4 New Creative Directions For AI

We all know that AI is changing enterprise in dramatic ways right now. But there are so many vectors of this progress that it's hard to isolate some of the fundamental ideas about how this is going to work.
I wanted to highlight a survey of ideas on new breakthrough research and applying neural network technologies.
These come from a recent panel at an Imagination in Action event where innovators talked about pushing the envelope on what we can do with this technology as a whole. These insights, I think, are valuable as we look at the capabilities of what we have right now, and how companies can and will respond.
To a large extent, past research in AI has been focused on working with text. Text was the first sort of data format that became the currency of LLMs. I would say that happened for a number of reasons, including that text words are easy to parse and separate into tokens. Also, text was the classical format of computing: it's easier to build systems to work with text or ASCII than to work through audio or video.
In any case we're now exploring boundaries beyond text, and looking at how other data formats respond to AI analysis.
One of these is audio.
'We certainly have text banks, but we haven't even scratched the surface on sound and decoding our voices,' said Joanna Pena-Bickley of Vibes AI, in explaining some of what her company is doing with wearables. 'Bringing these things together is really about breaking open an abundant imagination for creators. And if we can use our voices to be able to do that, I think that we actually stand a chance to actually (create) completely new experiences, sensual experiences.'
It's great for auditory learners, and we may be able to do various kinds of diagnosis and problem-solving that we didn't before. Pena-Bickley explained how this could help with cognitive decline, or figuring out people's personal biological frequencies and how they 'vibe' together.
In the world of gaming, too, scientists can apply different kinds of AI research to the players themselves.
In other words, traditional gaming was focused on creating an entertainment experience, but as people play, they generate data that can be useful in building solutions beyond the gaming world.
'We are trying to create dynamic systems, systems that respond to players,' said Konstantina Yaneva, founder of Harvard Innovation Labs. 'So we map … cognitive science, game design, and then (use) AI-driven analytics to help map and then improve decision-making patterns in players. But this is also a very creative endeavor of how to collaborate with consumers of entertainment, and how to meet them where they are, and then to help them self-realize in some way.'
Another area of pioneering is extended reality: in addition to AR and VR, XR is a technology that seems like it's due to have its day in enterprise.
It's always been time consuming, difficult and hard to keep up in terms of your teaching or if you're doing research,' explained renowned multi-technology artist Rus Gant, who has some ties to MIT. 'So the idea is to use AI as a way to create content in near real time.'
In addition, Gant talked about various aspects of applying AI, and in thinking out of the box, which could be interesting for anyone trying to meld AI with the humanities.
Here's another part of how companies are using the agentic AI approach that's only developed in the last few years.
Noting that agentic is now a big 'buzzword,' Armen Mkrtchyan of Flagship Pioneering talked about the practice of applying this concept to science.
It basically has to do with understanding the patterns and strategies of nature, and applying them to the digital world.
This starts with the idea of analyzing the human brain and comparing it to neural nets. But it can go far beyond that – nature has its own patterns, its own cohesion and its own structures.
Mkrtchyan talked about how scientists can use that information to simulate things like proteins. He also mentioned that the company has a stealth project that will be revealed in time, that's based on this kind of engineering.
Generally, he says it's possible to create a system that's sort of like a generative adversarial system (this is my reference, not his) where some AI agents come up with things, and others apply pressure to a decision-making process.
'About two years ago, we asked ourselves how we could try to mimic what nature does … nature is very good at creating new ideas, new things, and the way it does (this), it creates variability, creates optionality, and then applies selective pressure. That's how nature operates. And we thought at the time that we potentially AI agents, we could try to mimic the process … think of biology asking, can you create a specific peptide that binds with something else? Can we create an RNA molecule? Can it create a tRNA molecule?'
Expanding on this, Mkrtchyan noted some of the possible outcomes, with an emphasis on a certain kind of collaboration.
if we can say that intelligence consists of nature's intelligence, humans, intelligence, machines, intelligence, then can we leverage the power of all three of them to come up with new ideas, new concepts, and to drive them forward?
I also wanted to include this idea from Gant about audiences. Our audiences are changing, and we should be cognizant of that. We have Generation X, the sort of 'bridge' generation to AI, and then we have AI-native generations who have never known a world without these technologies.
'There is a very distinct difference when you come down the line from the Boomers to Gen X to Millennials to Gen Z, Gen Alpha, these are different groups,' Gant said. 'They think differently. They absorb information differently. They're stimulated in different ways, as to what excites them and gets them motivated. And there's no one size fits all. And right now, I think there's a big danger, and in the AI world, particularly when you productize AI, to go for the largest number of customers, and sort of leave the margins alone, because there's no money there. I think… the students that I have (who are) most responsive are basically the Gen X and soon to be Gen Alpha, that they basically look at you and say, 'Why didn't you do this sooner? Why did you do it in a way that doesn't make any sense to me?' I think in a sort of multiplex way. I multitask, I take input in various ways … we don't know what they're going to do with this. Whether it's Millennials or Gen Z or Gen Alpha, they're going to do really interesting things, and that's why I'm interested in how we can work with the AI in its non-traditional role, the solutionization world, where it's thinking outside the box.'
All of this is interesting information coming out of the April event, and reflects a survey of what companies can do now that they were not able to do in the past. Check out the video.

