Haas opens up on Broncos future, 'weird' Origin opener
Payne Haas couldn't imagine himself playing for another NRL club, shutting down the possibility of a move from Brisbane.
The best prop in the NRL is without a contract beyond 2026 so could negotiate with rival clubs from November, including the cashed-up Perth Bears franchise that enters the competition from 2027.
Haas would be a contender for the NRL's highest salary if he made the move west and has the chance to scope out the city next week, when he spearheads NSW's bid for a State of Series series win at Optus Stadium.
But after Haas' agent told AAP last week his client was settled in Brisbane, the 25-year-old reiterated he was hopeful of a new deal at the Broncos.
"We want to stay in Brisbane. That's the main priority," Haas said at the Blues' camp in Leura.
"We know where we both stand and I couldn't see myself playing for another club. Hopefully we get that deal done. If not, it is what it is.
"My family's there (in Brisbane), we love it and there would be no point in my leaving."
The Broncos' recent struggles have not swayed Haas from his desire to play on at the club who signed him as a teenager.
But Haas admitted he breathed a sigh of a relief after Saturday's emphatic defeat of Gold Coast, which snapped a four-game losing streak for Michael Maguire's side.
"It's a bit of relief. We're in a bit of a crap patch there," he said.
"(The scrutiny) is a bit intense up there. I haven't seen anything like it, to be honest. But all the boys are doing well up there. It's pretty easy to manage when you've got a good group.
"Honestly, it helps, winning. We're working so hard in club land. It just hurts not winning. To get that win, coming into (NSW) camp, it's a bit easier."
A quadriceps injury troubled Haas during camp for the Origin series opener but he nevertheless took man of the match honours in a dominant win for the Blue.
Haas is relishing the chance for an uninterrupted week at training ahead of Origin II on June 18.
"It was a bit weird, that first camp, I wasn't sure if I was playing or not at the start of the week," he said.
"I'm pretty grateful that I get to train with the boys all week and get the combos right because I felt a bit underdone going into that first game.
"I was bit worried but it all turned out well."

Police have the authority to charge individuals for threats made through social media and this incident isn't the first of its kind. In 2021, two men were charged after sending abusive or threatening messages to NRL star Latrell Mitchell on social media.

It was an eventful evening for Daly Cherry-Evans on Friday night, with the Manly captain grabbed by a rogue pitch invader after Manly's loss to the Gold Coast Titans. The Titans thumped the Sea Eagles 28-8 in a surprise result that leaves Manly's finals hopes hanging in the balance. Manly enforced injured in big blow In a big blow for Manly, Haumole Olakau'atu suffered a dislocated shoulder and is facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines. 'He dislocated his shoulder there so he'll get scans over the weekend and if there's bone damage then potentially you have to do reconstruction,' Seibold said. 'If it's muscle only or the ligaments only then potentially you can rehab it over six weeks but he's going to be gone for a while. 'But just summed up the night you know he's going for a try and dislocates his shoulder, so we will miss him of course. He is a quality player.' Seibold admitted his side were outplayed by the last placed Titans. 'We were outplayed, defensively we missed far too many tackles, which is an attitude thing,' Seibold said. 'We actually started really well the first 10 minutes, but after that we were well outplayed so we couldn't get ourselves back in the contest.' Seibold was pressed on why his team has been so inconsistent this season. 'I think mate, it comes back to attitude, being consistent individually, collectively, that's not just the players, that's the staff who've got to come up with some answers because we're a really good footy team, right?' Seibold said. 'Like in our first month of footy, outstanding this year, even like two weeks ago, well three weeks ago, very good against the Broncos and a couple weeks earlier they were really good against the Cowboys, but it's the story of our season. I think we missed the jump there, Titans made us pay.' Seibold took ownership of the side's preparation as they currently sit outside the top eight. 'We've done it every away trip this year, we did it up in Townsville, played really well up there,' Seibold said. Cherry-Evans saved some praise for former teammate Kieran Foran, who was brilliant against his old side. 'He's a good friend and one of the great competitors of our game,' Cherry-Evans said. 'So there was absolutely no doubt he was coming out here tonight to put it over his old side and he did exactly that tonight, he was really good wasn't he?'
