Desa Lestari Programme Helped Generate RM9.9 Mln Through Tourism Sector In Kinabatangan
KOTA KINABALU, June 24 (Bernama) -- Kampung Batu Puteh in Kinabatangan has successfully generated RM9.9 million through its tourism sector since 2014, a result of the Sustainable Village (Desa Lestari) Program, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Ahmad Zahid who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development stated that this is a highly commendable impact, with RM12.75 million invested by the government in Sabah through the program, creating 750 job opportunities and benefiting over 5,000 residents.
He said that these investments are part of the government's ongoing efforts to develop rural areas, especially in Sabah, which still require significant improvements.
"However, I acknowledge that, particularly in Sabah, much remains incomplete and far from perfect. A lot needs to be continued and improved. As the Minister leading the ministry that manages villages and regions, I want Sabah to continue to be cared for and to progress," he said.
He made these remarks while officiating the MADANI 2025 Rural Leadership Empowerment Convention here today in the presence of Kinabatangan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
Ahmad Zahid added that the government has also never neglected the state's human capital sector, with the opening of MRSM Ranau last year, which can accommodate 450 rural students, in addition to continued support in entrepreneurship.
According to him, the government has also appointed 2,302 members of the MADANI Village Community Committee (JKDM) in Sabah, with an allocation of RM11 million for Phase 1 of 2025 specifically for allowances and operational activities to serve the people of the state.
"I want JKDM to play its role as a catalyst for change, a facilitator of assistance. If there's a collapsed house, JKDM reports it. If there's a single mother who missed out on assistance—JKDM helps her apply. If young people are unemployed, JKDM finds training or job opportunities," he said.
Ahmad Zahid emphasised that this responsibility is not seasonal work but an all-time trust, thus he does not want JKDM members who only know how to attend events but disappear when in the village.

Umno leaves issue of alleged corrupt assemblymen in MACC's hands
KOTA KINABALU: Umno trusts the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in its investigations into alleged corruption involving Sabah assemblymen over the issuance of mineral exploration licenses in the state. Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said MACC was taking action based on strong information and credible witnesses, while the assemblymen have the right to present evidence in court to clear their names. "We place our trust in enforcement agencies, especially the MACC, not only to conduct investigations but to gather reliable evidence and witnesses. "If these two elements exist, then charges can be filed, and we trust the MACC to take the necessary action. "If an individual has witnesses and evidence to refute the prosecution's case, then they should clear their name in court," he told reporters after opening the Sabah Women Empowerment Programme here today. Zahid was responding to questions regarding Umno's stance on MACC's move to detain two Sabah assemblymen, who were later released on bail, one last Wednesday and another yesterday. Also detained was a businessman Datuk who was linked to videos exposing the corruption scandal. He too was later released on bail. All are expected to be charged by the end of the month, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had said. It is understood that one of the assemblymen is a state assistant minister while the other serves as the chairman of a Sabah government-linked company (GLC). Yesterday, Tanjung Batu assemblyman and Kalabakan member of parliament Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy was reportedly among those called by the MACC to provide a statement in connection with the case. He is an Umno member who had his membership suspended after defying Sabah Umno's decision to withdraw from cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in January 2023. Zahid confirmed that Andi was still suspended.

By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, June 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has embarked on a promotional effort in Jakarta aimed at attracting more Indonesian students to further their studies at institutions of higher learning in Malaysia – and in the process, forging stronger people-to-people relations in both countries. The MyEduTour: Discovery Malaysia 2025 programme, organised by Education Malaysia Indonesia (EMI) — which is the official representative of the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia — along with Tourism Malaysia Jakarta and the Malaysian Embassy, was held at the embassy ground. bootstrap slideshow The Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Syed Mohamed Hasrin Tengku Hussin, said the initiative was part of the country's soft diplomacy effort featuring five public institutions of higher education, five private institutions of higher education, and a travel agency offering travel packages based around education. 'It is hoped that this programme may contribute to closer exchanges between Malaysians and Indonesians and forge stronger societal ties,' he said, adding that some 11,000 Indonesian students are currently enrolled in study programmes in Malaysia. The programme combines education and tourism for Indonesians and is in line with Malaysia's effort to become a regional hub for higher education. The embassy's Minister Counsellor (Education), Hasnul Faizal Hushin Amri, said the platform enables universities in Malaysia to offer academic programmes through interaction sessions and educational visit packages. 'The seminar provided detailed information on the programmes on offer, and this helped educators and representatives of universities to make the best choices for their students,' he said. MyEduTour is an ongoing effort to strengthen cooperation in education and tourism based on long-standing cultural and historical relations between Malaysia and Indonesia, he added.
