KUCHING (May 28): The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak will not be silenced despite being labelled 'divisive' by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, said Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong.
Yong, who is also DAP Sarawak organising secretary, rejected the claim and asserted that Sarawak's political stability should not rest on 'silence, submission, or selective memory'.
'True political stability is achieved when every voice is heard, when power is held accountable, and when governance is inclusive – not when the ruling elite are shielded from scrutiny,' she said in a statement today.
'We will continue to speak without fear or favour, to demand transparent governance, expose misuse of public funds, and fight for fair and inclusive development for all Sarawakians,' she said, reaffirming DAP's commitment to transparency and inclusive governance.
Yong's response came following Dr Sim's ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, in which he claimed Sarawak had enjoyed prolonged political stability because DAP had never been part of the state government.
Dr Sim, also the State Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, further described DAP as a party that consistently engages in divisive and polarising politics under the guise of championing the 'rakyat' (people).
Yong said she was taken aback by the remark, calling it a reflection of 'political ignorance and whitewashing', and described it as a gross insult to the principles of parliamentary democracy.
'Let me make this clear. DAP is not in the Sarawak government because we respect the will of the people,' she said.
'In the last state election, we won only two out of 82 seats. We accepted that result with humility and chose to serve where the voters placed us – as the opposition- playing our role in providing checks and balances.
'That is the essence of democracy; not blind obedience, but principled service to the rakyat,' she added.
Yong also challenged Dr Sim to provide a single example where DAP had divided Sarawakians.
'When have we ever played the politics of race or religion? The answer is never,' she said.
She also criticised Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), led by Dr Sim, for aligning themselves with Perikatan Nasional during a time when the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a dominant force within the coalition, held significant influence.
'SUPP has become nothing more than a meek junior partner, politically submissive to PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu).
'They toe the line, nod in silence, and remain conveniently quiet in the name of so-called 'stability', even as core Sarawakian values are under threat,' she said. dap divisive Dr Sim Kui Hian violet yong

DBKK urged to stop acting as federal tax collector

Yong KOTA KINABALU (June 1): Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) should stop playing the role of federal tax collector to hunt down inactive taxpayers, said former chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee. He said these hawkers and micro businesses are not major tax evaders. They are small, informal traders already battling rising costs, subsidy cuts, and declining purchasing power. Yong said the CEO of Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri Malaysia (Inland Revenue Board) had announced that LHDN Sabah collected RM5.7 billion in taxes from Sabah in 2024. LHDN also targets tax revenues of RM6.2 billion for this year 2025. This means an average of RM6 billion in taxes from Sabah per year for 2024 and 2025 alone. 'It is not rocket science that 40% of that RM6 billion tax revenues is RM2.4 billion. This RM6 billion tax revenues excludes other tax revenues collected by the Customs Department and other federal agencies in Sabah. 'Yet Sabah has not received its rightful 40 per cent share of that revenue that Sabah is entitled to under the constitution,' he said in a statement on Sunday. Yong said there is absolutely no reason for the federal government to delay making annual payments of at least RM2 billion to the Sabah government. Instead, Sabah is paid an interim amount of only RM600 million, which is a figure plucked from nowhere. He said enforcing tax compliance in this climate, while RM2 billion in Sabah's share remains unreturned, only worsens economic fragility and damages local economic resilience. 'DBKK must adjust its mindset. It should stop aligning with federal LHDN enforcement while the billions owed to this region remain unpaid. DBKK should not contradicts its role as a local government agency in uplifting livelihoods in Kota Kinabalu city,' said Yong. He called on the federal government to honour the 40 per cent entitlement without further delay. Until then, tax enforcement in this region should be re-evaluated, paused if necessary, and guided by consultation with the Sabah government and Sabah business organisations.

RM600 million ‘plucked from nowhere', Sabah owed billions: Yong

Published on: Sunday, June 01, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 01, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee ( pic ) has criticised the federal government for failing to return Sabah's constitutional 40 per cent revenue entitlement, despite Inland Revenue Board (IRB) collecting RM5.7 billion in 2024 and targeting RM6.2 billion this year from the State. Yong, also SAPP President, said the average of RM6 billion collected annually from Sabah means the state is owed at least RM2.4 billion each year, yet receives only an interim payment of RM600 million, a figure he described as 'plucked from nowhere.' He also questioned why the City Hall (DBKK) is aiding IRB in targeting small-time hawkers for tax enforcement while Sabah's legitimate revenue remains unpaid, calling the move a contradiction of DBKK's role in uplifting local livelihoods. He said these hawkers and micro businesses are not major tax evaders but struggling informal traders facing rising costs and reduced purchasing power, warning that such enforcement damages economic resilience. Yong urged the federal government to immediately honour the 40 per cent entitlement and called for DBKK to cease acting as a federal tax collector until proper revenue-sharing is restored. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? The event was organised by the SUPP Pelawan Youth section. Sarawak Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang, highlighted the significance of the dumplings as a cherished tradition within the Chinese community. 'As a reminder, we had the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, whose dedication to patriotism and justice aligns with the values of the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP),' he told reporters. The Pelawan assemblyman further elaborated on the symbolism behind the dumpling, saying that the string that holds the dumpling together symbolises unity. 'The mixture of all kinds of ingredients in the dumpling symbolises the mixture of our culture and our race. Just like Sarawak's community – a melting pot,' he said. 'That's why Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) under the leadership of our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg – each year, we have been rolling out some welfare programmes, benefits, special assistance to all levels of communities. 'And not only that, every year, we have some pleasant surprises. I mean, new revenue streams spearheaded by our Premier,' he added. Also present was Penghulu Ting Tien Huat.
