Khammam/Sathupalli: The coming monsoon could well test the readiness of the State's irrigation machinery. Ahead of this, in a critical review of irrigation projects in the region, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has issued a firm four-month deadline for the completion of the Yathalakunta tunnel, a component of the Sitarama Lift Irrigation Scheme (SLIS).
On Friday, the Minister, accompanied by Khammam and Bhadradri Kothagudem District Collectors Muzammil Khan and Jitesh V Patil, respectively, conducted an inspection at the Yathalakunta tunnel site in Sathupalli mandal. Local MLAs Jare Adinarayana (Aswaraopet) and Matta Ragamayi (Sathupalli) also participated in the review.
Speaking on the occasion, Tummala said that 1.2 km of the 1.8 km of Sathupalli trunk tunnel has been completed. 'The pending work of 600 m should be completed in four months, if necessary, another ladder should be installed, and necessary aqueducts and other structures should be completed by then,' he asserted.
Tummala said that the necessary land acquisition should be carried out in coordination with the legislators. 'The Godavari waters must be made available to farmers this monsoon,' he declared, adding that significant investments into the Rajiv Canal and Sitarama project must yield visible results this year.
He highlighted that the Chief Minister has already inaugurated the main canal and three pump houses under SLIS. The upcoming focus will be on commissioning the Rajiv Link Canal, launching the Maredupaka Lift Irrigation Scheme at Tummalapalli in Pinapaka, and releasing water into tanks across Kothagudem.
Moreover, the minister announced that around 25,000 acres of new ayacut would be developed and 1.3 lakh acres stabilised under the Wyra project. He assured farmers that even if Nagarjunasagar water falls short, there will be no irrigation crisis in the region.
Tummala reiterated that the project was undertaken with the aspiration of making Khammam and Kothagudem districts fertile.
He said that Sathupalli, Pinapaka, Madhira, Wyra, and Ashwaraopet constituencies should receive irrigation water this year itself.
With respect to the Sitarama main canal, he instructed that it must be cleaned and that if water is released, it should be ensured that it flows into the Wyra project as soon as possible.

Tummala terms Eatala Rajender's remarks on Kaleshwaram as ‘motivated and misleading'

Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao strongly refuted the comments of BJP MP and his former colleague in the BRS government, Eatala Rajender, before the PC Ghose Commission on the Kaleshwaram project that alleged his role in the clearance of the project. 'Eatala's comments on me are completely false, and one wonders whether they were made under external pressure,' the Minister remarked at a press conference here on Saturday while questioning the motives behind them. Mr. Tummala clarified that the sub-committee he had referenced was not related to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project but to look into other pending projects under the broader umbrella of irrigation, such as Devadula, Kantanapalli, and Dummugudem. 'It was never constituted specifically for Kaleshwaram project,' he explained. The Minister also revealed that the Kaleshwaram project never received formal Cabinet approval. The KCR Cabinet did not deliberate or come forward with a decision on the project. The works were executed merely based on an executive order, he argued. The Minister announced that he would submit the sub-committee report related to irrigation projects to the Kaleshwaram Commission suo motu, and would fully cooperate with the panel. 'At the appropriate time, I will tell the Commission what really happened with the Kaleshwaram project,' he said. He further said, 'My suggestions at that time were always in the interest of the people and farmers.' He said he is ready for a transparent discussion with anyone, but misleading the people with false statements is not acceptable.

Tummala orders action against audit officials

Hyderabad: Expressing anger over the lack of audits of apex cooperative societies over the past ten years, Agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao ordered action to be taken against the responsible audit officials . He held a review meeting with various wings of the agriculture department and instructed officials to take immediate steps against those accountable. He also directed that all apex cooperative societies be audited. The minister further instructed officials to proceed with the construction of warehouses and cold storage facilities under the marketing department, utilising NABARD funds. He emphasised the need for strict management of farmers' markets to ensure that only farmers are permitted to sell their produce. He also called for the installation of CCTV cameras in all markets and Rythu Bazars (farmers' market), and inquired about the progress in setting up digital boards within these markets. Additionally, he advised marketing officials to review proposals from public representatives concerning the reorganisation of market yards, and to implement those that comply with regulations. The minister enquired whether crops were being harvested from the 2,800 farmers who planted oil palm in 2021. If not, he suggested identifying the reasons and informing farmers of the necessary corrective measures. He emphasised that off-type plants must not be allowed into farmers' fields under any circumstances and instructed that the Oilfed organisation should serve as a model for all other companies .
