Jay Johnson on how LSU baseball has become a top destination for elite pitchers

Jay Johnson on how LSU baseball has become a top destination for elite pitchers LSU baseball's second College World Series appearance in three years under head coach Jay Johnson is fueled by another phenomenal pitching staff. Under Johnson, LSU has emerged as a premier destination for pitchers across the country -- transfer portal products and high school recruits. "I think we're at the forefront of developing pitching in college baseball," Johnson said. "There's no better place for a pitcher in the entire country to come right now and develop to be a major leaguer than LSU." Several pitchers heard their names called in MLB Drafts since Johnson took the helm in 2022, including 2023 first overall selection Paul Skenes as well as 2024 second-round selections Luke Holman and Gage Jump. All three came to Baton Rouge as transfers. In 2025, the starting tandem of Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson has been one of college baseball's best one-two punches. The duo ranks No. 2 and No. 3 nationally in strikeouts. Eyanson joined the Tigers from UC-San Diego, while Wofford transfer Zac Cowan ranked among the SEC's top relievers. Between home grown talent and portal additions, Johnson crafted a winning formula to pitcher recruitment at LSU. It has his team competing for its second national championship in three years. When recruiting the caliber of pitcher LSU needs, you have to battle the temptation to go pro, along with recruiting the other teams in the SEC. LSU's recent success has given Johnson and the Tigers a strong sales pitch. Johnson said he knew what LSU had on the position player side when arriving at LSU, highlighting Dylan Crews, but the pitching staff required attention. "We had a lot of work to do in constructing a College World Series or National Championship caliber pitching staff, and I feel like we've had that for the last three years," Johnson said. Casan Evans, a top high school pitcher in the 2024 recruiting class, was another key addition to this squad. With Anderson likely heading to the professional ranks, Evans has a chance to be LSU's ace next year. "He's a big-time pitcher and he pitches the best in the big moments. And that's a really good trait to have," Anderson said of Evans. LSU is set to open its 2025 CWS run vs. Arkansas on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.

Florida Basketball in the Top 5 of ESPN's Transfer Portal Rankings

Florida Basketball in the Top 5 of ESPN's Transfer Portal Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Florida Gators basketball head coach Todd Golden is gearing up to defend a title in the 2025-26 season. In order to do this, Golden needed to assemble a talented group of transfers and recruits to reload. Advertisement That is something ESPN believes Golden has achieved on paper. Jeff Borzello has ranked the teams that he believes have done the best work in the transfer portal. He had Florida at No. 5, the second-best work from SEC teams, with Kentucky being at No. 2. The reigning National Champions brought in three transfers for the new season. Xaivian Lee from Princeton, AJ Brown from Ohio, and one from SEC rival Arkansas in Boogie Fland. Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden after winning the national Deutsch-Imagn Images Borzello touched on the addition of Fland, with the signing being a big reason why they are so high in the rankings. "Fland's decision vaulted Florida into these class rankings -- near the top of the Fland's decision vaulted Florida into these class rankings -- and near the top of the Way-Too-Early top 25. He's a former five-star prospect and was one of the best freshmen in the country before suffering an injury in January.." Borzello wrote, "He's a former five-star prospect and was one of the best freshmen in the country before suffering an injury in January." Advertisement The Florida Gators did not only win the National Championship but also the SEC Tournament. They also added two four-star players from the 2025 recruiting class, CJ Ingram and Alex Lloyd. Both are Florida natives and top 50 players in the 247Sports rankings. Borzello ranked the Gators at No. 2 in his Way-Too-Early top 25 behind the Purdue Boilermakers. They have lost several players who helped them achieve greatness last season, including Walter Clayton Jr., Will Richard, Alijah Martin, and Denzel Aberdeen. However, the players they brought in alongside Alex Condon, who withdrew his name from the NBA Draft to return to Gainesville, give them a great chance to go back-to-back next season. Alabama to Host Five-Star Shooting Guard on Tuesday

Alabama to Host Five-Star Shooting Guard on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Alabama Crimson Tide under head coach Nate Oats have been a top ranked team in college basketball over recent years. Advertisement His ability to coach, recruit, and develop the young men on his rosters translates to deep runs in the NCAA Tournament, and the goal of cutting down the nets to close the season. Falling short in the Elite Eight this past season to the Duke Blue Devils, the Tide are looking to bounce back in 2025, and hope to make it to the final weekend. On Tuesday, Oats and the staff are hosting five-star shooting guard Caleb Holt for an unofficial visit. Holt is the No. 5 overall recruit in the 2026 recruiting class. Alabama head coach Nate Oats celebrates a play against Connecticut during the Final Four semifinal game at State Farm Stadium.© Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK Holt would be an incredible add to the Tide, and would put them ahead in the SEC's recruiting rankings, as there has yet to be a five-star commit in the 2026 window. Advertisement They certainly have their work cut out for him to acquire Holt. While being in his home state in Alabama, they will likely be fighting other top SEC schools in their pursuit of him, as the Auburn Tigers have expressed interest in the young guard. Among the two Alabama schools, Ole Miss has emerged as a potential landing spot for Holt, and is the only school to have a visit completed with him. Now he will be able to add Alabama as a team to have completed a visit with him, and while it is an unofficial one, will be able to develop a relationship with the staff as they continue to determine how good a fit would be between the two. With plenty of time until his commitment will take place, Alabama can look ahead to the 2025 season, as they have the No. 4 overall recruiting class in the country, including the best in the SEC.
