Jayson Tatum's Devastating Injury Could Spell Doom for Phoenix Suns' Offseason Plans

Jayson Tatum's Devastating Injury Could Spell Doom for Phoenix Suns' Offseason Plans

Yahoo17-05-2025

The Boston Celtics, after entering the NBA season as favorites to repeat as title winners, suffered a brutal injury to their best player. In Game 4 against the New York Knicks, superstar Jayson Tatum went down with an injury, later revealed to be a torn Achilles.
With the possibility of him missing an entire season very real, now is the expected time for the Celtics to shed some salary and trade away one of their more expensive players, ducking the luxury tax and second apron.

If Boston puts players like Jrue Holiday, Jaylen Brown, or Derrick White on the trade block, it could ruin the Phoenix Suns' offseason plans.

Ever since the Suns' season went off the rails, trading Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets has been the most logical course of action. Houston has young players and draft picks that the Suns would covet, and Durant would fit in well with Houston's current roster.
However, Holiday, White, and Brown would also fit in well in Houston, and Ime Udoka had success with White and Brown during his lone season with the Celtics.
The Rockets have also been linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo, although now that the San Antonio Spurs can build a trade package built around the second overall pick, they are the frontrunners to land the Greek Freak.

Durant is an elite player, but the Rockets seem to value hard-nosed, two-way players with a track record of buying into team culture. Durant, simply, has not been able to do that during his career, and White, Brown, and Holiday are all better fits, with White and Holiday likely being cheaper for Houston to acquire.

Kevin Durant's Camp is 'Eyeing' One Team Amid Suns' Trade Rumors

Kevin Durant's Camp is 'Eyeing' One Team Amid Suns' Trade Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Phoenix Suns are coming off what could only be described as an incredible disappointment of a season. Instead of improving upon the prior season in which they were swept out of the NBA Playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, they went in the other direction, finishing 36-46. Advertisement As a result, they missed out on even securing a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament, finishing as the No. 11 seed in the Western Conference. They made changes quickly, firing head coach Mike Budenholzer. Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant dunks against Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George during a game at Wells Fargo Center. Bill Streicher-Imagn Images Kevin Durant's camp is eyeing one team amid trade rumors The changes didn't stop there, as owner Mat Ishbia installed Brian Gregory as the general manager and moved James Jones into a senior advisory position. With the general manager now in place, the Suns will likely explore trading Kevin Durant after opting not to trade him at the trade deadline in February. According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix, close to Durant's camp is looking at one team in particular as his desired destination: the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are in win-now mode, as evidenced by their trade for De'Aaron Fox at the deadline. Durant showed this season that he has plenty left in the tank. He averaged 26.6 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Advertisement Placing a lengthy player like Durant next to Victor Wembanyama will cause havoc for opposing defenses and offenses. The 15-time All-Star will be 37 years old at the start of next season, so it's likely he'll want his next and possibly final destination to be one where he can add to his legacy with one more championship. If the Spurs can land Durant, they'll instantly become contenders in the Western Conference. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

