Spanish footballer Hidalgo dies of cancer aged 32
Spanish side Racing Santander have paid tribute to their former midfielder Nico Hidalgo who has died of lung cancer aged 32.Hidalgo played 73 times for Santander between 2018 and 2020.He started his career with his hometown club Motril before joining Granada and playing for their reserve side.In August 2014 he signed for Juventus but was immediately loaned back to Granada before another loan move to Cadiz.He joined Extramadura in 2020 but did not play and was diagnosed with lung cancer the following year, which led to his retirement.Santander said his death was an "irreparable loss" while Granada described him as "an excellent footballer and a great person".Extramadura added: "We want to express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. We send you all our love and strength in these difficult times."

The Germany international and Barca captain is said to be outraged over attempts to force him out of the club. Ter Stegen is still under contract until 2028 but is refusing to be pushed out of the Catalan side despite an apparent insistence from club chiefs. The 33-year-old missed much of last season through injury, making just nine appearances, and the Blaugrana are focusing their efforts on signing another shotstopper. Joan Garcia, who has been linked to Arsenal and Manchester United, is top of their list and nearing a move. Ter Stegen was unable to claim his spot upon his return in 2024/25, from Wojciech Szczesny, as Hansi Flick's first choice. Now it is claimed Barcelona president Joan Laporta has told members of the board that Ter Stegen must be sold with Garcia's arrival. It has even been touted that the La Liga champions have offered to terminate the ex-Borussia Monchengladbach star's contract if they pay him a year's salary. Spanish outlet Sport claim that Ter Stegen has been 'deeply hurt' and believes that there has been 'direct attack' on his 'professional character' in order to force him out of the club. The Germany international is reported to accuse figures of purposefully leaking information to damage his reputation. Sporting director Deco will be tasked with explaining Barcelona's stance to Ter Stegen and his camp in the search for an amicable resolution. But, fully recovered after last season, the goalkeeper is keen to fight for a starting spot if Flick allows it. The Spanish giants hold on to hope that Ter Stegen's World Cup aspirations will see him unwilling to risk not playing next term however. The veteran has been left aghast and outraged at being left out in the cold after shortening his recovery from injury as first-choice goalkeeper and captain. With Garcia's arrival yet to be confirmed and Szczesny yet to commit to a two-year deal from Barcelona, Ter Stegen was quick to point out that he is currently one of just two goalkeepers set to be at Barca next season. "No one has told me about this, so I don't know the situation," Ter Stegen said when asked about his future. 'I'm not worried," he added. "I know that I will be at Barcelona next year. Arsenal have an agreement to sign Spain international Martini Zubimendi but a deal is not yet over the line for the midfielder who is drawing late interest from Real Madrid this summer Arsenal are all geared up to sign Martin Zubimendi - but may still have reason to sweat over his decision. While Mikel Arteta's side have an agreement over payments to Sociedad, in a familiar scenario, Zubimendi himself has suggested his future is not resolved. Asked whether he could yet remain with his hometown club, the 26-year-old noted he did not know where his future would lie. "Of course there are options, but it's true that it seems like it's going to be a different, long summer, and I don't know how it will end," he told Radio Nacional. "I don't think thinking about that right now is my priority. I'm here with the national team, which I think is already quite demanding, and if I have to say something, then I will." Real Madrid have not given up on signing Zubimendi themselves however. New Los Blancos boss Xabi Alonso is even said to have made the player his primary target according to reports in Spain. And that could prove pivotal with it also claimed that Zubimendi would prefer to remain in Spain if he is to leave Anoeta Stadium. AS claim Zubimendi is 'attracted' to the idea of playing for Real Madrid under Alonso. The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich star previously coached Real Sociedad B. During that time, Zubimendi player under the Basque-born coach. If Zubimendi indicates that he is willing to turn down Arsenal in favour of a move to Real Madrid, the La Liga runners-up will attempt to negotiate a deal worth less than his £51m buy-out clause.
