Barcelona deal for teenage attacking prodigy very close to being finalised
Barcelona deal for teenage attacking prodigy very close to being finalised – report According to a fresh update from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona's deal for Portuguese forward Cardoso Varela is all but finalised. In fact, the 16-year-old is poised to become the next addition to Barça's evolving project, although the path to his signing has been far from smooth. Advertisement The club's sporting director, Deco, held decisive talks with Varela's representatives yesterday, signalling that the transfer is now in its final stages. Barcelona have long admired the talented left winger and have been monitoring his development closely. The original intention was to integrate him into the reserve team, but with Barça Atletic suffering relegation to the Second Division, the club is now considering keeping the player on loan at Dinamo Zagreb for another year. Details of the deal The financial structure of the deal appears to be relatively straightforward. Barcelona are expected to pay a fixed sum of €5 million for Varela, with a potential €20 million in performance-related add-ons. Advertisement These variables are tied to his development and eventual impact within the senior squad. Barcelona are close to sign Cardoso Varela. (Photo by) However, the operation has triggered discontent at FC Porto, where Varela began his football journey before moving abroad. Porto have raised objections to the deal, asserting that they still hold some claim to the player's rights. In response, they have sent formal communication to both Barcelona and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) seeking clarity on the nature of the transfer. Relationship with FC Porto The situation is particularly sensitive as Porto view Barça as a 'sister club' with whom they have shared a historically amicable relationship. Advertisement Although no formal breakdown in diplomatic ties has occurred, sources in Portugal suggest that Porto are frustrated by the lack of involvement or compensation in the deal. The matter remains under FIFA review, with Porto arguing that Varela's early exit from their academy should still entitle them to some consideration. In contrast, Dinamo Zagreb are reportedly already celebrating the move as a done deal. Local reports in Croatia suggest that the club has agreed on the financial package with Barcelona and are confident that the transfer will go through without further complications.

Real Madrid reassure ex-academy talent that they will do ‘everything' to sign him after Club World Cup
Real Madrid reassure ex-academy talent that they will do 'everything' to sign him after Club World Cup Xabi Alonso has arrived at Real Madrid with a clear plan and mental blueprint in place of how to take the team forward. Taking over after a season where the club failed to win any of the three major competitions, the pressure is on the manager to turn things around fast and he has thus wasted no time in communicating his requirements. Advertisement Two of his requested signings have been completed while the Franco Mastantuono deal is also all but complete. As relayed earlier today, however, the manager still has a list of three signings that he demands after the FIFA Club World Cup, and Alvaro Carreras is one of them. In constant contact Alonso sees Carreras to be an important cog in his plans for the season ahead and all signs point to the club accelerating his signing after the upcoming tournament. The initial idea was always to sign him before the Club World Cup, but Benfica's high asking price and tough negotiations complicated matters for Real Madrid. As relayed by MARCA, however, the club remain calm. Carreras' operation on hold for now. (Photo by) Advertisement The Merengues' representatives have even called Carreras to tell him that the club will do everything possible to sign him after the Club World Cup and to thus remain calm about his future. It has, after all, not been an easy set of weeks for the player who has been waiting for the call from Madrid confirming his move and immediate incorporation into the team. Instead, he is now playing the same event but for his current employers. From Manchester United's buyback clause to the clause in his contract that deemed the English club recipients of a bonus in case of a transfer, there have been numerous hurdles in Real Madrid's pursuit of Carreras. The hope, however, is that the steam will cool down after the Club World Cup and that a solution can be worked out. Real Madrid do not have plans for any alternatives and are fully focused on landing Carreras. But everything will have to wait until next month.

BPCE reportedly in talks to acquire Novo Banco
French banking group BPCE is reportedly in exclusive negotiations to acquire Novo Banco, a Portuguese lender, from Lone Star Funds. The deal, if materialised, could value Novo Banco approximately €7bn ($8.09bn). This development means that an initial public offering for Novo Banco may no longer be considered, reported Bloomberg. In February this year, Lone Star indicated plans to the Portugal government to sell a 25-30% stake in Novo Banco through an IPO, according to Portugal's Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento. Discussions are ongoing, and no final agreements have been reached, meaning the situation could evolve, reported the news agency. Representatives from Lone Star and Novo Banco have declined to comment, and BPCE's spokesperson did not respond to inquiries outside of regular business hours in Paris. According to Bloomberg News, BPCE has emerged as the primary contender for the acquisition, surpassing Spain's CaixaBank. If the sale proceeds, it would contribute to the total of $27bn in banking acquisitions reported this year, according to the media outlet's data. Lone Star Funds currently holds a 75% stake in Novo Banco, while the Portuguese government retains a 25% interest through various entities, including the Resolution Fund. The potential acquisition by BPCE, which includes subsidiaries such as Banque Populaire and Natixis, could enhance cross-border banking consolidation in Europe, despite recent governmental resistance to such transactions. Novo Banco is said to be Portugal's fourth-largest lender and recorded its first profit in 2021, benefiting from increased net interest income as central banks raised interest rates. The bank has also worked to reduce its non-performing loan ratio, which was one of the highest in Europe following its emergence from the breakup of Banco Espirito Santo SA ten years ago. "BPCE reportedly in talks to acquire Novo Banco" was originally created and published by Retail Banker International, a GlobalData owned brand.
