Fan favourites qualify for the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final

RTÉ News13-05-2025

Fan favourites Sweden, Ukraine and the Netherlands are among the ten countries that have qualified for the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Dutch act Claude Kiambe, 21, went through with his track C'est La Vie - a blend of English and French that promotes a message of accepting life as it is. Also qualifying were KAJ, with the Swedish song Bara Bada Bastu, a playful tribute to Nordic sauna culture.
The first semi-final of the contest, held in Basel, Switzerland, where the competition began in Lugano in 1956, also saw Estonia's Tommy Cash qualify with Espresso Macchiato, which referenced typical Italian phrases, as well as Poland's Justyna Steczkowska with her dramatic entry Gaja.
Icelandic electronic musician brothers Matthias Davio Matthiasson and Halfdan Helgi Matthiasson, known as VÆB, made it through with RÓA, as did San Marino's Gabry Ponte with the catchy Tutta L'Italia, and Albania's Shkodra Elektronike with their folksy number Zjerm.
Portugal's Napa with the dancey Deslocado and Norway's Kyle Alessandro with Lighter were also revealed as qualifiers.
Ukraine's Ziferblat, with the haunting Bird of Pray, secured the final spot.
Cyprus' Theo Evan with Shh and Slovenia's Klemen with How Much Time Do We Have Left were among those who did not progress.
Also performing on Tuesday were Swiss entrant Zoë Më with Voyage, Italy's glam rocker Lucio Corsi with Volevo Essere Un Duro (I Wanted to Be a Tough Guy), and Spain's Melody Gutierrez with Esa Diva (That Diva) - all of whom are pre-qualified for the Grand Final.
Before the qualifiers were announced, co-hosts Hazel Brugger and singer Sandra Studer performed a tongue-in-cheek song about Swiss contributions to the world, including the Theory of Relativity, folk hero William Tell, and Eurovision itself.
Studer noted that this is the "most sustainable Eurovision ever", with around 80% of the outfits recycled.
While votes were being counted, Canadian singer and former Swiss winner Celine Dion delivered a pre-recorded video saying Switzerland has "always held a special place in my heart" as she spoke in French and English.

She also said she would want "nothing more but to be with you" in Basel as discussions continue with the organisers for her to make a stage comeback on Saturday during the final amid her health issues.
Switzerland had not triumphed until Nemo with The Code at Malmö 2024 after Dion won in Dublin 1988 with Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi, which was performed this evening in St Jakobshalle arena by previous Eurovision stars including Silvester Belt and Iolanda.
Ireland's entry, EMMY, is set to perform her catchy electropop track Laika Party as the third act of the night during the second semi-final at St Jakobshalle on Thursday.

The second Eurovision semi-final takes place on 15 May and will be shown live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player from 8pm.
The Grand Final airs on Saturday, 17 May, live on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player from 8pm.

