China's UN envoy condemns Israeli strikes on Iran: State media, World News

BEIJING/HONG KONG - China condemns Israel's violations of Iran's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity and urges Israel to immediately stop all risky military actions, China's UN Ambassador Fu Cong said, state media Xinhua News Agency reported.
"China opposes the intensification of contradictions and the expansion of conflicts, and is deeply concerned about the consequences that may be brought about by Israel's actions," Fu was quoted as saying at a meeting held by the UN Security Council on the Middle East situation on Friday.
China is seriously concerned about the negative impact of the current developments on diplomatic negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue, said Fu.
Israel launched large-scale strikes against Iran early on Friday (June 13), saying it was the start of a prolonged operation to prevent Tehran from building an atomic weapon.
Iran launched retaliatory airstrikes on Friday night, with explosions heard in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the country's two largest cities.
China has issued advisories to its citizens in Israel and Iran of the "complex and severe" security situation in those countries, adding a warning to those in Israel to prepare for possible missile and drone attacks.

Israel Says It Killed Nine Top Iranian Nuclear Scientists in Opening Strike

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) announced Saturday that it had eliminated nine senior Iranian nuclear scientists in the opening phase of a major military offensive targeting Iran's nuclear program. The strikes began early Friday and mark a significant escalation in the region's long-standing tensions. In a detailed statement, the IDF described the operation as a "critical blow" to Iran's nuclear ambitions. The military said those killed were key contributors to Iran's efforts to develop nuclear weapons, holding decades of experience in nuclear and engineering sciences. The scientists were identified as: Fereydoon Abbasi, nuclear engineering expert Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, physicist Akbar Motalebi Zadeh, chemical engineer Saeed Barji, materials engineering specialist Amir Hassan Fakhahi, physicist Abd al-Hamid Minoushehr, reactor physics expert Mansour Asgari, physicist Ahmad Reza Zolfaghari Daryani, nuclear engineer Ali Bakhouei Katirimi, mechanical engineering expert The IDF noted that many among the dead were seen as potential successors to Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, Iran's top nuclear scientist assassinated in 2020 and widely believed to be the architect of Iran's nuclear weapons drive. According to Israeli officials, the scientists were killed in coordinated airstrikes on Tehran, part of a broader assault that also claimed the lives of several senior Iranian military commanders, including six high-ranking officers. The military said the operation was the result of "years-long clandestine intelligence gathering" targeting Iran's nuclear leadership. It involved extensive research by Israeli intelligence analysts, with efforts accelerating over the past year under a classified initiative. "The elimination of these key figures severely impacts Iran's ability to develop a nuclear weapon," the IDF claimed, asserting that the move was part of a compartmentalised military strategy. Further details on the scope of the offensive and Iran's response are yet to emerge. (With inputs from Agencies)

Israel Dismisses Iranian Claim of Downing F-35 Jets as 'Fake News'

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) strongly rejected Iranian media claims on Saturday that two Israeli F-35 fighter jets were shot down by Iran's air defence systems, labelling the reports as "fake news." Iran had earlier asserted it successfully destroyed two F-35s along with several micro air vehicles during a recent escalation in military tensions. However, IDF international spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani dismissed the claim on social media, stating, "While the Iranian regime spreads lies, we're taking down real threats." He shared a video showing Israeli forces shooting down an Iranian UAV over northern Israel. The statement came amid escalating hostilities between the two nations. On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the launch of Operation Rising Lion, a targeted military campaign aimed at neutralizing what he called Iran's growing nuclear threat. Netanyahu vowed the operation would continue "for as many days as it takes" to eliminate the danger. Early Saturday, Iran reportedly launched two missile salvos toward Israel. According to IDF spokesperson Brigadier General Efi Dufferin, fewer than 100 missiles were fired in total. Most were intercepted or failed to reach Israeli territory, causing only limited structural damage, mainly due to landslides. General Dufferin also warned of the possibility of further missile barrages, stating that Israel is committed to neutralizing Iran's missile capabilities to prevent any existential threat. The back-and-forth between Iran and Israel continues to inflame tensions in an already volatile region, with both sides accusing the other of aggression and disinformation. Baghdad asks Iran to avoid strikes on US targets in Iraq

PHOTO: AFP Baghdad asks Iran to avoid strikes on US targets in Iraq Baghdad - Baghdad has asked Tehran not to target US interests on Iraqi soil, a senior security official said June 14, as Washington's ally Israel and Iran traded blows, heightening tensions across the region. The government in Baghdad is a close ally of Tehran but also a strategic partner of Iran's arch-foe the United States, which has some 2,500 troops in Iraq as part of an anti-jihadist coalition. Fearing being caught up in a regional escalation, the Iraqi government asked Tehran not to strike in its territory, a senior Iraqi security official told AFP. 'The request was made. They promised us positive things,' said the official, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. The official added that Tehran has shown understanding with regard to Baghdad's request. Before the current escalation, which began early on June 13 with a series of Israeli attacks on military and nuclear sites in Iran, Tehran had threatened to strike military bases hosting US forces in the region in the event of a conflict triggered by the possible failure of nuclear talks with Washington. Throughout the Gaza war, which began in October 2023 and has pitted Israel against Iran-backed Palestinian group Hamas, Tehran-aligned armed factions have launched dozens of rocket and drone attacks targeting US forces in Iraq and in neighbouring Syria. Before the wave of attacks began, the United States on June 11 announced it was reducing staffing at its Baghdad embassy, citing security reasons. Several pro-Iran groups in Iraq called on June 13 to accelerate the departure of US forces from the country, with the powerful Kataeb Hezbollah warning of 'additional wars in the region'.
