Cara Cara Opens Pop-up on Upper East Side, Showcasing Spring Collection
Cara Cara, the advanced contemporary apparel brand, has opened a pop-up on the Upper East Side at 1265 Madison Avenue.
The shop, which measures 630 square feet, is the company's first long-term pop-up, having operated a one-week pop-up in Nantucket, Mass., in August of 2023.

Cara Cara was founded in 2019 by Julia Brown, Katie Hobbs and Sasha Martin. Each woman had their own successful career previously — Brown in fashion design, Hobbs in digital media and e-commerce, and Martin in finance and marketing.
The brand specializes in feminine dresses, tops, pants and skirts, often in vivid colors and original prints. The company started out as a small collection of printed cotton poplin dresses and has evolved into a complete collection that includes ready-to-wear, knits, tailoring, evening, and outerwear.
The spring collection starts at $245 and goes to $995.
The pop-up, which opened Friday, highlights Cara Cara's complete spring and upcoming summer ready-to-wear collection, with the latter set to arrive later this month and into May. There will also be several pieces exclusive to the store and the New York City market. In addition, the store will carry a small little girls capsule with the spring collection for mommy-and-me dressing.
According to the cofounders, Cara Cara's business is split 60/40 between wholesale and direct-to-consumer. The women's brand is carried by such retailers as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's, Shopbop, Revolve, Net-a-porter and Moda Operandi as well as a network of top specialty stores nationwide.
To bring the decor to life, Brown hired her longtime friend and interior decorator Darren Henault, who is known for drawing inspiration from interiors and vintage textiles. The Cara Cara team worked closely with Henault to reflect the spirit of the collection from antique rugs, colorful Murano glass, ceramic urns and his own bespoke Georgian teak chaise and lounge. A vintage hand-painted screen anchors the dressing room, which was designed with selfies in mind. The design is a blueprint for future permanent spaces, according to the founders. The antiques, objects and custom furniture from Henault's upstate store, Tent, are all for sale at Cara Cara.
The pop-up, which is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m to 5 p.m., will be open through mid-June.
Cara Cara plans to collaborate with a selection of brands across swimwear, hats, jewelry and accessories. 'The initiative is designed to introduce labels that currently lack a presence in the Carnegie Hill neighborhood, bringing a curated mix of fresh finds to the boutique,' said cofounder Hobbs, who is chief marketing officer.
In addition, the owners plan to host a series of charity shopping events supporting various causes such as the Carnegie Hill Neighbors Association, a nod to cofounder Martin's deep roots in the community, where she was raised and now resides with her family.

Air India plane crashes with 242 on board; 1 survivor reported
An Air India passenger plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad on Thursday, shortly after taking off for London's Gatwick airport, the airline and officials said. After initially saying there were no known survivors from the crash of Air India flight AI171, officials confirmed one man who had been on the plane survived and was being treated at a hospital. Officials feared numerous casualties on the ground, as the aircraft had crashed into buildings. Air India said the plane, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, departed at 1:38 p.m. local time carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian. "Investigations will take time, but anything we can do now, we are doing," Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said in a video statement on Thursday. "We understand that people are eager for information. Please know that we will continue to share accurate and timely information as soon as we can, but anything we report must be accurate and not speculative. We owe that to everyone involved. For now, our teams are working around the clock to support passengers, crew and their families — as well as investigators — however we can." Wilson said the airline was sending a "special team of caregivers" to Ahmedabad to provide support. Gatwick Airport, which is just south of London, said the plane had been due to land there at 6:25 p.m. local time (1:25 p.m. Eastern). A spokesperson for Boeing told CBS News the company was "in contact with Air India regarding Flight 171 and stand ready to support them. Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders and all affected." The incident was the first of its kind for the 787-8 Dreamliner, according to Boeing's April 2025 statistical summary of incidents involving its aircraft. "Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the passengers and crew on board Air India Flight 171, as well as everyone affected in Ahmedabad," Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg said in a statement. "I have spoken with Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran to offer our full support, and a Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau." The National Transportation Safety Board said it would "be leading a team of U.S. investigators traveling to India to assist the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau with its investigation into the crash." The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said India's government would lead the investigation, and U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said later the FAA is deploying teams to assist in the investigation alongside the NTSB. Investigations into the crash were in the early stages and a cause has not yet been determined. CBS News meteorologists said weather did not appear to be a factor, as there were only light winds at the time and visibility was good. Former NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt told CBS News that in video of the crash, the plane appeared to have its landing gear down and flaps up at a time in the flight when those should have been reversed. Investigators were searching for the plane's two black boxes, the flight data recorder and flight voice recorder, and said Friday that one of them has been recovered. "I think these are going to unlock the mystery of this accident, so it's critical to get these black boxes and get them read out," Sumwalt said. One survivor hospitalized Air India said there was a "sole survivor" of the crash who was being treated at a hospital. "We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital," the airline said in a statement Thursday on social media. Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik was quoted by the ANI news agency as saying "the police found one survivor in seat 11A." He said the person was "in the hospital and is under treatment." Indian media outlets spoke with a man in a local hospital who said he was U.K. citizen Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the person who had been listed in that seat on flight AI171, according to the flight manifest shared by Indian authorities. According to Air India, the survivor is a British national of Indian origin. Dr. Dhaval Gameti at Ahmedabad's Civil Hospital told The Associated Press that he had examined Ramesh, saying that while the survivor "was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body... he seems to be out of danger." Responding to reports that the survivor is British, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Thursday, "Obviously we're establishing the facts and the investigation is ongoing." "We're in constant contact with the Indian authorities and we've dispatched our own team that's been acknowledged to work with them," Starmer said. "I think it is important for all friends and family to contact the Foreign Office so we can roll this out as quickly as possible. But it is an ongoing investigation and it'll take some time, but our hearts and our thoughts are absolutely with the friends and families of all those affected who are going to be absolutely devastated by this awful news." Video shows plane crashing into neighborhood Video shared online by Indian network NDTV shows the passenger jet flying low over buildings before disappearing behind them. There is then a large explosion. No fire or explosion can be seen on the aircraft before it dips behind the buildings. Part of the plane hit the dining area of B.J. Medical College and killed at least five medical students, Divyansh Singh, vice president of the Federation of All India Medical Association, told the AP. He said nearly 50 people who had been in the building were injured. "Some of the injured are critical. We are in close contact with our peers in the hospital who are on a lookout for more people feared buried in the debris," he said. India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among those killed in the plane crash. "He will be remembered as a grassroots leader who devoted his life for the development & welfare of his state," Singh said in a statement on social media. The head of India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, told the AP that flight AI171 crashed five minutes after taking off. Live flight tracking website Flight Radar said a final signal was received from Flight AI171 just seconds after it took off. The flight path on Flight Radar showed the aircraft traveling southwest from the airport a short distance before the path stopped, and the site said initial data showed the aircraft reached a maximum barometric altitude of 625 feet before it started to descend. "At this point, it's very, very, very early, we don't know a whole lot," Aviation consultant John M. Cox told the AP. "But the 787 has very extensive flight data monitoring — the parameters on the flight data recorder are in the thousands — so once we get that recorder, they'll be able to know pretty quickly what happened." The Indian Army said it had deployed at least 130 personnel, including doctors and paramedics, to assist civil authorities in combing through the debris and helping to treat the injured, the AP reported. Exclusive-India moves to conserve its rare earths, seeks halt to Japan exports, sources say
By Neha Arora and Aditi Shah NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India has asked state-run miner IREL to suspend a 13-year-old agreement on rare earth exports to Japan and to safeguard supplies for domestic needs, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, aiming to reduce India's dependence on China. IREL also wants to develop India's capacity for rare earth processing, which is dominated globally by China and has become a weapon in escalating trade wars. China has curbed its rare earth materials exports since April, pressuring automakers and high-tech manufacturers worldwide. In a recent meeting with auto and other industry executives, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal asked IREL to stop its exports of rare earths, mainly neodymium, a key material used in magnets for electric vehicle motors, one of the sources said. The Commerce Ministry, IREL and the Department of Atomic Energy, which oversees IREL, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The sources declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter. Under a 2012 government agreement, IREL supplies rare earths to Toyotsu Rare Earths India, a unit of Japanese trading house Toyota Tsusho, which processes them for export to Japan where they are used to make magnets. In 2024, Toyotsu shipped more than 1,000 metric tons of rare earth materials to Japan, commercially available customs data showed. That is one-third of the 2,900 tons mined by IREL, although Japan relies mainly on China for its rare earths supply. Toyota Tsusho and Toyotsu did not immediately respond to requests for comment. IREL has been exporting rare earths due to a lack of domestic processing capacity, but following the recent disruptions to supplies of Chinese material it wants to keep its rare earths at home and expand domestic mining and processing, a second source said, adding that IREL is awaiting statutory clearances at four mines. However, India may not immediately be able to stop supplies to Japan because they fall under a bilateral government agreement, the person said. IREL wants this to be "amicably decided and negotiated because Japan is a friendly nation", the person added. Japan's Trade Ministry said in a statement to Reuters: "We would like to refrain from answering questions about bilateral exchanges in general, not just about this matter." EXPANSION PLANS China's recent export controls on rare earth materials have rocked the global auto industry, which has warned of supply chain disruptions and production halts. China also weaponised its supplies in 2010, when it briefly stopped shipments to Japan. That prompted the Japanese to turn to India for rare earths. India has the world's fifth-largest rare earth reserves, at 6.9 million metric tons, but there is no domestic magnet production. India relies on imported magnets, mainly from China. In the fiscal year to March 2025, India imported 53,748 metric tons of rare earth magnets, government data showed. These are used in automobiles, wind turbines, medical devices and other manufactured goods. Rare earth mining is restricted to IREL, which supplies India's Atomic Energy Department with materials for nuclear power projects and defence-related applications. India lacks wide-scale technology and infrastructure to mine rare earths, and the development of any commercially viable domestic supply chain is years away, analysts said. IREL has a rare earths extraction plant in the eastern Indian state of Odisha and a refining unit in Kerala, in southern India. The miner, founded in 1950, plans to produce 450 metric tons of extracted neodymium in the fiscal year to March 2026 with a plan to double that by 2030, the second person said. It is also looking for a corporate partner for the production of rare earth magnets for the auto and pharmaceutical industries, the person said. India is firming up plans for incentives to companies to set up rare earth processing and magnet production facilities to meet local demand, people familiar with the matter told Reuters earlier this month.
