Sure they'd like to beat the Montreal Alouettes for the second week in a row — all proud professional athletes want to win every game they play — but the coaching staff is more concerned with determining the roster for a game just six days later, when the Redblacks kick off the Canadian Football League's 2025 schedule in Regina against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

That means fans at TD Place for Ottawa's first home game since last season's Week 21, 37-31 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will not see most of the team's front-line players.

Among those watching the action in civilian clothes will be quarterback Dru Brown, Most Outstanding Player award nominee Justin Hardy, the flashy Kalil Pimpleton, Bralon Addison, Devonte Dedmon, new offensive weapons Geno Lewis and William Stanback, most offensive- and defensive-line starters, Jovan Santos-Knox and Adarius 'The Party Starter' Pickett.

What will be on display are fierce battles for the few available starting jobs, backup spots, practice-roster vacancies and even trying to be noticed by other CFL teams looking to fill holes.

'We bring in 85 guys, plus the non-counters, and on Day 1, I tell them, whether they make our roster or in the preseason, they need to perform so somebody else may see them and give them an opportunity,' head coach Bob Dyce said at TD Place on Thursday, the Redblacks' first day back at home base after a training camp held at Queen's University in Kingston.

'I'd love to see all these guys play in the league, whether it's with us or somebody else. That's our goal as coaches: prepare them, make these guys better players, so that they continue to to have opportunities.'

Talking to the team at Dyce's request earlier in the day was defensive back Justin Howell, a former Carleton Raven who the Redblacks selected with their seventh-round pick (55th overall) in the 2018 draft and has been a mainstay since.

Dyce, who was the Redblacks special-teams coach then, remembers vividly how Howell performed that year in the pre-season finale against the Toronto Argonauts.

'It sticks in my mind,' Dyce said. 'Justin went out, played on special teams and made the point that I had to go to the head coach (who was Rick Campbell, now Redblacks special-teams coach) and say, 'We cannot release this guy.'