Murder suspect Ian Bailey to have his remains scattered in Cork later this month

Bailey became the chief suspect in the murder of 39-year-old French woman Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork in 1996 Ian Bailey was the chief suspect in the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier Murder suspect Ian Bailey's ashes will be scattered in west Cork later this month at a ceremony in which his film director pal Jim Sheridan is one of the invitees. But insiders reveal that of the 40 invites so far sent out none have been issued to his former partner Jules Thomas. The discreet service will be held close to where Bailey lived near Schull. It comes nearly a year-and-a-half after the Englishman was cremated in a private ceremony in Cork. No one bar crematorium and funeral director staff in attendance in January last year. Sophie Toscan du Plantier was murdered in Ireland in 1996 Bailey became the chief suspect in the murder of 39-year-old French woman Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork in 1996. He collapsed of a heart attack in Bantry on January 21 last year aged 66. He had twice suffered two prior heart attacks and autopsy was conducted, with the cause of death recorded as natural causes. Dubliner actor Colm Meaney is set to play Bailey in Jim Sheridan's upcoming movie Re-Creation about the unsolved murder. Oscar-nominated Sheridan previously oversaw a documentary series on Sky about the killing, Murder at at The Cottage: The Search for Justice for Sophie. The French woman's badly beaten body was found by neighbours in a laneway beside her holiday home in Schull on December 23, 1996. Nobody has ever been charged in Ireland with her death. Bailey who was once the chief suspect in the murder and was arrested twice for questioning, however, the Director of Public Prosecutions decided there was insufficient evidence to charge him. He was a former journalist who lived two miles away from du Plantier's holiday home in the town. He was one of the first reporters to arrive at the scene following her murder. Bailey was convicted in absentia of the murder by a French court in 2020, which put a 25-year sentence on him. He stringently denied any involvement in du Plantier's murder and, due to not present being in court for the French proceedings, he could not appeal the verdict. However, the High Court in Ireland ruled that he should not be extradited to France to face that jail term. Jim Sheridan Sheridan, who met Bailey several times and plays a juror in the upcoming film, previously said: 'To say Ian Bailey died of natural causes is the Irish phrase for 27 years of torture. 'He died of a bad heart, brought on by excessive drinking and smoking, but there was no doubt he had post-traumatic stress from all of this.' English woman Jules Thomas was in a tempestuous relationship with Bailey for over 30 years, before kicking him out. The Association for the Truth about the Murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier vowed to continue their campaign for justice despite Bailey's death. Ian Bailey was the chief suspect in the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier Today's News in 90 Seconds - 08 June 2025 'Despite this trial and France's repeated requests for his extradition, Ian Bailey remained free, never facing charges from the Irish justice system,' it said. 'Throughout these years, Ian Bailey refused to answer the questions of French investigators, entangling himself in lies and contradictions. Provoking and taunting the police, the judiciary, and the media, Ian Bailey always avoided telling the truth about this murder, of which, beyond any reasonable doubt, he knew every detail. 'Irish judicial authorities never wanted to charge him or extradite him to France, in disregard of European commitments based on the principle of mutual trust between states, which Ireland signed and ratified.' 'With Bailey's death, Sophie's family and our association will never be able to obtain a confession from Ian Bailey. 'We continue our efforts for truth and justice. An investigation is underway in Ireland, and we are confident that the discovery of new elements, the hearing of new witnesses, and the revelation of possible complicity will enable Irish police to close the case, 27 years after the murder.'

Samantha Mumba calls for Late Late Show Eurosong to be axed

Singer Samantha Mumba has stood by her comments surrounding the Eurosong – saying she believes the Late Late Show special should be axed. The Gotta Tell You hitmaker was one of several artists hoping to represent Ireland in this year's Eurovision Song Contest, but ultimately lost out to Norwegian singer Emmy, with her song, Laika Party. Emmy since went on to fly the flag for Ireland in Basel but failed to qualify for the final. But the Eurosong became shrouded in controversy when days after the competition ended, Mumba hit out of the panel of judges – who included Donal Skehan and Arthur Gourounlian – claiming they didn't have enough credentials to be on the judging panel, with the exception of previous Eurovision entry Bambie Thug. Reflecting on the row, Mumba said she stands by her comments. Speaking to RTÉ Radio One's Brendan O'Connor Show, the singer said it was 'a very, very personal thing' for her to enter the competition and she wanted to step out of her comfort zone. 'So even doing that, and doing a song competition, isn't something that I had on my bingo list at 42 at all." She said it would have been 'ego' to believe she should not have been competing in a contest, adding: 'And it's a song competition, and I wouldn't want to represent Ireland with a song that Ireland didn't want either or do something.' She said: 'I think fair is fair, and I think if that's the process, then that's what it was. "And honestly, I was just proud of myself for doing it because it definitely wouldn't have been something that I would've been necessarily even thinking I would have the balls to do it, if I'm being totally honest, like, a few years ago. No, I loved the process of all of it." On whether she was surprised about the reaction her post on the process received, she said that 'everybody's entitled to an opinion'. "And I was a bit surprised - that wasn't even the focus. Like, I think I just... What I wrote was just at the end of the post. The focus of the post was actually just thanking everybody on the team who'd worked so hard on it. "I didn't see what the big deal was." She added that she is not on social media very often so was not aware that the post would generate the reaction it did. "But I mean, I certainly stand by what I said. I don't take it back. "I think, you know, fair is fair, if people can give their opinion on national television, surely I'm allowed to give my opinion on my own Instagram page. I think that's fair." The singer also said she believes the Eurosong should be separated from the Late Late Show into a separate programme. "I love the variety of it. I love kind of the process that it's open to everybody," she said. "I think if I had one immediate one, I would think that it should be its own show, and it definitely should be televised in a music venue that is set up for singers."
