China bans all poultry imports from Brazil on bird flu case

CHINA has banned imports of all poultry products from Brazil after a bird flu outbreak was detected in the world's top exporter, halting a trade worth more than $1 billion.
Direct and indirect imports of all poultry and related products from Brazil are banned in order to prevent the importation of bird flu, China's customs agency said in a statement published late Friday. The agency also said all plants and animal waste arriving from Brazil must undergo disinfestation.
The sweeping ban from China, the largest buyer of Brazilian chicken meat, clouds the outlook for exports from the South American country. That comes even as the two nations work to bolster relations amid the ongoing global trade war launched by US President Donald Trump.
Earlier this month, Brazil halted chicken shipments to China and the European Union for 60 days after the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza was reported on a commercial farm in the South American nation.
Brazil, responsible for about a third of the world's chicken meat exports, shipped more than 10% of its products to China in 2024, according to data from the Department of Agriculture. The bilateral trade was worth about $1.5 billion in 2024, according to China customs data. –BLOOMBERG

Slight rebound as Bursa reopens from holiday weekend

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian equities rebounded on Tuesday following an extended weekend, although the market is expected to remain in consolidation moade as it awaits more clarity on the global trade situation. At the open, the FBM KLCI was up 4.37 points to 1,512.72, pulled higher by heavyweight stocks that were oversold at last Friday's close. TA Securities Research said blue chips are expected to remain in profit-taking consolidation mode this week as investors should remain cautious while they await further developments regarding the judgment against US President Donald Trump's trade policies. Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounding a potential cabinet reshuffle on the local political scene, and a lack of strong buying catalysts should also keep investors on the sidelines, it said. The broker said borth short- and medium-term technical momentum and trend indicators on the FBM KLCI are turning increasingly bearish. "Immediate index resistance is kept at 1,564 with next upside hurdles seen at the recent high of 1,586, followed by 1,610 ahead. Immediate support is maintained at 1,490, while stronger supports can be found at 1,465 and 1,444," it said in its market commentary. Among the heavyweights leading the rally, PETRONAS Dagangan rose 62 sen to RM20.32, Kuala Lumpur Kepong gained 40 sen to RM19.88 and Hong Leong Bank added 14 sen to RM19.72. Ringgit opens higher against us dollar amid tariff policy concerns

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit rebounded to open higher against the US dollar on Tuesday, as markets assessed the outlook for US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, an analyst said. At 8.03 am, the local note rose to 4.2165/2490 against the greenback from Friday's close of 4.2530/2605. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said the ringgit was supported by a weaker dollar, driven by renewed US-China trade tensions and concerns over possible new tariffs and taxes from Washington. He said the US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.11 per cent to 98.60 points from 99.00 at Friday's close, supporting other currencies as well. 'The comments from Beijing and Washington signal frustration over unmet trade commitments. 'Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounding Trump's proposed Section 899 'revenge tax' in the House-passed reconciliation bill and dovish expectations for the US Federal Reserve continue to weigh on the greenback,' he told Bernama. At the opening, the ringgit traded mixed against a basket of major currencies and ASEAN peers. It appreciated against the British pound to 5.7134/7574 from Friday's close of 5.7284/7385, but weakened versus the Japanese yen to 2.9567/9799 from 2.9531/9585, and slipped against the euro to 4.8270/8643 from 4.8169/8254. Against ASEAN currencies, the ringgit inched up against the Philippine peso to 7.57/7.63 from 7.62/7.64, but slipped versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2808/3066 from Friday's close of 3.2938/3002 and eased against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.4/261.5 from 260.4/261.1.