3 big iOS 19 changes that I hope Apple reveals at WWDC 2025

We're less than two days away from Apple's big WWDC 2025 keynote, where the company will reveal new versions of each of its software platforms. One of the biggest changes this year is the expected shift from iOS 19 to iOS 26, with new versions of macOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS also set to follow suit. We're also expecting to see the evolution of Apple Health, including a new AI doctor and Health subscription. iOS 26, if it is to be named that, is expected to introduce one of the biggest evolutions in design for Apple software since the first iPhone was launched. Inspired by visionOS and the Apple Vision Pro, it's expected to be a monumental redesign, but I hope that Apple also takes the time to make a few improvements. Recommended Videos I've used the iPhone for over a decade, which I carry every day along with one of the best Android phones. While iOS is an excellent platform, there are a few key areas where it could improve. Here are the five improvements I'm hoping to see on Monday. 1. True support for third parties It's somewhat antithetical for Apple to embrace third parties, evidenced by its ongoing lawsuit with Fortnite developer Epic Games, but this might be the best time for the company to do exactly this. It may also prevent regulatory challenges, like the Epic Games lawsuit, which resulted in support for third-party app stores on the iPhone, but only in Europe. The success of the iPhone can be largely attributed to its early adoption by third-party developers. These developers built the apps and experiences that enabled the iPhone to have the impact it has had. While this has been great for apps, Apple only enabled third-party solutions to replace certain system functions, and these features don't work anywhere near as well. Third-party keyboards have been supported for over a decade, yet it's still a bit-part installation, which results in the OS often freezing and resorting to the default keyboard. Apple's new Passwords app in iOS 18 also made third-party password managers less stable. This could also help address a significant issue for Apple. The company's troubles with Apple Intelligence and the new Siri could be somewhat solved by enabling third-party assistants to be set as the default, at least in the interim. This would also benefit its partnership with OpenAI and ChatGPT, or allow an assistant like Google Gemini to be set as the default. 2. A rebuilt OS that just works again For Apple to truly allow third-party support, it needs to rebuild iOS. Over the past 19 years, Apple's iPhone software has largely stayed the same under the hood. The result is that while many features have been added over the years, they have directly contributed to the OS's load and instability. Consider iOS 18 and the launch of the theming engine, as well as the more flexible approach to the homescreen layout, and the transformation of widgets. All are great additions to the customizability of iOS 18, but none launched with the same stability and aplomb that made Apple as successful as it has been. Apple products are infamously meant to 'just work', and it's time to return to that era, starting with a rebuild of iOS. The visionOS platform demonstrates that Apple can still design beautiful, first-generation software experiences, and the iPhone needs a next-generation experience. 3. Advanced features from Android There are many features available on Android that aren't available on the iPhone. While iOS 18 brought the iPhone closer to the customizability of an Android phone, there are still a few things that are needed for the iPhone to continue competing with the best phones. Consider the Galaxy S25 Ultra: it features multiple telephoto lenses, the S-Pen stylus, and true multitasking capabilities. Or the Oppo Find N5 and Galaxy Z Fold 7, which feature two screens and advanced stylus input. Then there are phones like the Oppo Find X8 Ultra, Galaxy S25 Ultra, and Vivo X200 Ultra, which all feature multiple telephoto lenses and advanced camera systems that are more capable than the iPhone, at least for still photography. Then there's Apple's approach to the homescreen. Last year, Apple introduced significant improvements to the homescreen, but there are still many ways for Apple to take this further. I'd love to see resizable icons, a choice of grid layouts, and more advanced management of icon positioning and grid. And yes, I hope they fix the current homescreen introduced in iOS 18, so we can put apps wherever we want, and they'll stay in place. The next-generation iPhone experience needs to do more than fix the bugs; it should set the iPhone up to compete with the very best phones. Apple is rumored to launch an iPhone Fold eventually, and iOS 19 should lay the groundwork for this to compete with the best folding phones. I can't wait to see what Apple launches on Monday during the WWDC 2025 livestream. I use an Apple product in each category, and I am genuinely excited to see what the company does next. I suspect we'll see a mix of bug fixes, design changes, and some new features to highlight, but less from Apple Intelligence than we did last year. We'll all find out soon!

