What makes that even more impressive is that he's donated more than $60 billion of his wealth to the Gates Foundation, established in 2000. Much of those donations have come straight from Gates' personal portfolio, which includes a significant stake in Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), the company he founded, as well as several important diversifying investments. Outside of Microsoft, Gates appears to be an investor focused on value, taking lessons from his longtime friend and former Gates Foundation donor and trustee, Warren Buffett. As a result, the Gates Foundation portfolio reflects the combination of Gates and Buffett's investment styles, including maintaining a highly concentrated portfolio of top investments. As such, nearly two-thirds of the foundation's trust fund is held in just three outstanding stocks. Gates first donated Microsoft stock to the foundation upon its founding in 2000, and he's steadily added more shares over time. And while the foundation has often sold some of its shares to fund grants, it's managed to build a substantial stake in the tech company. As of the end of the first quarter, the trust held about 28.5 million shares. Those shares are worth more than $14 billion as of late June. Microsoft stock has soared to an all-time high in recent weeks on the back of its strength in artificial intelligence (AI). After a $10 billion investment in OpenAI in early 2023, Microsoft's Azure became the leading cloud computing platform for developers looking to take advantage of leading-edge AI models. It's exhibited market-leading growth since then, including 33% growth in its most recent quarter. What's more, Microsoft management says the business remains supply constrained as demand remains high, so it's likely to maintain that growth rate for some time. Microsoft has also benefited from integrating AI into its enterprise software business. Microsoft 365 commercial revenue has grown at a double-digit pace, bolstered by selling more seats at higher average prices. Microsoft has developed specialized AI assistants, or Copilots, for applications, including GitHub and Dynamics 365, which help businesses get more out of the software. It also offers a Copilot Studio, which allows businesses to use their own data to create specialized AI assistants. As a result, Microsoft has seen strong revenue growth and even better profit growth as its margins expand. And with Azure leading the company going forward, that should only continue, going forward. Investors will have to pay a premium price for the stock right now, with its forward P/E of about 37. But with a massive cash cow of its enterprise software business supporting the rapid expansion and growth of its cloud computing business, it looks like it's worth the premium price. As mentioned, Warren Buffett has been a longtime donor to the Gates Foundation. In fact, his total investments since 2006 come to more than $43 billion. And when Buffett donates to non-profits, he donates Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B). Buffett maintains control of the company by converting super-voting Class A shares to Class B shares before donating. Buffett requires the Gates Foundation to pay grants equal to the amount he donates every year plus an additional 5% of the trust's assets. Nonetheless, Gates has managed to hold onto a significant number of Berkshire Hathaway shares. As of the end of the first quarter, the trust held 17.1 million shares. Those are worth about $8.3 billion. Berkshire is a holding company that includes several owned and operated businesses. As a group, those businesses have been executing at a high level. That said, the biggest segment, insurance, struggled due to natural disasters like the California wildfires. Overall, that led to some disappointing first-quarter results. The bulk of Berkshire's value stems from its publicly traded equity portfolio and cash. The total value of its liquid investments sits around $631.8 billion. Over half of that is in Treasury bills or cash as Buffett looks for something he can buy at a good value. That's an increasingly difficult task as Berkshire's size leaves only a handful of companies as viable options for Berkshire to take a stake in. Shares of Berkshire have fallen since Buffett announced his retirement from the CEO position effective Jan. 1, 2026. It now trades at a price-to-book ratio of 1.6. That price is still historically expensive for Berkshire, though, and Buffett has neglected to buy back shares at that valuation over the last several quarters. That said, Berkshire may deserve to trade for a higher multiple, given that it's currently unleveraged (not utilizing the insurance float for investments) and sitting on a ton of cash. Most of the other stocks held by the Gates Foundation trust reflect the value-investing ideas that made Warren Buffett so successful. Waste