Top 10 injury news of Lions 2024 season - No. 3: Alim McNeill
After losing their most important defensive lineman, Aidan Hutchinson, on October 13, 2024, the last thing the Lions could afford was another major loss along the line. That's exactly what happened two months later when their second-most important defensive lineman, Alim McNeill, tore his ACL.
This injury was brutal because not only did it impact the 2024 season, it will have a significant impact on the 2025 season as well.
No. 10: Alex Anzalone's forearm
No. 9: Ifeatu Melifonwu's turbulent year
No. 8: Christian Mahogany's delayed debut
No. 7: James Houston's ill-fated comeback
No. 6: David Montgomery's mysterious knee
No. 5: Carlton Davis jaw fracture
No. 4: The fortuitous offense

McNeill lands hard and awkwardly on an extended right leg. He immediately feels something is wrong.
IMPACT OF INJURY
McNeill missed the final three games of the regular season. The Lions were able to overcome his loss and win those games securing the #1 seed and bye.
However, the lack of impact along the defensive line was a glaring problem in the playoff loss to the Commanders. Stopping the run and pressuring the passer were both inadequate, and McNeill would have made a difference in both aspects.
INTERESTING CONTRACTUAL NOTE
Just two months prior to his ACL tear, McNeill signed a four year, $97 million extension ($55 million guaranteed) tying him to the team through the 2028 season. This is a good example of why it is often wise for a player to sign the big-money extension as soon as possible.
OUTLOOK
Unfortunately, due the late-season timing of the injury, the upcoming 2025 season will be significantly impacted as well. An ACL is usually around a 10-11 month recovery. This timeline would give him a chance to return in October, but a mid-November return is likely more realistic.
When he returns, don't expect him to immediately be the same player, as it will take him some time to get back to full strength and confidence.
The good news is that ACL recoveries are very reliable, and McNeill should return to his typical high level of play at some point - hopefully by the end of the 2025 season. Aiding his recovery is his youthful age of 25, which will help him to continue making plays like this....

PFF ranks Packers' receiving corps 21st overall heading into 2025—fair or foul?

PFF ranks Packers' receiving corps 21st overall heading into 2025—fair or foul? There's no denying the potential inside the Green Bay Packers' receiver room. But with all that potential comes a lot of uncertainty about how the group will perform on game day this season. On paper, the Packers have surrounded quarterback Jordan Love with enough weapons to field a top-ranked passing attack next season. However, until Green Bay's receivers live up to their perceived talent, the room will continue to carry plenty of question marks heading into 2025. Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus ranked all 32 receiving corps ahead of the 2025 season, placing the Packers at an unremarkable 21st overall. Sikkema wrote: 'Running back Josh Jacobs led the Packers in PFF receiving grade (89.2). It was a career-high mark, but the rest of the pass-catching unit left something to be desired. The team's 8.1% drop rate was the fourth highest in the league, and only Jayden Reed surpassed 800 receiving yards. Still, Tucker Kraft emerged as Green Bay's go-to tight end with a 71.0 PFF receiving grade, and Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Christian Watson all recorded PFF receiving grades between 71.0 and 73.0. First-round draft pick Matthew Golden should help the cause. There are a lot of names to consider in the Packers' receiving corps, but none truly strike fear into defenses right now.' Overall, Sikkema's reasoning is sound. None of the Packers' pass catchers kept opposing defenses up at night last season. They also had glaring issues holding onto the football, finishing tied for the third-most drops in the league. Individually, Reed got off to a blazing hot start but struggled with drops and saw his production dip drastically in the second half of the season. After a rookie season containing flashes, Dontayvion Wicks was a breakout candidate entering 2024. But he caught only 52.7% of his targets, which ranked dead last among receivers with at least 70 targets, per PFF. Meanwhile, Doubs had become one of Love's most trusted targets but missed four games last season due to a suspension, injuries, and an illness. Matt LaFleur has spoken highly of Doubs' offseason performance, and the team has no concerns about his health moving forward despite two concussions last season. Now entering his fourth NFL season, Doubs has yet to eclipse 700 receiving yards. He may need to have his best year yet if he hopes to stick around beyond his rookie deal. One of the offense's biggest X-factors since joining the team in 2022, Christian Watson, could miss most of next season after suffering an ACL tear in the regular season finale against Chicago. While Watson's size, athleticism, and talent are unmatched in Green Bay, injuries have kept him from becoming a dominant, game-changing receiver. Unless something changes, he could also be nearing the end of his time with the Packers. The biggest thing holding back all of the aforementioned receivers is consistency. All four have looked like high-level playmakers at different points in their careers, but no defense is overly worried about any of them. That could change with the addition of Golden, the team's first first-round pick at receiver in over two decades. Golden—and even third-rounder Savion Williams—appear to be positive additions, but expecting rookies to transform an offense overnight is foolishly optimistic. On a positive note, Sikkema highlighted Jacobs and Kraft as bright spots in last year's passing game. With Jacobs' well-rounded skill set and Kraft's continued development, the team doesn't have to worry about its running back or tight end if both stay healthy. At the end of the day, rankings are offseason busy work. That said, the urgency inside Green Bay's receiver room is very real. Even if no true No. 1 option emerges for Love, it would still be a victory if the group collectively starts to strike fear into opposing defenses.