Bill Atkinson, Macintosh Pioneer and Inventor of Hypercard, Dies at 74

It was November 1983, and reporting for Rolling Stone, I had gained access to the team building the Macintosh computer, scheduled to launch early the next year. Everyone kept telling me, 'Wait till you meet Bill and Andy,' referring to Atkinson and Andy Hertzfeld, two key writers of the Mac's software. Here's what I wrote about the encounter in my book, Insanely Great: I met Bill Atkinson first. A tall fellow with unruly hair, a Pancho Villa moustache, and blazing blue eyes, he had the unnerving intensity of Bruce Dern in one of his turns as an unhinged Vietnam vet. Like everyone else in the room, he wore jeans and a T-shirt. 'Do you want to see a bug?' he asked me. He pulled me into his cubicle and pointed to his Macintosh. Filling the screen was an incredibly detailed drawing of an insect. It was beautiful, something you might see on an expensive workstation in a research lab, but not on a personal computer. Atkinson laughed at his joke, then got very serious, talking in an intense near-whisper that gave his words a reverential weight. 'The barrier between words and pictures is broken,' he said. 'Until now the world of art has been a sacred club. Like fine china. Now it's for daily use.' Atkinson was right. His contributions to the Macintosh were critical to that breakthrough he'd whispered to me at the Apple office known as Bandley 3 that day. A few years later, he would singlehandedly make another giant contribution with a program called Hypercard, which presaged the World Wide Web. Through it all, he retained his energy and joie de vivre, and became an inspiration for all who would change the world through code. On June 5, 2025, he died after a long illness. He was 74. Atkinson hadn't planned on becoming a pioneer in personal computing. As a graduate student, he studied computer science and neurobiology at the University of Washington. But when he encountered an Apple II in 1977, he fell in love, and went to work for the company that built it a year later. He was employee number 51. In 1979, he was among the small group that Steve Jobs led to the Xerox PARC research lab and was blown away by the graphic computer interface he saw there. It became his job to translate that futuristic technology to the consumer, working on Apple's Lisa project. In the process, he invented many of the conventions that still persist on today's computers, like menu bars. Atkinson also created QuickDraw, a groundbreaking technology to efficiently draw objects on a screen. One of those objects was the 'Round-Rect'—a box with rounded corners that would become part of everyone's computing experience. Atkinson had resisted the idea until Jobs made him walk around the block and see all the traffic signs and other objects with rounded corners. When Jobs took over the other Apple project inspired by PARC technology, the Macintosh, he poached Atkinson, whose work had already influenced that product. Hertzfeld, who was in charge of the Mac interface, once explained to me the Lisa features he'd appropriated for the Mac: 'Anything Bill Atkinson did, I took, and nothing else.' he said. Atkinson, who had become disenchanted at the Lisa's high price tag, embraced the idea of a more affordable version, and began writing MacPaint, the program that would empower users to create art on the Mac's bit-mapped screen. After the Mac launched, the team began to unravel. Atkinson had the title of Apple Fellow, which gave him the freedom to pursue passion projects. He began work on something he called Magic Slate—a device with a high-resolution screen that weighed under a pound and could be controlled by a stylus and swipes on a touch screen. Basically, he was designing the iPad 25 years early. But the technology wasn't ready to create something so miniaturized and powerful at an affordable price (Atkinson hoped it would be so inexpensive you could afford to lose six in a year and not be bothered.) 'I wanted Magic Slate so bad I could taste it,' he once told me. After the failure of Magic Slate, Atkinson fell into a months-long depression, too disheartened to turn on his computer. One night, he took LSD and wandered out of his home in the Los Gatos hills. Staring into the vast collections of pixels that made up the night sky, he became reenergized, and decided to adopt some of the Magic Slate ideas into software that could run on the Mac. He designed a program where information—text, video, audio—would be stored on virtual cards. These would link to each other. It was a vision that harkened back to a 1940s idea by scientist Vannevar Bush which had been sharpened by a technologist named Ted Nelson, who called the linking technique 'hypertext.' But it was Atkinson who made the software work for a popular computer. When he showed the program, called HyperCard, to Apple CEO John Sculley, the executive was blown away, and asked Atkinson what he wanted for it. 'I want it to ship,' Atkinson said. Sculley agreed to put it on every computer. HyperCard would become a forerunner of the World Wide Web, proof of the viability of the hyperlinking concept. Atkinson left Apple in 1990. Soon after, he joined several of his Mac team colleagues, along with future technology stars like Tony Fadell (who would later help invent the iPod) and Megan Smith (who became CTO of the United States under Obama) to form General Magic, a brilliant effort to build a handheld device that basically did everything the iPhone would do 15 years later. Unfortunately, the company built its device just before the internet took off. Once more, it was too early. In his later years, Atkinson became passionate about nature photography and produced several stunning collections of prints. I treasure a volume of photos he captured of stones that were cut open and polished to a gleam. The pictures looked like swirling, organic fractal abstractions, taunting us to solve their mysteries. I last saw him at the 40-year Mac team reunion in January 2024. He was as ebullient as he'd been on the day I met him and he participated in a joyful panel with fellow Mac team members at the Computer History Museum, in his trademark Hawaiian shirt. Atkinson attended Burning Man last September. On October 1, 2024 as he explained in a Facebook post, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and asked friends and well-wishers to pray for him. 'I have already led an amazing and wonderful life,' he wrote. Earlier this year, he shared a new version of his website that offered free downloads of his photography. He traveled as late as this year, including a two-week sailing trip to Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands. He died in bed, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, two stepchildren, and a dog named Poppy. Every link in this obituary owes a debt to Bill.