Roughriders hold off Redblacks 31-26 in CFL season opener
The Saskatchewan Roughriders won the CFL's first game of the 2025 season, but the 31-26 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Thursday was costly. The Roughriders lost four starters to injury, including three in the first 17 minutes. Receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker appeared to injure his left ankle; tailback A.J. Ouellette suffered a suspected head injury; and defensive back Rolan Milligan left the game with an apparent neck injury. Offensive lineman Payton Collins was injured in the third quarter of his CFL debut when an Ottawa player rolled up the back of his right leg. None of the four injured Riders returned to the game. The Roughriders dealt with injury issues last season and focused on a next-man-up mentality. Thursday's game took that to another level, and one that head coach Corey Mace expects from his players. "The next-man-up mentality, that certainly that has been our experience in the past, but the expectation is you've got to get the job done," Mace said. "You're on this team; you're a professional athlete. We're not going to change too much stuff up just because somebody else is in there. If you're on the active roster, things keep rolling. I'm extremely proud of the guys who had to step up and double duty, because a lot of those guys also are on special teams, having to suck wind in Week 1." Saskatchewan took a 31-17 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Redblacks, behind the impressive play of quarterback Dru Brown, cut the deficit to 31-26 with four minutes left in the game. Brown, who completed 34 of 41 passes for 413 yards with two touchdowns, had the Redblacks on their own 41-yard line with 1:11 left to play. After an incompletion, Brown was sacked for a 16-yard loss by Saskatchewan's Malik Carney. Facing a third-and-26 situation, Brown connected with William Stanback on a 14-yard completion that turned the ball over on downs. "It sucks to lose," Brown lamented. "I wish it was different but at the end of the day, it's one game. It's a game we felt we could've won. Great teams still thrive in this type of environment and there were some encouraging things going on. "We're on our way. We're not there yet but we'll get there." When Ouellette went down, Thomas Bertrand-Hudon stepped into the void and rushed for 57 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries. He also gained 17 yards and one touchdown on two receptions. Betrand-Hudon benefited from the blocking of Samuel Emilus on his rushing touchdown, which gave the Riders a 31-14 lead. "He blocked his tail off the entire game, and he helped me out score a couple of times, so I've got to give props to him. He actually swung me into [the end zone]," Bertrand-Hudon said. It was the second two-touchdown game of Betrand-Hudon's CFL career. He scored twice in a 33-26 loss to the B.C. Lions on Sept. 29, 2023, during his rookie season. Despite some big offensive numbers by Ottawa — Brown's 413 passing yards and Justin Hardy and Bralon Addison with 133 and 112 receiving yards respectively — Mace felt Saskatchewan's defence answered the bell when it mattered. "This is what I do understand about this defence, and it has been this way since even I played — I don't care how many yards, just tell me if it's a W or an L," the coach stated. "As far as the defence being able to stand up when we needed it, to make a big play, yeah, they made them when we needed them." Roughriders starting quarterback Trevor Harris also wasn't concerned about how the victory looked. "It's early in the season and we've got to understand that these are full 60-minute football games," Harris said. "It's tough to win in this league. "Our defence stepped up, our specials did a great job. We're going to be all right. We're going to be a different team when it comes to Week 15 and playoff time and Labour Day. "We're going to be improved from where we are right now. But make no mistake, these wins matter at the end of the year, so a win is a win." Ottawa scored a touchdown on their first possession of the season. The Redblacks drove 87 yards on 10 plays with backup quarterback Dustin Crum reaching the end zone on a one-yard sneak. Brown was seven-for-seven passing for 84 yards on the drive. Harris completed 19 of 26 pass attempts for 277 yards and two touchdown throws in the game. His backup Tommy Stevens scored on a one-yard run 13 seconds into the second quarter and Emilus hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Harris seven minutes later to increase Saskatchewan's lead to 14-7. A 17-yard field goal by Brett Lauther with 17 seconds left in the quarter gave the Riders a 17-7 halftime lead. Emilus had an impressive first half with six receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown. He finished the game with eight catches for 133 yards. Geno Lewis, on an eight-yard reception, and Stanback, on a two-yard run, also scored second-half touchdowns for the Redblacks.

