Toms River man charged in horrific, airborne crash in Lakewood that killed passenger
LAKEWOOD - A 52-year-old woman is dead, and a 56-year-old Toms River man is charged in connection with her death, after the car they were in early Tuesday went flying through the air twice before landing upside down in a drainage ditch adjacent to Cedar Bridge Avenue, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.
Martine Taylor Jr., 56, the driver of the ill-fated 2015 Nissan Altima, was charged with causing a death while driving with a suspended driver's license, Billhimer said.
Police discovered the horrific crash when they responded to a report about 1:35 a.m. from a tractor-trailer driver who reported that the rig struck overhead utility wires while traveling east on Cedar Bridge Avenue, near the Garden State Parkway overpass, according to a news release issued by the prosecutor.
Officers located the utility disruption, and Jersey Central Power & Light Co. was contacted to respond and render the area safe.
While investigating the incident, officers discovered the heavily damaged Nissan Altima upside down in a drainage ditch adjacent to the eastbound lane of Cedar Bridge Avenue, the news release said.
Taylor and the woman were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated. The woman, who Billhimer did not identify, was unresponsive, and attempts to save her life were unsuccessful, the news release said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Taylor was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
The investigation revealed the horrific crash had impacted the utility lines that the tractor trailer driver reported striking.
The probe revealed the Altima had been traveling west on Cedar Bridge Avenue when it crossed the double yellow centerline and entered the eastbound lanes before leaving the road, going airborne, clearing the guardrail and traveling about 189 feet through the air, the news release said.
The vehicle quickly made contact with the ground before going airborne again, this time striking a tree before landing on its roof in the drainage ditch, the release said.
Investigators learned Taylor's driving privileges were suspended at the time of the crash, the news release said.
In furtherance of the investigation, blood was drawn from Taylor, in accordance with a court-authorized warrant.
Taylor was served with a warrant charging him with the criminal offense while at the hospital. He also was issued multiple motor-vehicle summonses.
Once he is released from the hospital, he will be taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he will remain to await a detention hearing, the news release said.
The prosecutor's Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Lakewood police and the Ocean County Sheriff's Crime Scene Investigation Unit conducted the investigation.

Remains of Merritt, B.C., man found 2 years after disappearance
RCMP in the B.C. Interior have confirmed that a Merritt man's body was found more than two years after his disappearance. Miguel Mack was last seen on Feb. 27, 2023. He was reported missing on March 3 when family had not seen or heard from him for several days. On Wednesday, RCMP said that they had learned that his remains had been found and identified in April. Police said that Mack's family had been told of the discovery, but they did not disclose where exactly his remains were found. "The investigation into Miguel Mack's death continues to remain a priority," said Staff Sgt. Jason Smart with the Southeast District Major Crime Unit. "There are people out there with direct and indirect knowledge of Miguel Mack's death and we are asking those individuals to come forward and contact the police." The major crime unit had been looking into Mack's disappearance in 2023, saying that it was suspicious and involved criminality. Mack's brother told CBC News in 2023 that family and friends had been searching for the Nuxalk man since he went missing. Volunteers had covered much of the Nicola Valley in the search, and it reached as far as Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, Victoria, Bella Coola and Prince George. Mack was described as an athlete with a love for soccer, basketball, and slo-pitch.

Tennessee man arrested for trafficking fentanyl after vehicle pursuit with Priceville police
Jun. 7—A Tennessee man was arrested Thursday night after fleeing officers in a traffic stop on Interstate 65, crashing his vehicle, and attempting to escape on foot before officers apprehended him and found fentanyl in his possession, according to the Priceville Police Department. Lebanon resident Richard Conrad Rothe, 34, is charged with drug trafficking, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, using false identity to avoid arrest and hinder prosecution, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence, tampering with physical evidence, reckless driving, and felony attempting to elude a police officer. Police said a Morgan County Circuit Judge has set Rothe's total bond at $420,300 with additional holds for authorities in Tennessee and Kentucky. At approximately 11:50 p.m., police said they initiated a traffic stop in the 3200 block of Point Mallard Parkway and made contact with a male driver, Rothe, and a female passenger. An affidavit said police stopped the blue Nissan Altima for seat belt and failure to signal violations. As soon as officers approached the vehicle, it began to elude them in the southbound lane on I-65 and continued toward Falkville, according to police. "The suspect's vehicle exited I-65 and entered the town of Falkville, nearly colliding with two patrol vehicles belonging to the Morgan County Sheriff's Office," police said. "The suspect then altered course and continued fleeing toward the Eva area." Rothe eventually crashed his vehicle and veered off the road as he rounded a curve on Adams Road in Eva and attempted to escape on foot until deputies apprehended him in a pond where he was trying to conceal himself, according to the affidavit. Police said they found fentanyl and drug paraphernalia on Routhe and he told paramedics at the scene he had also consumed illegal narcotics. After being checked out at Decatur Morgan Hospital, he was transported to Morgan County Jail. An affidavit said there was a total of 12.3 grams of fentanyl found on Routhe and that he initially declined to identify himself. Police said the female passenger was captured in Eva on Friday and charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. She was held in lieu of $500 bail at Morgan County Jail. — or 256-340-2442.
