Charges dropped against woman in Rhodes student death
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Charges have been dropped for a woman arrested in connection to the death of a Rhodes College student in 2021.
On Monday, Lori Frye's 10 charges — including facilitation of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and kidnapping — were dropped during disposition. She was arrested back in 2022 by U.S. Marshals.
Woman arrested in Rhodes student's death
This is all in connection to the death of Rhodes student Andrew Rainer.
Earlier this month, another suspect connected to the case, Rainess Holmes, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Holmes and three other suspects allegedly broke into a North McLean home where Rainer and others were staying. Those deadly shots were reportedly fired over an iPad.
The D.A.'s office says Holmes was involved but not the shooter.

Former jail employee and girlfriend of escaped New Orleans inmate arrested in connection with case
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with the U.S. Marshals have announced the arrest of a woman in connection to the May breakout at the Orleans Parish jail in New Orleans. U.S. Marshals officials said Darriana Burton, 28, was arrested in New Orleans on Monday, June 9. She had been wanted on a warrant for conspiracy to commit simple escape, a felony, from the Louisiana Attorney General's Office. Burton is a former jail employee and the girlfriend of Derrick Groves, one of two inmates who is still at large after the escape, the Associated Press reported. The other at-large escapee has been identified as Antoine Massey. Groves, Massey, and eight other inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish Prison on May 16 by yanking open a faulty cell door, removing a toilet, crawling through a hole, and scaling a barbed wire fence in the early morning hours when a lone guard left to get food. Two days before the escape, Groves made a FaceTime video call to Burton using a jail-issued iPad, authorities said. During that call, she helped him speak with a man whom police did not identify. The conversation was 'intentionally vague' and appeared to coordinate communication on other, unmonitored lines, according to a police affidavit for Burton's arrest. The exchange showed Burton's direct role in helping with Groves' escape, police said in the arrest affidavit. Burton and Groves 'were in an on-again, off-again relationship for three years,' dating back to the time when she was still working in the jail, authorities said. Burton began working at the jail in 2022, but was fired after being 'arrested and charged for bringing contraband into the jail and malfeasance in office in 2023,' the attorney general's office explained. The attorney general's office reported that the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office refused the charges in 2024. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Fugitive's girlfriend charged with aiding breakout at New Orleans jail where she once worked
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Authorities arrested a former New Orleans jail employee on Monday and accused her of aiding in the 10-inmate breakout at the facility last month, which included an escape by her boyfriend — a convicted murderer. The former jail employee, Darriana Burton, 28, is one of at least 16 people arrested and accused of aiding the escape of the inmates on May 16. Authorities said only two remain at large: her boyfriend, Derrick Groves, and Antoine Massey, who is facing charges of rape, kidnapping and domestic battery. The group of inmates escaped by yanking open a faulty cell door, removing a toilet, crawling through a hole and scaling a barbed wire fence in the early morning hours when a lone guard left to get food. Two days before the escape, Groves made a FaceTime video call to Burton using a jail-issued iPad. During that call, she helped him speak with a man who police did not identify. The conversation was 'intentionally vague' and appeared to coordinate communication on other, unmonitored lines, according to a police affidavit for Burton's arrest. In another call shortly after, the same man warned Groves against escaping, saying it would be a 'bad move' that would trigger a manhunt. He told Groves to seek release via the judicial system. The exchange showed Burton's direct role in helping with Groves' escape, according to the arrest affidavit. Burton faces a felony charge for conspiracy to commit simple escape. According to other police reports, Burton also allegedly 'picked up' and transported another fugitive, Lenton Vanburen, to a relative's home during his escape. Burton began working at the jail in 2022 and was fired the following year after she was arrested on allegations of bringing a folding knife and a bag of Cheetos containing tobacco and marijuana into the jail. The charges were dropped in part due to her lack of criminal history, and she 'successfully completed' a pretrial diversion program, the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office told The Associated Press. 'I categorically deny any involvement in introducing contraband into the jail or assisting in any escape,' Burton said May 30 in a text message to The Associated Press. 'These allegations are false and I intend to fully defend myself through the proper legal channels.' Agents with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service coordinated Burton's arrest after obtaining a warrant on May 27. She was taken into custody in the Plaquemines Parish jail, authorities said. Burton and Groves 'were in an on-again, off-again relationship for three years," dating back to the time when she was still working in the jail, authorities said. 'We will continue to pursue anyone and everyone who has aided and abetted these criminals. We will find you, arrest you, and prosecute you to the full extent of the law," Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said in a statement. 'We will arrest all aiders and abettors, and we will eventually get Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves back to prison where they belong.' ___

Bryan man sentenced to 40 years for beating ex-girlfriend
BRYAN, Texas (FOX 44) – A Bryan man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for beating his ex-girlfriend. The Brazos County District Attorney's Office says 32-year-old Olajawon Agube Mason was sentenced on Friday. He received 40 years for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, plus 40 years for Assault Family Violence Strangulation with a Previous Conviction as well as ten years in prison for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Judge Kyle Hawthorne also made affirmative findings of family violence and the use of a deadly weapon. Mason was originally sentenced to two years in prison in February 2019, after a jury trial in which he was convicted of Burglary of a Habitation. In this case, the jury heard evidence that Mason had broken into the home of his girlfriend, kicked in the door to her bathroom, and strangled her. He had no prior criminal history. The D.A.'s Office says shortly after Mason was released from prison on September 15, 2022, police responded to the same address. Officers discovered the same victim as in the previous case. This time, the victim was severely beaten and required immediate medical attention. Medical personnel and police documented severe bruising and swelling to the victim's face, bleeding from her nose and ears, and extensive evidence of strangulation. The girlfriend reported that she had lost consciousness during the assault and had little memory of what occurred. Gang member sentenced for violent burglary of habitation The D.A.'s Office says police also spoke with the 9-1-1 caller, who identified herself as the sister of the victim. This witness reported that Mason pointed a firearm at her before locking himself in the bedroom with his girlfriend. The sister reported hearing significant banging from the room and her sister screaming, but she was not able to enter. The sister snuck out of the home and called 9-1-1. The two young children of Mason and the victim were inside the home at the time of the assault. Bryan Police responded quickly to the scene and witnessed Mason fleeing the home. Despite setting up a perimeter and employing drones and canine resources, Mason managed to evade authorities. The D.A.'s Office says Mason was placed on the Brazos County Domestic Violence High Risk Team List, and also on the Most Wanted List in Brazos County. Multiple law enforcement agencies both inside and outside of the county worked to apprehend Mason while he remained a fugitive. Mason was ultimately apprehended in January 2025 by the Bryan Police Department's Direct Deployment Team. As a result of finding the deadly weapon, Mason will have to serve half his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Both Mason's now ex-girlfriend and her sister received lifetime protective orders as part of the plea. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