Calgary Stampeders seek turnaround in 2025 with quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.
CALGARY – The 2025 CFL season will be a proving ground for the Calgary Stampeders. The Stampeders want to show themselves and their fans that the team has what it takes to get back into the playoffs after falling short of the post-season for the first time in 19 years. There will be unprovens in starting jobs for the Stampeders from the defensive backfield to the return game to punting to offensive short-yardage situations. Players have the chance to make a name for themselves and raise their CFL stock. 'We've got maybe a different type of athlete,' said head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson, who enters his third season in the dual roles. 'We do have more size. We've got to find playmakers. It does feel like the guys believe that we have the pieces in place. It's about going out winning games and if we can put it together on that field on that new turf, we'll be a happy group.' Calgary opens at home Saturday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, who won two Grey Cups and two CFL Most Outstanding Player awards as a Stampeder. Vernon Adams Jr. makes his Stampeder debut Saturday. Calgary acquired the 32-year-old quarterback in a trade with the B.C. Lions, a month after the Stampeders closed out their dismal 2024 campaign. 'He understands that he is on the pedestal and all eyes are on him,' Stampeders receiver Reggie Begelton said. 'But at the same time, we win or lose as a team. In that locker room, we have his back no matter what.' Adams led the CFL in passing yards in 2023 (4,769) and ranked second in touchdowns (31). He was in the MOP conversation in 2024 with B.C. before he was sidelined with injury in August. Jake Maier, who replaced Mitchell and is now with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, didn't have much success in Calgary with 11 wins over two seasons. But Calgary's defence was also the worst at stopping the rush and 537 points against was the second-worst in 2024. 'First thing for the offence, we've got to not turn the ball over as much,' Dickenson said. 'We had too many of those interceptions and costly ones, and for a multitude of reasons though, not necessarily just quarterback play. 'Defensively, we've got to stop the run. Then special teams, to me, just effort and execution. The execution maybe needs to be better.' The latter department falls to Dickenson's older brother Craig, who was Saskatchewan's head coach for four years. He takes over for Mark Kilam, who, after 15 years as Calgary's special teams co-ordinator, is Edmonton's head coach. Bob Slowik was promoted from linebackers coach to defensive co-ordinator after Brent Monson was hired by Hamilton. Pat DelMonaco starts his sixth season as offensive co-ordinator. But seven new position coaches on Calgary's staff represent a seismic shift for a football club known for coaching continuity and retaining position coaches for multiple years. But finishing last in the CFL prompted the shake-up of a franchise accustomed to playing high-stakes games in November. 'We've had to put it behind us. It's easier because there's really not a lot of guys here from that team,' Dickenson said. 'We don't even really talk about it. We understand history is history and it's certainly something that'll always be there for the guys that were (here) in 2024, but it's certainly a big-time different team. 'We're just a young team and also an inexperienced team, so every day, you have to make it count. What I mean by that is every practice, every meeting really has to count.' Begelton, who signed a contract extension that would make him a Stampeder for a ninth season in 2026, feels the Stampeders are ready for a turnaround in 2025. 'Energy, vibes, you can't deny something when you feel it,' Begelton said. 'There's belief here. 'We know what it takes. 10 Thoughts: Roughriders find a way to beat Redblacks in season opener
Article content 6. We knew the Roughriders were going to have a strong defensive line this year given the talent they have with starters Micah Johnson, Mike Rose, Malik Carney and Shane Ray. And they showed that in the first half with some quarterback pressures before Carney got home for the first sack of the night. Habakkuk Baldonado then sacked Brown in the second half before Carney and linebacker Jameer Thurman added massive sacks late in the game. Oh, and the Roughriders allowed just three rushing yards on six attempts in the first half and just 30 total rushing yards in the game. This group is going to be stout all season. Article content 7. Should we be concerned about Saskatchewan's defence giving up 413 passing yards? Roughriders head coach Corey Mace, who does double duty as the defensive coordinator, is fine with giving up yards in exchange for timely takeaways. However, the Roughriders didn't get any takeaways on Thursday except for a late turnover on downs, which didn't please the head coach. However, after seeing what this group did last year, the turnovers will come. Article content Article content 8. Ottawa will be a good team this year and that's going to be due to the play of quarterback Dru Brown and the talented targets he has with the likes of Justin Hardy and Bralon Addison, who both had 100-yard games. Don't forget about 'superstar' Eugene Lewis, who caught a touchdown pass for the ninth straight game dating back to last season when he was with the Edmonton Elks. Lewis has tied Sean Millington for the second-longest streak in CFL history and he's now one away from tying the record of 10 games with a touchdown pass set by Terry Evanshen in 1967-68. Article content 9. A punter's job is more than just punting the football. In fact, Joe Couch didn't even punt the football in the first half but he was busy as Saskatchewan's field goal and convert holder. Couch had some tense moments tough on his first snap of the game as he bobbled the hold on a 53-yard attempt before pitching it back to kicker Brett Lauther, who made a great play to punt it as far as he did. Couch settled in just fine after that. However, Saskatchewan signed another punter earlier this week, so the situation is worth monitoring heading into Week 2. Article content Article content 10. Not to bring up a bad memory but remember last year when Roughriders kicker Brett Lauther missed four field goals in a game against the Montreal Alouettes? Since then, Lauther has missed just one field goal — going 29 for 30 — including 23 straight. Lauther is also just six points shy of 1,000 for his career. Also deserving of a shout-out is long snapper Jorgen Hus, who has been along the way for all those points as he played his 150th career game on Thursday night. Article content
