Keane backing White Birch for Tattersalls Gold Cup defence

Colin Keane will be gunning for a second Curragh Group One success of the weekend in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, when his old ally White Birch defends the trophy they claimed so impressively together 12 months ago.
On that occasion, John Joseph Murphy's popular grey ran out an emphatic victor over Auguste Rodin and another Aidan O'Brien-trained Classic winner in Los Angeles is rated his biggest rival this time.
White Birch was having his first outing since that triumph when edged out by last year's Irish Derby hero here in the Mooresbridge Stakes recently and their quick rematch promises to be just as thrilling.
Keane, who enjoyed an easy success in the Irish 2,000 Guineas on Field Of Gold, told Tattersalls: 'White Birch had a very good first run back having been off the track for nearly a year and you'd like to think he would have improved from the run by all accounts.
'He has come out of the race very happy, and everyone is looking forward to having him out again.
'He loves the Curragh and although it's one of the strongest renewals of the race, he's coming there in good nick and any rain that falls will help him.
'I'm looking forward to getting back on him.'
Leading the British hopes is Andrew Balding's Kalpana, winner of the Group One Fillies & Mares Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot on her final start last term and the current ante-post favourite for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
She was an intended runner in the Middleton Stakes at York for her return to action, but an unsatisfactory scope put paid to that plan and she has been rerouted to the Curragh instead having shaken off that ailment.
'She's all good, York was obviously Plan A and this is Plan B,' said Barry Mahon, European racing manager to owner and breeder Juddmonte.
'It's probably as deep a Tattersalls Gold Cup as I can remember, it's a very, very strong renewal with multiple top-class horses in there.
'We're hopeful of a good run, it's her first run back this year and it's over 10 furlongs, which is probably short enough for her.
'I think we'll learn a bit more about her and it'll set her up nicely for a nice campaign as a four-year-old.'
Owen Burrows' Anmaat is another British-trained challenger and he too makes his seasonal debut having signed off last term with a Group One success in the Champion Stakes on the same Ascot card.
Angus Gold, racing manager to owners Shadwell, said: 'It will be great to see him in action again, they've done a great job with him at home.
'He's an elder statesman now and he did very well for himself over the winter and they've done very well to get that off him.
'To be fair to the horse, he's such a star, he loves his job and he still seems as enthusiastic as ever.
'He's bound to need the run, but equally he's as well as he can be at home. He's as fit as he can be without a run.
'We've had a bit of rain in Ireland, good ground would be perfect for him and hopefully he'll go there with a very good chance.
'It looks a red-hot race and I think that's a consequence of the ground being so fast everywhere else.'
Clive Cox runs Ghostwriter and Karl Burke has entered Prix Ganay third Royal Rhyme to complete the British contingent.

Oaks and Epsom tips and best bets as Aidan O'Brien filly napped for Classic glory

Garry Owen's top tips for day one of Derby meeting at Epsom Giselle (4:00) can put her best foot forward for Aidan O'Brien in Friday's Investec Oaks at Epsom. The daughter of Frankel is tailor-made to give the Ballydoyle ace his 11th winner of this Classic. She showed huge potential when a gallant second to Bedtime Story on debut at Leopardstown. ‌ The filly quickly boosted her reputation when comfortably opening her account at the Curragh. She ended 2024 with a staying-on third behind Whirl in a one-mile Group 3 contest back there. ‌ Despite that form, the imposing bay looked likely to really excel over middle distances this year. She confirmed that impression with a blistering defeat of Harpsichord in the Lingfield Oaks Trial. The three-year-old looks destined for the very top so she can follow-up in the big race itself. O'Brien can enjoy yet more Group 1 glory with Jan Brueghel (2:40) in the Coronation Cup. The four-year-old absolutely bolted-up from Ozark Daze on his belated debut at the Curragh. He continued to make up for lost time by chinning Trustyourinstinct in a Group 3 back there. The colt showed his St Leger credentials by edging Bellum Justum in the Gordon at Goodwood. He showed class and guts once again to outbattle Illinois in the Last Classic itself at Doncaster. Given time to recover, he returned with a cracking second to Galen over 1m 2f at the Curragh. The star will be primed so he can land add this historic prize to his CV over a more suitable trip. ‌ Diego Ventura (1:30) holds all the aces for Hamad Al Jehani in the competitive Surrey Stakes. The colt oozed class when hacking-up from Majestic Wave for Gavin Cromwell on debut at Naas. Bought by Team Wathan, he edged-out Spirit Of Farhh on debut for his new connections at Ascot. The bay continued to justify his price tag when second to The Waco Kid in a Newmarket Group 3. He ran another stormer when filling the same spot behind La Bellota dropped in trip at York. The son of Mehmas was an eye-catching third to Cosmic Year in the Charles II returned to HQ. ‌ He put that run to good use with a convincing defeat of Epson Blue Cen in a Longchamp Group 3. There is plenty more to come from this pacey type who can get the better of some exciting rivals. Havana Hurricane (2:05) can blow his rivals away in the British EBF Woodcote Stakes. Eve Johnson Houghton's colt was a well-fancied 11-2 chance before his debut at Goodwood. He handled the undulating track extremely well when hosing-up from the exciting Logi Bear. The two-year-old surged clear that day so he can stay unbeaten up in trip at this similar track. ‌ Defiance (3:15) won't back down for Roger Varian in the tricky Betfred Nifty 50 Handicap. The four-year-old looked promising when outbattling Caviar Heights on debut at Sandown. He then didn't run too badly when sixth to Ghostwriter in the Royal Lodge at Newmarket. The bay handled this track well when edged-out by Bellum Justum in the Blue Riband Trial. He couldn't cope with the step-up in trip and class when unplaced in the Lingfield version. The four-year-old had his limitations exposed again when flopping in the Edward VII at Ascot. The son of Camelot retains plenty of ability so he can bounce back in these calmer waters. ‌ Two Tempting (4:35) can get the job done once again in the TrustATrader Handicap. Jonathan Portman's horse recorded a career best when just denying Beshtani last year. He was almost as good when fending-off Classic in another red-hot contest at Sandown. However, the five-year-old then struggled off inflated marks on his next couple of starts. ‌ He took advantage of some mercy from the assessor when edging Divine Libra at Chester. The gelding quickly lost his way again after a lacklustre effort behind Volterra at Ascot. He bounced back when cosily dismissing Partisan Hero returned to the Roodee last time. This big prize has been the aim ever since so he can strike again for his shrewd handler. Miss Information (5:10) looks reliable for Andrew Balding in the Debenhams Handicap. The filly returned to her useful juvenile form when routing Phoenix Of Dreams at Chester. ‌ She then showed a real liking for this track when hammering Guiteau in decent company. The four-year-old then held her form reasonably well for the rest of the campaign. She needed the run when a fine fifth behind Ten Pounds on her comeback at Newmarket. The bay looked much fitter when outbattling Physique in a similar contest returned to HQ. The daughter of Blue Point remains fairly-treated so she can follow-up under Oisin Murphy. Classy Calandagan chasing Coronation Cup crown