Management (NYSE: WM) may be the most emblematic of that. Waste Management has been a staple of the portfolio since 2002. The long-term buy-and-hold position has steadily increased in value over the years with limited share sales. The trust held 32.2 million shares at the end of the first quarter. Those are worth about $7.3 billion as of this writing. What makes Waste Management appealing is its tremendous competitive moat. It holds an unmatched portfolio of landfills, which is impossible to match due to the high bar required to receive a permit for new landfills. As such, many smaller waste haulers pay Waste Management to use its landfills. Waste Management also benefits from scale, which allows it to create denser pickup routes and get more out of its operations. As a result, the company sports strong profit margins. With its excess cash, the company has been able to grow through acquisition. The most recent of which is Stericycle, which is now called WM Healthcare Solutions. At its most recent investor day, management predicted $50 million in cross-selling opportunities with Stericycle in addition to its $250 million in cost synergies. Management also sees revenue growth accelerating to about 9% per year with expanding earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margins through 2027. That will support strong free cash flow growth, which management can use for additional tuck-in acquisitions, its growing dividend, or share repurchases. With an enterprise value of about 15 times the expected EBITDA over the next 12 months, the shares look fairly priced and could be a good opportunity for a dividend growth investor looking for companies with strong free cash flow growth potential. Pelosi's prime profits prove it's time to ban Congress' stock trading
Gee, look at that: Nancy and Paul Pelosi had yet another 'lucky' year on the stock market in 2024. What will it take for Congress to crack down on its members' insider trading? New required disclosures show the former House speaker and her hubby raked in $7.8 million to $42.5 million last year, bumping their estimated net worth to as much $413 million. (The law doesn't make them share exact numbers.) And a good chunk of that eye-popping wealth comes from their impressive stock portfolio, which is so consistently lucrative that entire social-media accounts are dedicated to tracking the Pelosis' buys and sells. Nancy maintains that she owns no stocks (it's all hubby Paul) and (says a mouthpiece) she 'has no prior knowledge or subsequent involvement in any transactions.' Which, even if she said that herself, under oath, leaves plenty of room for Paul to trade on the basis of inside information — whether things she learns on the job, or info fed to either of them for favors past, present or future from the ex-speaker. Certainly, Paul has made some uncannily sharp moves in the markets. In fact, his portfolio outperformed every major hedge fund last year. In July, he sold 5,000 shares of Microsoft, months before the Federal Trade Commission announced an antitrust investigation into the company. And he dumped 2,000 Visa shares months before the Justice Department sued the company for allegedly monopolizing the debit-card market. If he were an average Joe, the Securities and Exchange Commission would be picking through his records with a fine-tooth comb — because that kind of foresight reeks of insider knowledge. Fine; maybe Paul is a modern-day Nostradamus, somehow working his market magic without the least bit of impropriety. But it sure is fishy for any top official's family member to pull in millions this way, year after year after year. We doubt hard proof will ever come to light; the Pelosis are far too smart to leave a clear trail. But they're only the most notable examples of this game: Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle regularly make good money off the market; the portfolios of dozens of Democrats and Republicans in Congress beat the S&P 500 in 2024, according to watchdog Unusual Whales. Maybe they're just really good at making trades — but the simple fact is that neither the House nor Senate does anything serious to prevent such abuse of privileged information. Even if all (or the majority) don't use that knowledge, allowing them to make trades offers too many opportunities for corruption. And when they keep scoring big on market bets for decades, a la the Pelosis, it reeks. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have both signaled they would support a ban on congressional stock trading — the kind that Nancy blocked repeatedly as speaker. Getting that passed before next year's midterms should be a priority for Republicans — clear proof that they want to clean up Congress. If a career in the House no longer makes it easy to get rich, the next potential Pelosi might just go into an entirely different line of work.

