Make Bobby Moore a Knight! Bowel cancer survivors join the masses as campaign to honour England's World Cup-winning captain gains momentum
Bowel cancer survivors have backed calls to honour England football legend Bobby Moore, after using his name to raise tens of millions for charity.
The former West Ham and Fulham defender, who captained the Three Lions to the 1966 World Cup victory over West Germany at Wembley, died with cancer in 1993, aged just 51.
But the charity fund which bears his name has generated more than £31 million for Cancer Research UK, helping spread awareness, support those with the disease and pay for treatment.
Former cancer patients who have been supported by the Bobby Moore Fund today joined the calls from household names across football, sport and entertainment in urging the Government to create a new posthumous knighthood in tribute to the east Londoner's significant contribution to life, both on and off the field.
Marcus Hitchens, whose footballer father Gerry Hitchens played alongside a young Bobby for England in the early 1960s, said: 'I remember my father saying what a great person he was, even as a young footballer, my father thought very highly of Bobby, he commanded respect from everyone, including the more seasoned professionals with a lot more years in the game.
'Sadly I think he was let down a bit by the authorities - he wasn't looked after when he left the game, he didn't have the opportunities that some former footballers do when they retire.
'So I think it's the right time to change that now, and give him in death the recognition he sadly failed to get - but completely deserved - during his lifetime.'
Mr Hitchens, a sales manager from Carmel, Holywell in north east Wales, said the fund has given him the 'platform' to spread the message about bowel cancer after being diagnosed with it himself as a young man.
Mr Hitchens, 66, said: 'Sometimes people are a bit embarrassed about bowel cancer but that is something the fund, in Bobby's name, has been so successful at trying to change over the years.
'It's not for everyone standing up in a room full of people and talking about your poo, but I felt comfortable doing that because I know what difference it makes spreading awareness of bowel cancer, and the Bobby Moore Fund has given me the platform to do that and hopefully reach as many men as possible.'
A petition to create a posthumous award for Bobby has now passed 174 signatures, and has been supported by the likes of 1966 hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst, former England captains Bryan Robson and Terry Butcher, and Three Lions regulars including Frank Lampard, Stuart Pearce and Les Ferdinand.
Fellow bowel cancer survivor Matt Black said the charity shone a light on an unglamorous disease by using Bobby's name to target men who might not otherwise pay attention to symptoms or get checked out.
The 60-year-old property developer from London said: 'The Bobby Moore Fund has given me a platform and a voice.
'Post my operation I was very keen to talk about my situation, how I got through it, what are the signs to look out for, and I became incredibly passionate about that.
'Until 'Bowel Babe' Dame Deborah James came to prominence a few years ago, there was no one really advocating the issues around bowel cancer, about cancer research.
'It wasn't linked to an individual and the Bobby Moore Fund drove that force really hard for last 30 years.
'Middle aged blokes especially don't talk about it, yet Bobby has turned tragedy into something positive, given recognition through sport and through football to the awareness and the issues and the concerns surrounding bowel cancer.
'By linking it with sports, as he has done, it has made his reach beyond what you would normally expect.'
He added: 'It is right that he is recognised for this fantastic dedication to saving lives.'

Holidaymakers are making a critical mistake that is putting them at risk of a deadly Victorian skin disease, an expert has warned. According to sleep specialist Martin Seeley, dumping your luggage on a hotel bed could put you at risk of scabies—even in the fanciest of places. The microscopic mites that cause the infection are often found burrowed into bed linen and mattresses, and can easily jump into bags and ultimately travel home with you, he warned. Instead, he told The Mirror, travellers should keep bags elevated on a chair and stool and if you're worried the room isn't clean 'only take out what you need'. Mr Seeley's alert comes amid a 74 per cent increase in scabies cases in NHS hospitals across the country between 2023 and 2024, as well as a 35 per cent rise in infestations of bed bugs since 2022. The highly infectious condition is caused by tiny mites that work their way into the skin, and can spread via person-to-person contact. It causes intense itching, which is mostly noticed at night, typically between the fingers, or around your wrists, elbows, waist and genitals. It can also be accompanied by small, red bumps or track-like burrows on your skin, according to Mr Seeley. 'When staying in hotels or holiday rentals, a quick inspection can go a long way,' he said. 'Check mattress seams, bed frames, and behind headboards before settling in and unpacking your belongings'. Telltale signs of bed bugs meanwhile, are 'small reddish-brown spots on your sheets, moulted skin, or clusters of tiny bites, often in a line or zig-zag pattern,' said Mr Seeley. 'You'll usually find bed bugs in the seams and folds of your mattress if they have decided to take residence.' If you've returned home and discovered bed bugs, you should act quickly, he warned. 'When attempting to eradicate bed bugs, begin by vacuuming thoroughly and remember to dispose of the collected dirt immediately in an outside bin. 'Wash and dry all bedding or clothes… and consider steam cleaning your sofa in case they've transferred there too.' As for scabies: 'Wash all bedding, towels, and clothing in hot water (at least 60°C)… any items that cannot be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for at least 72 hours. 'You should also make sure that anyone in your household who may have been exposed is treated at the same time to prevent re-infestation.' The NHS advises seeking advice from a pharmacist if you believe you have scabies, who can recommend a cream or lotion. However you should see a GP if you have a child under the age of two, and they or someone in your household has symptoms of scabies. Similarly you should see a doctor if you have skin that may be infected, have eczema, notice crusted or flaky skin, or if symptoms persist two to four weeks after treatment. Most commonly bed bug bites cause itchiness, swelling and welts, which can be relieved by taking and antihistamine and keeping the room cool, he suggested. He added: 'Trimming your nails can prevent you from scratching too hard in your sleep and causing further infection.' Protesters urge Wimbledon to cut ties with Barclays over Israel business deals
Pro-Palestinian protesters urged Wimbledon to drop Barclays as a sponsor Monday because of the British bank's business dealings with Israel. About two dozen protesters from Palestine Solidarity Campaign demonstrated by the main entrance of the All England Club as thousands of fans arrived for Day 1 of the tournament. 'They're the bank for the arms companies that are obviously supplying weapons to Israel,' protester Khalid Zalmay told The Associated Press. 'We should not be arming Israel, we should not be allowing anybody to facilitate arming them, and I think ties should be cut with Israel, the same way that ties were cut with Russia.' One protester held a sign that said Barclays is a 'sponsor of Wimbledon and genocide.' Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 people in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack that sparked the Israel-Hamas war. Israel's military response has led to the death of 56,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
