Elephant Seal's surprise visit to Gordon's Bay streets has a happy ending

It's not every day that a Southern elephant seal makes an appearance in a residential neighbourhood, but that's exactly what happened in Gordon's Bay when a sub-adult male was discovered lounging alongside Sir Lowry's Pass Road, nearly one kilometre inland.
The call came in at 06:20 and by 07:00, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA had arrived to assess the situation.
What followed was a nearly nine-hour rescue operation involving a well-coordinated effort across multiple agencies to ensure the sub-adult male's safety and eventual return to a more suitable coastal environment.
Southern elephant seals ( Mirounga leonina ) are the world's largest seal species and are usually found in sub-Antarctic regions.
While sightings in South Africa are rare, occasional lone individuals, typically young males, do haul out along our coastline during moulting or rest phases.
But making it inland and into a neighbourhood is, by all accounts, highly unusual.
'Wild animals don't always follow the script, and this seal's unexpected journey into a residential area created real cause for concern,' said Belinda Abraham, Spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
'With so many moving parts – traffic, onlookers, and a massive marine mammal in distress – it took rapid coordination and clear focus to keep everyone safe'.
While the seal appeared to be unharmed, his urban detour posed risks – both to himself and to motorists.
With the assistance of the Law Enforcement, Traffic Services, SAPS, Gordon's Bay Security and Gordon's Bay Medical Ambulance Services, the area was secured and traffic redirected while the SPCA, City of Cape Town's Coastal Management and Marine Unit, SANParks, Two Oceans Aquarium, Shark Spotters and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) stepped in.
The SPCA monitored the seal's welfare throughout the incident, including during sedation by a wildlife veterinarian and the difficult process of loading the animal into the City's large game capture trailer.
By late afternoon, the seal had been given the all clear by the veterinarian and safely transported to Koggel Bay, where his recovery from sedation was monitored before our team left the site.
'It truly takes a village says Abraham. We're incredibly grateful to everyone who stepped up today – for their professionalism, their compassion, and their quick response to an animal in distress.'
Residents who encounter wildlife in urban spaces are reminded not to approach, feed, or attempt to assist the animals, but rather to contact the Cape of Good Hope SPCA for assistance.

SARS confirms dates for 2025 tax season

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially announced the all-important dates for the 2025 tax season , urging taxpayers to prepare early and ensure their personal details are up to date. According to SARS, the tax season for individual non-provisional taxpayers will begin on 21 July 2025 and close on 20 October 2025. The period for provisional taxpayers and trusts will run from 21 July 2025 to 19 January 2026. In addition, auto-assessments – a process whereby SARS pre-populates tax returns for eligible taxpayers – will commence two weeks before tax season officially opens. These will be rolled out between 7 July and 20 July 2025. 'All taxpayers who have not been processed through auto-assessments will be required to file their returns manually,' SARS said in a statement. The revenue authority noted that some individuals may not be required to submit a return at all. Specifically, taxpayers earning less than R500 000 per year may be exempt – provided they meet a set of specific criteria, such as receiving income from only one employer and having no additional deductions or income streams. SARS has also highlighted the importance of ensuring that banking and contact details are correct on eFiling. Updated details are essential for the swift processing of refunds and for security purposes. 'If you need to change your bank details, you must first check that your security contact details, including your email address and cell phone number, are up to date on eFiling,' the agency added. Category Opening date Closing date Auto-Assessments 7 July 2025 20 July 2025 Individuals (non-provisional) 21 July 2025 20 October 2025 Provisional Taxpayers 21 July 2025 19 January 2026 Trusts 21 July 2025 19 January 2026 Taxpayers are encouraged to begin gathering supporting documents – including IRP5s, medical aid certificates, and retirement annuity records – in advance to avoid last-minute filing issues. SARS has reiterated that if no changes have occurred in a taxpayer's banking or security contact details, no action is needed. WhatsApp group linked to July 2021 unrest lands four in court

The Hawks confirmed that more arrests are imminent. The Roodepoort Magistrates Court has granted R1 500 bail each to four suspects who appeared for incitement to commit public violence in connection with the July 2021 unrest. Bekuyise Cebekhulu, 58, from KwaZulu-Natal; Jimmy Sibeko, 44; Busisiwe Skhosana, 52; and Bogadi Mahisa, 49, from Gauteng, made their first appearance before the court on Tuesday morning. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) authorised arrest warrants for the suspects, who then handed themselves over through their legal representatives. Bail for suspected instigators of July 2021 unrest The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said they arrested the four suspects in connection with the unrest that took place in July 2021. The unrest in 2021 resulted in more than 350 people losing their lives and cost R50 billion in damages. The protests, violence, and looting erupted across the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng provinces following the imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma. ALSO READ: Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla wants terrorism charges dropped as trial dates set Hawks' spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the suspects, who were allegedly supporters of Zuma, participated in a WhatsApp group named ZUMA REAL ACTIVIST 100% and other chat groups on the platform. 'They'd post inciting messages which it is believed to have led to the public violence as well as the looting of retail stores in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal at the time,' Mogale said. The Hawks' Serious Organised Crime, Crimes Against the State (CATS) in Gauteng carried out extensive investigations. Accused of fuelling the unrest through WhatsApp messages Upon completion of the investigations, the DPP decided to prosecute those who posted messages which led to the unrest. The Roodepoort Magistrates Court granted Cebekhulu, Sibeko, Skhosana and Mahisa bail of R1 500 each. The suspects are expected to appear in court again on 2 July. Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, welcomed the arrests and commended the investigating team. 'DPCI shall continue to secure in court the attendance of anyone against whom sufficient evidence of committing a national priority offence is obtained, without fear, favour or prejudice,' Maj Gen Kadwa said. The Hawks confirmed that more arrests are imminent. Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla charged with terrorism The former president's daughter and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party MP Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla is also a suspect. She appeared at the Durban Magistrate's Court in January. In January last year, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) found there was no discernible connection between Zuma's incarceration and the violent unrest that occurred in July 2021. The SAHRC concluded that the timing of the events of the July unrest 'coincided' with Zuma's jailing and, therefore, 'it could not find evidence to link the two events'. Here is the official petrol price for June 2025

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has confirmed the official fuel price adjustments for this month which will take effect from midnight on Tuesday, 3 June. May saw volatility in the oil price and the strengthening of the rand against the dollar relative to April. This resulted in a consistent over-recovery in fuel prices. However, a hike in the general fuel levy from the latest budget undercut this by around 15 cents per litre. This has translated to a small reduction in petrol prices in June. Petrol will be cut by 5 cents per litre for 93 and 95, and there will be a decrease of 37 cents per litre for diesel.