After months of anxiety over tariffs, inflation, Middle East tensions and so much more, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite have scaled yet another wall of worry — mounting a strong comeback and returning to record territory for the first time in months. Do I take a part-time job to spend more time with my kids — or get a job for six figures? What drove stock market's record-breaking week? Don't overlook growing rate-cut expectations. Investors now wonder whether the new records signal the start of a longer-lasting rally in the U.S. stock market, or if it's merely a short period of boom before the next big shakeout. For some strategists, the answer hides in one of the market's most longstanding questions: How broad is the rally? Technology stocks have been at the forefront of the market's record-setting rally. The so-called Magnificent Seven cohort of megacap tech names — which includes Apple Inc. AAPL, Microsoft Corp. MSFT, Nvidia Corp. NVDA, Inc. AMZN, Google parent Alphabet Inc. GOOGL GOOG, Meta Platforms Inc. META and Tesla Inc. TSLA — have collectively added $4.7 trillion in market capitalization since the stock market's April 8 closing low, bringing their total market value to nearly $18 trillion as of Friday afternoon, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Also leading the gains on the S&P 500 SPX were shares of Coinbase Global Inc. COIN, which have surged over 140% since April 8, making it the top performer among the large-cap index's 500 components. Following closely behind are shares of Seagate Technology Holdings STX and Microchip Technology Inc. MCHP, which also logged notable gains of over 100% in the same period, according to Dow Jones Market Data (see table below). Beyond individual names, tech-related sectors have also stood out as the best performers on the S&P 500 since April 8. The S&P 500's information-technology sector XX:SP500.45 has popped over 41% since early April, while the communication-services sector XX:SP500.50 is up nearly 28%, compared with the 24% gain for the broader index over the same period, according to FactSet data. The strength in technology stocks has prompted many to question if the rally is being driven by a wide swath of stocks or just a powerful few. But the answer isn't straightforward — and it depends on which measure of market breadth investors are looking at. The New York Stock Exchange's daily advance-decline (A/D) line — one of the most widely followed stock-market breadth indicators measuring the difference between the number of advancing and declining stocks — rose to an all-time high on Thursday, when the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite COMP briefly tested their record highs for the first time in at least four months. Tom Essaye, founder and president of Sevens Report Research, said that the new highs in the NYSE A/D line showed that the recent advance toward record territory is 'broad-based,' and it should be considered 'both historically healthy and likely sustainable.' Strong returns in cyclical sectors since the April lows also suggest the record-setting rally isn't entirely confined to megacap technology stocks. The S&P 500's industrials sector XX:SP500.20 has risen nearly 27% since April 8, while the financials XX:SP500.40 and materials XX:SP500.15 sectors are also up nearly 19% in the same period, according to FactSet data. See: This outlook shows why investors should maintain exposure to the 'Magnificent Seven' However, although the NYSE A/D line shows positive breadth in the stock rally, the reading on the percentage of the S&P 500's stocks trading above their 200-day moving averages offers reason for concern. Only about 50% of the S&P 500's stocks on Thursday traded above their 200-day moving averages (DMA) — well below the early-May highs, according to data compiled by Sevens Report Research. Typically, a healthy market sees between 65% to 80% of the S&P 500's stocks trading above their 200-DMA. The 200-day moving average is usually considered a key indicator for determining the overall long-term trends of a security. 'The divergence between the bullish NYSE A/D line reading and recently heavy action in the percentage of S&P 500 stocks trading above their 200-DMA is a source of concern that the rally off the April lows has been due to a combination of real strength in some corners of the market, but simply counter-trend, bear-market rallies in others,' Essaye said in a Friday client note. 'For the bulls, the best-case scenario is for the percentage of the S&P 500's stocks trading above their 200-DMAs to rise beyond the May highs of 55%,' he added. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index XX:SP500EW — which gives equal value to all of the stocks that are included in the S&P 500, regardless of the size of the company — has risen 18.7% since April 8. That compares with the 24% advance for the market-cap-weighted S&P 500 index in the same period, according to FactSet data. See: What drove stock market's record-breaking week? Don't overlook growing rate-cut expectations. 'We do need to see continuation in the rally across some other sectors, besides just tech or communications,' Ben Fulton, chief executive officer of WEBs Investments Inc., told MarketWatch in a phone interview on Friday. But he added that Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts would still be 'necessary for any of the lagging stock sectors that are dependent on debts and financing' to keep pace with technology stocks. To be sure, investors have been growing more confident in the outlook for the U.S. economy ever since President Donald Trump softened his stance on sweeping tariffs and struck trade deals with some of the U.S.'s major trading partners, including China and the U.K. Meanwhile, the likelihood of at least three quarter-point rate cuts from the Fed by year-end, signs that recent tariffs have not significantly impacted inflation, and easing tensions between Israel and Iran also lifted market sentiment. U.S. stocks finished higher on Friday, with the three major stock indexes booking strong weekly gains. The S&P 500 rose 3.4% for the week, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA was up 3.8% and the Nasdaq Composite surged 4.3%, according to FactSet data.