'We would really love a first Group One with him and that's what we would like to do this year, he deserves to win a Group One and we're hoping it will be on Friday,' said Nemone Routh, racing manager for owners the Aga Khan Studs. Calandagan (left) bumped into City Of Troy in the Juddmonte International Stakes (Mike Egerton/PA) 'I suppose the only real doubt is handling the track and he's probably never run on anything like Epsom before. 'He's a very balanced horse and we imagine he is going to be OK but you never know until they get there and run. We are confident he is going to run well, he always runs well.' Calandagan was again runner-up at the highest level when returning to action in Dubai in April, with this race immediately earmarked for the gelding's next outing, a ploy the owners almost pulled off with Meydan scorer Dolniya in 2015 when going down narrowly to Pether's Moon at Epsom. 'We were happy with his run in the Sheema Classic, he got a little bit far back but that's because he was drawn on the inside and he's not a horse with a huge amount of early speed,' continued Routh. Race 8⃣#DWC down to the last two races!🏇 DANON DECILE from 🇯🇵 Japan bagged the title of the fastest in the Dubai Sheema Classic race! 日本のダノンデサイルがドバイシーマクラシックで最速の座を勝ち取りました!#DubaiRacing#DWC25 #DubaiWorldCup #ドバイ競馬… — Dubai Racing Channel (@DubaiRacingTV) April 5, 2025 'He finished the race well and took the race well, he's very straightforward and we've been happy with his preparation. 'We won the Sheema Classic with Dolniya and then came to this race and it gives them enough time to get over the trip to Dubai as you're winding them up quite early in the season to run in a Group One, which is quite a big ask for a horse coming out of winter. 'The gap gives them enough time to get over that and then run well and Francis had always earmarked this race for after Dubai. This has been the plan for a while and we hope he's in great form.' Giavellotto ended a winter of globetrotting by finishing fifth in the same Meydan event as Calandagan and now makes his UK return fresh from his trainer Marco Botti enjoying Italian Derby glory in his homeland. Giavellotto is Marco Botti's stable star (David Davies for The Jockey Club/PA) Botti said: 'He's in good form and with Epsom you never know whether they'll handle the track or not, but he ran at Goodwood and handled the undulations there and it's not a big field, so fingers crossed he'll handle it. 'He's proven now that over a mile and a half he's quite effective. It's not an easy race, but he deserves to be there.' Aidan O'Brien will saddle a pair of St Leger heroes Jan Brueghel in Continuous as he looks for back-to-back Coronation Cup victories following Luxembourg's success 12 months ago. O'Brien explained how Jan Brueghel was a late substitution into the race following a shuffling of the Ballydoyle pack, but expects him to improve for his reappearance second in the Alleged Stakes. 'Everyone was standing in line behind Kyprios and when Kyprios was retired we had to find a Gold Cup horse and it was between him and Illinois,' said O'Brien. Jan Brueghel carries the hopes of Aidan O'Brien (Mike Egerton/PA) 'We just felt we could give Illinois the first go at it as he won at Chester and his preparation was going to fit into the Gold Cup, when that happened Jan Brueghel could take Illinois' position in the Coronation.' Of Jan Brueghel, he added: 'He was second to one of Joseph's (O'Brien) the first day over a mile and a quarter and he will definitely be much happier going a mile and a half. 'I'm never surprised when they get beat. Obviously he was a Leger winning starting back over a mile and a quarter, so he was always going to lack race sharpness and fitness at that time of the year. 'Joseph's horse beat him nicely on the day, but we thought it did our horse good and he learnt a lot and he came out of the race well.' Ralph Beckett's Irish Oaks heroine You Got To Me will make her first appearance in the colours of Amo Racing, while Andrew Balding's Bellum Justum and the Charlie Appleby-trained Ancient Wisdom finished seventh and eighth respectively in the Derby last year and have banked some smart form since.