NBA insider shares how teams view Celtics ahead of pivotal offseason

NBA insider shares how teams view Celtics ahead of pivotal offseason originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston The Boston Celtics might be the most fascinating franchise ahead of what could be a very exciting NBA offseason. Advertisement The Celtics are one of three teams in the second apron, and based on what their roster could cost next season, it would make sense to shed some salary this summer and create future flexibility. With superstar forward Jayson Tatum sidelined as he starts a lengthy recovery from Achilles surgery, the Celtics could choose one of several different paths. Do they make a couple minor changes and try to remain competitive in a weak Eastern Conference next season? Or do they take a bit of a step back, make moves with an eye toward the future and look to be a serious contender two seasons from now? And what does the rest of the league think of the Celtics' dilemma? Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix answered that question Wednesday on NBC Sports Boston's The Off C'Season YouTube show. Advertisement 'Whenever I talk to teams about Boston, they're almost viewed as a target where they've got a little something for everybody,' Mannix said. 'If you want a wing player, you can try to pull Sam Hauser out of there. If you need a defensive-minded guard, Jrue Holiday is available. I just think teams are waiting to see how deep the cuts with Boston are going to go. We all know they're going to slice away some of this payroll.' Which players could be available if the Celtics are looking to shed salary? 'Hauser, to me, is the most likely candidate to go, just because you have (Baylor) Scheierman there to effectively fill his role,' Mannix said. 'I think they'd love to find a home for Jrue Holiday, just because of the contract and where they are as a team. Porzingis, who knows? I don't think they want to take on contracts that go on longer than Porzingis' deal, but he's certainly available. 'Teams I've talked to just aren't fully sure what Boston wants to do. Do they want to just nibble around the fringes and get under the second apron, or do they really want to reboot this thing, take that full gap year, and go into 2026-27 with Jayson Tatum and some other stuff as the centerpiece of the team.' Advertisement Hauser is about to enter the first season of a four-year extension worth $45 million. He is a career 42 percent 3-point shooter and not a huge liability defensively. Hauser's quality outside shooting and modest salary could make him attractive to a bunch of teams. Holiday has two more years, plus a 2027-28 player option, left on his contract with an average annual salary of $33.6 million. The veteran guard is still a decent scorer, he's a very good defensive player and has plenty of championship experience. Porzingis is entering the final year of his contract with a $30.7 million salary cap hit. The veteran center is a good 3-point shooter and a strong interior defender, but he's not very durable. Porzingis has played in 99 of a possible 164 regular season games since joining the Celtics. The Celtics ran it back with their championship roster in 2024-25, and just like the previous five defending champions, they didn't make it past the second round of the playoffs. Now the hard part has arrived. How will Brad Stevens and his front office staff tweak the roster? It'll be exciting to watch it all unfold. Kevin Durant Trade Rumors Expected to Intensify in Coming Weeks

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The NBA offseason is slowly approaching. Although the NBA Finals are set to start on Thursday between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers, the offseason is every much at the forefront of people's minds. More Kevin Durant news: Kevin Durant's Future in Phoenix Has Reportedly Been Decided While that is going on, many are wondering about the future of Phoenix Suns superstar forward Kevin Durant. All signs point to Durant likely having a new home for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Only time will tell, but it appears that trade talks surrounding Druant will intensify in the coming weeks. ESPN's Shams Charania reported the news on Wednesday. Kevin Durant #35 of the Phoenix Suns looks on during the first quarter of the game against the Portland Trail Blazers at Moda Center on February 01, 2025 in Portland, Oregon. "The Suns will work with All-Star forward Kevin Durant and his business partner, Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman, on his next landing spot. He is expected to have a robust market of approximately four to six seriously interested teams this offseason." Shams on KD: "Conversations will now begin to pick up on a potential trade of Kevin Durant out of Phoenix over the next 2 to 3 weeks. Conversations will begin to heat up. 4 to 6 teams seriously interested in Durant potentially ahead of the NBA Draft" — Oh No He Didn't (@ohnohedidnt24) June 4, 2025 Durant has spent the past two-plus seasons in Phoenix, and to say it's been a letdown would be putting it lightly. He was dealt to the Suns in a blockbuster move before the 2023 trade deadline, coming over from Brooklyn in a deal that was supposed to shift the balance of power in the West. That year, Phoenix snagged the fourth seed but was bounced in the second round by the eventual champs, the Denver Nuggets. The following season didn't go much better—Phoenix landed the sixth seed only to get swept by the upstart Timberwolves in the opening round. And this past year? It was a disaster. The Suns fell completely out of postseason contention, finishing 11th in the West and missing the play-in altogether. Phoenix seemed disinterested in the second half of the season, and their record reflected that. Durant now has a chance to start elsewhere once again as he is set to enter his age-37 season. It's been quite the roller coaster for Durant since leaving the Golden State Warriors in the summer of 2019. He has been with two squads in the past six seasons and has yet to reach the conference finals during that span. In all likelihood, Durant will join his fifth team of his career, the only question is, where will he go?