A true freshman the secret to life after Phil Mafah? Fox Sport thinks so

A true freshman the secret to life after Phil Mafah? Fox Sport thinks so The Tigers are returning the most production of any team in college football. But the one area where Clemson suffered the most after the 2024-25 season is at the running back position. Phil Mafah was a certified dog at tailback, but now he's a Dallas Cowboy after being selected 239th overall in the seventh round in the 2025 NFL draft. Behind Mafah's team-leading 1,115 yards and eight rushing touchdowns, only quarterback Cade Klubnik rushed for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. So, who can Dabo Swinney find to replace Mafah? Clemson football in 2025- Who replaces Phil Mafah? Most likely, the rushing production will be by committee. The leading running back behind Mafah was Jay Haynes, but he tore his ACL against SMU in the ACC Championship. He will most likely return by the start of the season, but at what capacity? That leaves Keith Adams Jr., David Eziomume, Jarvis Green, wideout-turned-RB Adam Randall, and finally, true freshman Gideon Davidson. And while Davidson might be a freshman, don't be surprised to see him as a major piece in the Tigers' rushing game next season. Randall started with the first-team offense in the spring game ahead of Davidson, but the early enrollee showcased his skills, too, especially in the passing game. Gideon Davidson a top 10 impact freshman With all the uncertainty at RB, Fox Sports college football and basketball writer Michael Cohen believes that's all Gideon needs to get his foot in the door. As an RB in high school, the 94-rated four-star (per 247Sports) eclipsed 1,000 all four years he played for the Liberty Christian Academy Bulldogs. In his final two seasons, he broke 2,000 yards, including an out-of-this-world junior campaign: 2,716 yards, 43 touchdowns, and 12.9 yards per carry. National recruiting analyst Brian Dohn had this to say about the Virginia native: "[Davidson is a] patient runner with vision and knows how to set up blocks. Quick feet with stop-start ability. Accelerates well through the hole. Has speed to finish runs. Best suited to run between tackles. Body control to make subtle cuts at second level. Difficult to arm tackle. Shows cut-back ability. instinctual runner can make defenders miss in hole. Solid pass catcher who lines up wide… Can be early contributor in high-level college program." Gideon is only one of two non-five-star recruits on Cohen's list. Defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart at USC is the other four-star. The rest of the list includes the No. 1 prospect from the 2025 class, Michiagan's five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, Oregon wide receiver Dakorian Moore, cornerback Devin Sanchez from Ohio State, offensive tackle David Sanders at Tennessee, Texas' WR Kaliq Lockett, CB from LSU DJ Pickett, Michigan OT Andrew Babaloa, and finally, Linkon Cure, a tight end at Kansas State.

CBS Sports includes 8 Lions in Top 100 players of 2025 list

A list released Tuesday includes eight Detroit Lions among the best 100 players in the NFL entering the 2025-26 season. CBS Sports senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco's NFL Top 100 players of 2025 list is headlined by star players at the top including Patrick Mahomes at No. 1 and Saquon Barkley at No. 3. The first Lions player doesn't appear until outside the top 10. Advertisement Lions superstar edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson slots in at No. 15 coming off of last season's injury that put a halt to his Defensive Player of the Year campaign. To his credit, Prisco ranked Hutchinson No. 47 before the start of last season. Hutchinson fell below other top pass rushers on this year's list including Myles Garrett (No. 2), Micah Parsons (No. 10), and T.J. Watt (No. 11). He's just a few spots ahead of Chris Jones (No. 18) and Trey Hendrickson (No. 26). The next Lion ranked is right tackle Penei Sewell at No. 21. Prisco acknowledged in his list that Sewell is in the conversation for best right tackle in the NFL, but did have him ranked at No. 17 in last season's list. The only right tackle ranked ahead of Sewell is longtime Eagles O-lineman Lane Johnson (No. 12). Advertisement A couple more scrolls down this list is running back Jahmyr Gibbs at No. 32. Gibbs had a stellar 2024-25 season while splitting time with David Montgomery and is expected to build on that this season. Prisco didn't have Gibbs ranked ahead of last season. He only trails Barkley at No. 3 and Derrick Henry at No. 14 on this year's list. The gap at this point in the list is a bit jarring, getting all the way outside the top 50 before getting to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown at No. 58. St. Brown finished second in the NFL in catches last season and was ranked No. 39 on Prisco's list entering last season. St. Brown surprisingly fell behind several other receivers on this list including Brian Thomas Jr. (No. 44) and Malik Nabers (No. 45). Even sitting a spot behind Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield at No. 57 seems like a stretch. Advertisement The list lumps the Lions' talented safety duo fairly close together at this point in the list with Kerby Joseph at No. 60 and Brian Branch at No. 65. Neither of them were ranked on Prisco's list last season, but they were one of the bright spots on a struggling defensive unit by the time the playoffs rolled around. Quarterback Jared Goff comes in at No. 77 after having the best year of his career last season. He moved down only one spot from last season's list. He's several spots below peers like Jalen Hurts (No. 52) and Mayfield (No. 57), but is sitting well ahead of Dak Prescott (No. 90) and Jordan Love (No. 92). The last Lion on this list is tight end Sam LaPorta at No. 86. It's a steep drop from his spot on last season's list (No. 58), but his numbers did see a steep decline compared to his rookie season. Still, LaPorta is ranked ahead of Travis Kelce (No. 96) and is one of only five tight ends included in the top 100. You can see Prisco's full list here.
