like a nightmare since we found out on Sunday morning, we have prayed and prayed that this can't be true. It couldn't possibly happen to our lovely Ebs,' they continued.
The family wrote that McIntosh flew from London to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, January 28, to 'follow her dreams of travelling all over South Asia,' and that she was 'full of excitement,' having spent months planning.
They added that McIntosh and 'several others' were rushed to hospital on Saturday after suffering from vomiting and nausea, and that McIntosh also had difficulty breathing.
The family said she died within a few hours of arriving at the hospital.

Baby hit by stray bullet during shootout in Spring Hill
SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — A baby is recovering at the hospital after a stray bullet from an early morning shootout in the street tore through a Spring Hill home and struck the sleeping child in the head. According to the Spring Hill Police Department, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3000 block of Shandor Street in the Harvest Pointe subdivision shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday, June 6. PREVIOUS: Baby injured after shot fired into Spring Hill home Authorities said they believe a sedan stopped next to a person out on Shandor Street. The occupants of the vehicle reportedly shot at the young man, who fired back. Door bell camera footage shows grainy figures in and around a car. You can hear the loud gunshots before the vehicle accelerates out of frame. Several of the roughly 15 rounds fired in the shootout penetrated a nearby home. Police said one of the bullets went through a wall and grazed the skull of a 1-year-old girl who was sleeping inside the house. Body camera footage shows the intense response as a large number of officers flooded the neighborhood to collect evidence and search for those involved in the shooting. 'Hopefully they find out who did this and they seek justice,' a mother who lives in the neighborhood told News 2. The woman didn't know the family of the child who was injured, but like many residents, she was shaken by the outburst of violence that rocked the normally quiet community. 'I'm feeling for the family and our community, and I hope that we get through this and we find out who these people are. It's just horrible what's happened here today,' she said. News 2 spoke with the family's pastor from Southview Church, Josh Clendenen, who said the little girl suffered a skull fracture and some bleeding on the brain, but she is stable. ⏩ 'As a church community, we were shocked to hear of the events that took place last night in Spring Hill, and to learn one of the babies of our church family was injured, was devastating. We are rallying around the family with prayers and support, but also praying diligently for the protection of our community and its first responders,' Clendenen said. 'We're asking everyone to keep this family in your prayers and we encourage you to pray for your communities as well. We know God was protecting the entire family, and are believing for a complete healing and speedy recovery.' While the family didn't have a GoFundMe page by the time this article was published, the community has set up a meal train where people can donate both meals and money. Follow this link if you'd like to make a contribution. Meanwhile, SHPD urges Harvest Pointe residents to check any home camera footage between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. for any vehicles or person(s) walking during those hours. You can send videos to Detective Jonathan Tiller at jtiller@ If you have any other information related to this investigation, you can submit an anonymous tip by clicking here. Trump Appoints 22-Year-Old Ex-Gardener and Grocery Store Assistant to Lead U.S. Terror Prevention
The inexperienced 22-year-old reportedly tasked by Donald Trump with tackling U.S. extremism was working as a neighborhood gardener just five years ago and in a grocery store as recently as August 2023, the Daily Beast can reveal. Thomas Fugate, who graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio just 12 months ago, is currently heading up the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships at the DHS, as first reported by ProPublica Tuesday. The center, also known as CP3, plays a vital role supporting nationwide efforts to combat terrorism and hate-fueled violence. But according to the youngster's LinkedIn page, Fugate has almost no experience in this field—and in 2020 was working as a self-employed 'Landscape Business Owner.' There isn't much else on his resumé to suggest Fugate has the requisite skills to weed out terrorists. Prior to his work as a gardener—while studying for a degree in politics and law—Fugate worked at an H-E-B supermarket in Austin, Texas, as a 'Cross Functional Team Member.' According to his LinkedIn, he would 'perform various activities around every department of the store, fulfilling key duties contributing to store operations.' Since leaving college, Fugate has had a meteoric rise in the political world, having served as an 'advance team member' on President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign, according to his LinkedIn page. An avowed Republican, he also interned at the Heritage Foundation, the think tank behind Project 2025, and for Texas Representatives Terry Wilson and Steve Allison. Fugate was reportedly hired as a 'special assistant' in an immigration office at the DHS in February, according to ProPublica. He then took over CP3 after its previous director quit. Fugate did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast's request for comment. 'Tom Fugate has performed well in his current role as a Confidential Assistant in our Immigration & Border Security suboffice,' a senior DHS official told The Daily Beast. 'Due to his success, he has been temporarily given additional leadership responsibilities in the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships office (CP3). This is a credit to his work ethic and success on the job.' Fugate set up a political Instagram account last year, where his profile contains the motto, 'Men used to do great things. I believe they still can.' He has posted a number of photos from the campaign trail and his time in Washington, D.C. He also posted a video that showed him with a host of lesser lights in the Republican party, including the disgraced former congressman Madison Cawthorn, Kennedy Center President Ric Grenell, and MAGA personality Riley Gaines. He is also pictured with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. An older account in the name of Trey Fugate on X suggests that he was a fan of LEGO and Star Wars. He used the social media account to call on Texas politicians 'to protect the international affairs budget!' and 'Help the global poor, save lives.' That was just two years before he launched his new MAGA personality with the thomas4texas Instagram account, saying: 'Legend has it that Thomas Fugate didn't start the fire 🔥, but that is always been burning since the world's been turning 🤔. Welcome all to my new account for public service, community involvement, and politics 🇺🇸. Recently things have got to the point where I felt like my main account has become too focused on politics, so I wanted to switch things up!' The plethora of selfies and portraits plastered across his social media accounts suggest that the wryly arched eyebrow Fugate chose for his LinkedIn profile—a photograph taken in front of the seal of the Department of Homeland Security—was very much a knowing choice from a young man who seems to think he is destined for the top.
